Wireless home automation networks for indoor surveillance: technologies and experiments
The use of wireless technologies for critical surveillance and home automation introduces a number of opportunities as well as technological challenges. New emerging technologies give the opportunity to exploit the full potential of the internet of things paradigm by augmenting existing wired installations with smart wireless architectures. This work gives an overview of requirements, characteristics, and challenges of wireless home automation networks with special focus on intrusion detection systems. The proposed wireless network is based on several sensors that are deployed over a monitored area for detecting possible risky situations and triggering appropriate actions in response. The network needs to support critical traffic patterns with different characteristics and quality constraints. Namely, it should provide a periodic low-power monitoring service and, in case of intrusion detection, a real-time alarm propagation mechanism over inherently unreliable wireless links subject to fluctuations of the signal power. Following the guidelines introduced by recent standardization, this paper proposes the design of a wireless network prototype at 868 MHz which is able to satisfy the specifications of typical intrusion detection applications. A proprietary medium access control is developed based on the low-power SimpliciTI radio stack (Texas Instruments Incorporated, San Diego, CA, USA). Network performance is assessed by experimental measurements using a test-bed in an indoor office environment with severe multipath and nonline-of-sight propagation conditions. Globalisation and automation as sources of labour-market competition, and support for European Union unemployment insurance
Societies and economies are experiencing deep and intertwined structural changes
that may unsettle the perceptions European citizens have of their economic and
employment security. Such labour-market perceptions are likely in turn to alter
people’s political positions. For instance, those worried by labour-market competition
may prefer greater social protection to compensate for the accrued risk, or might prefer
more closed economies where external borders provide protection (or the illusion of
protection). We test these expectations with a conjoint experiment in 13 European
countries on European-level social policy, studying how citizens’ demands align
with parties’ political supply. Results broadly corroborate our expectations on the
moderating effects of different types of concerns about perceived sources of labour-
market competition on the features of preferred European-level social policy
The role of detraining in tendon mechanobiology
INTRODUCTION:
Several conditions such as training, aging, estrogen deficiency and drugs could affect the biological and anatomo-physiological characteristics of the tendon. Additionally, recent preclinical and clinical studies examined the effect of detraining on tendon, showing alterations in its structure and morphology and in tenocyte mechanobiology. However, few data evaluated the importance that cessation of training might have on tendon. Basically, we do not fully understand how tendons react to a phase of training followed by sudden detraining. Therefore, within this review, we summarize the studies where tendon detraining was examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
A descriptive systematic literature review was carried out by searching three databases (PubMed, Scopus and Web of Knowledge) on tendon detraining. Original articles in English from 2000 to 2015 were included. In addition, the search was extended to the reference lists of the selected articles. A public reference manager (www.mendeley.com) was adopted to remove duplicate articles.
RESULTS:
An initial literature search yielded 134 references (www.pubmed.org: 53; www.scopus.com: 11; www.webofknowledge.com: 70). Fifteen publications were extracted based on the title for further analysis by two independent reviewers. Abstracts and complete articles were after that reviewed to evaluate if they met inclusion criteria.
CONCLUSIONS:
The revised literature comprised four clinical studies and an in vitro and three in vivo reports. Overall, the results showed that tendon structure and properties after detraining are compromised, with an alteration in the tissue structural organization and mechanical properties. Clinical studies usually showed a lesser extent of tendon alterations, probably because preclinical studies permit an in-depth evaluation of tendon modifications, which is hard to perform in human subjects. In conclusion, after a period of sudden detraining (e.g., after an injury), physical activity should be taken with caution, following a targeted rehabilitation program. Abstract The increasing phenomena related to urbanization and human impact on landscape leads to re-think the future of the cities. As well as in buildings, a careful design, the use of renewable sources and the use of advanced technical solutions, to achieve a significant energy savings, are strategies not sufficient to define a "Post-Carbon city" or a "Post-Carbon building". It is necessary that the citizen/occupant become a "Post-Carbon society", i.e. they pursue conscious lifestyle marked on energy saving principles. This suggest that the occupant's behaviour plays a fundamental role. In fact, many studies have shown that the human behaviour influences, mainly, the energy performance, explaining, in this way, the discrepancy gap between predicted and real consumptions. Since human behaviour is, in large part, influenced by several factors, a behavioural change towards sustainable lifestyle is desirable and this is possible, for examples, by providing to users feedback and information on comfort condition and energy use. The main goal of this research is to identify the pro-environmental behaviour by a questionnaire survey. QM/Classical Modeling of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Based on Atomistic Electromagnetic Models
We present quantum mechanics (QM)/frequency dependent fluctuating charge (QM/ωFQ) and fluctuating dipoles (QM/ωFQFμ) multiscale approaches to model surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra of molecular systems adsorbed on plasmonic nanostructures. The methods are based on a QM/classical partitioning of the system, where the plasmonic substrate is treated by means of the atomistic electromagnetic models ωFQ and ωFQFμ, which are able to describe in a unique fashion and at the same level of accuracy the plasmonic properties of noble metal nanostructures and graphene-based materials. Such methods are based on classical physics, i.e. Drude conduction theory, classical electrodynamics, and atomistic polarizability to account for interband transitions, by also including an ad-hoc phenomenological correction to describe quantum tunneling. QM/ωFQ and QM/ωFQFμ are thus applied to selected test cases, for which computed results are compared with available experiments, showing the robustness and reliability of both approaches
Identification of Passion Fruit Oil Adulteration by Chemometric Analysis of FTIR Spectra
Passion fruit oil is a high-value product with applications in the food and cosmetic sectors. It is frequently diluted with sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is also a potential adulterant as its addition does not notably alter the appearance of the passion fruit oil. In this paper, we show that this is also true for the FTIR spectrum. However, the chemometric analysis of the data changes this situation. Principal component analysis (PCA) enables not only the straightforward discrimination of pure passion fruit oil and adulterated samples but also the unambiguous classification of passion fruit oil products from five different manufacturers. Even small amounts—significantly below 1%—of the adulterant can be detected. Furthermore, partial least-squares regression (PLSR) facilitates the quantification of the amount of sunflower oil added to the passion fruit oil. The results demonstrate that the combination of FTIR spectroscopy and chemometric data analysis is a very powerful tool to analyze passion fruit oil
