    In this paper, the Bregman and Burbea-Rao divergences for matrices are investigated. Two mean-value theorems for the divergences induced by C^2-functions are derived. As application, certain Cauchy type means of the entries of the matrices are constructed. By utilizing three classes of parametrized convex functions, the exponential convexity of the divergences, thought as a function of the parameter, is proved. The monotonicity of the corresponding means of Cauchy type is shown. Power means are also considered

    Altered cannabinoid receptor expression in pancreatic islets in experimental model of uraemia

    Background: Uraemia leads to a number of metabolic and hormonal disorders including defective carbohydrate metabolism. Endocannabinoids exert their effect on insulin and glucagon secretion via activation of specific receptors named CB1 and CB2. For this reason and the absence of reports on location and immunoreactivity of CB1, CB2 receptors compared to immunoreactivity of insulin- and glucagon-secreting cells in experimental uraemia, the author decided to investigate this issue. The aim of the present study was the immunohistochemical localisation and evaluation of cannabinoid receptors (CB1, CB2), insulin and glucagon in the pancreatic islets of uraemic rats. Materials and methods: Fragments of the ratā€™s pancreas were collected 28 days after surgical resection of one kidney and removal of 70% of the other kidney cortex. Paraffin-embedded sections were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical reactions were performed with the use of a specific antibody against CB1-, CB2-receptors, insulin and glucagon. Results: It was revealed the decreased immunoreactivity of the CB1 receptor and higher intensity of the immunohistochemical reaction against CB2 receptor as compared to the value in the control animals. Significantly higher immunoreactivity of glucagon-positive cells and weaker immunoreactivity of insulin-positive cells were observed in pancreatic islets of uraemic rats. Conclusions: The obtained results indicate the involvement of cannabinoid receptors in the pathomechanism of carbohydrate metabolism disorders, associated with abnormal secretion of hormones by the Ī± and Ī² cells in uraemia

    A Mobile App for Wound Localization using Deep Learning

    We present an automated wound localizer from 2D wound and ulcer images by using deep neural network, as the first step towards building an automated and complete wound diagnostic system. The wound localizer has been developed by using YOLOv3 model, which is then turned into an iOS mobile application. The developed localizer can detect the wound and its surrounding tissues and isolate the localized wounded region from images, which would be very helpful for future processing such as wound segmentation and classification due to the removal of unnecessary regions from wound images. For Mobile App development with video processing, a lighter version of YOLOv3 named tiny-YOLOv3 has been used. The model is trained and tested on our own image dataset in collaboration with AZH Wound and Vascular Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The YOLOv3 model is compared with SSD model, showing that YOLOv3 gives a mAP value of 93.9%, which is much better than the SSD model (86.4%). The robustness and reliability of these models are also tested on a publicly available dataset named Medetec and shows a very good performance as well.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Metabolism of ticagrelor in patients with acute coronary syndromes.

    Ā© The Author(s) 2018Ticagrelor is a state-of-the-art antiplatelet agent used for the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Unlike remaining oral P2Y12 receptor inhibitors ticagrelor does not require metabolic activation to exert its antiplatelet action. Still, ticagrelor is extensively metabolized by hepatic CYP3A enzymes, and AR-C124910XX is its only active metabolite. A post hoc analysis of patient-level (nā€‰=ā€‰117) pharmacokinetic data pooled from two prospective studies was performed to identify clinical characteristics affecting the degree of AR-C124910XX formation during the first six hours after 180ā€‰mg ticagrelor loading dose in the setting of ACS. Both linear and multiple regression analyses indicated that ACS patients presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction or suffering from diabetes mellitus are more likely to have decreased rate of ticagrelor metabolism during the acute phase of ACS. Administration of morphine during ACS was found to negatively influence transformation of ticagrelor into AR-C124910XX when assessed with linear regression analysis, but not with multiple regression analysis. On the other hand, smoking appears to increase the degree of ticagrelor transformation in ACS patients. Mechanisms underlying our findings and their clinical significance warrant further research.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    FIRST-based survey of Compact Steep Spectrum sources I. MERLIN images of arc-second scale objects

    Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) sources are powerful extragalactic radio sources with angular dimensions of the order of a few arcseconds or less. Such a compactness is apparently linked to the youth of these objects. The majority of CSSs investigated so far have been known since the early 1980s. This paper is the first in a series where we report the results of an observational campaign targeted on a completely new sample of CSSs which are significantly weaker than those investigated before. The ultimate goal of that campaign is to find out how ``weak'' CSSs compare to ``strong'', classical ones, especially with regard to the morphologies.
