The negative effects of failed service recoveries

    Get PDF
Research has shown that more than half of attempted recovery efforts fail, producing a "double deviation" effect. Surprisingly, these double deviation effects have received little attention in marketing literature. This paper examines what happens after these critical encounters, which behavior or set of behaviors the customers are prone to follow and how customers' perceptions of the firm's recovery efforts influence these behaviors. For the analysis of choice of the type of response (complaining, exit, complaining and exit, and no-switching), we estimate multinomial Logit models with random coefficients (RCL). The results of our study show that magnitude of service failure, explanations, apologies, perceived justice, angry and frustration felt by the customer, and satisfaction with service recovery have a significant effect on customers' choice of the type of response. Implications from the findings are offered. Study of radial heat transport in W7-X using the transfer entropy

Autor colectivo: W7-X TeamIn this work, we analyze data obtained using the electron cyclotron emission radiometer at the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator using a relatively new technique: the transfer entropy. Thus, we detect the propagation of information and find that it occurs in a stepwise fashion: we observe both 'trapping zones' and radial 'jumps', when the information is apparently skipping over intermediate positions. Using scans of the rotational transform, we observe that the 'trapping zones' appear to be associated with rational surfaces. Power scan experiments show that these 'jumps' increase in importance when power is increased, thus enhancing the effective diffusivity. The observations are interpreted in terms of a resistive magneto-hydrodynamic model, which displays behavior similar to the experimental results. The 'trapping zones' are explained in terms of zonal flows associated with rational surfaces, while the 'jumps' are ascribed to mode coupling effects, i.e. the transmission of turbulent energy via the magnetic field

Lung penetration, bronchopulmonary pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic profile and safety of 3 g of ceftolozane/tazobactam administered to ventilated, critically ill patients with pneumonia

Objectives: Ceftolozane/tazobactam is approved for hospital-acquired/ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia at double the dose (i.e. 2 g/1 g) recommended for other indications. We evaluated the bronchopulmonary pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic profile of this 3 g ceftolozane/tazobactam regimen in ventilated pneumonia patients. Methods: This was an open-label, multicentre, Phase 1 trial (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02387372). Mechanically ventilated patients with proven/suspected pneumonia received four to six doses of 3 g of ceftolozane/tazobactam (adjusted for renal function) q8h. Serial plasma samples were collected after the first and last doses. One bronchoalveolar lavage sample per patient was collected at 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 h after the last dose and epithelial lining fluid (ELF) drug concentrations were determined. Pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated by noncompartmental analysis and pharmacodynamic analyses were conducted to graphically evaluate achievement of target exposures (plasma and ELF ceftolozane concentrations >4 mg/L and tazobactam concentrations >1 mg/L; target in plasma: similar to 30% and similar to 20% of the dosing interval, respectively). Results: Twenty-six patients received four to six doses of study drug; 22 were included in the ELF analyses. Ceftolozane and tazobactam T-max (6 and 2 h, respectively) were delayed in ELF compared with plasma (1h). Lung penetration, expressed as the ratio of mean drug exposure (AUC) in ELF to plasma, was 50% (ceftolozane) and 62% (tazobactam). Mean ceftolozane and tazobactam ELF concentrations remained >4 mg/L and >1mg/L, respectively, for 100% of the dosing interval. Therewere no deaths or adverse event-related study discontinuations. Conclusions: In ventilated pneumonia patients, 3 g of ceftolozane/tazobactam q8h yielded ELF exposures considered adequate to cover ceftolozane/tazobactam-susceptible respiratory pathogens

Toward a Core Design to Distribute an Execution on a Many-Core Processor

International audienceThis paper presents a parallel execution model and a many-core processor design to run C programs in parallel. The model automatically builds parallel sections of machine instructions from the run trace. It parallelizes instructions fetches, renamings, executions and retirements. Predictor based fetch is replaced by a fetch-decode-and-partly-execute stage able to compute in-order most of the control instructions. Tomasulo's register renaming is extended to memory with a technique to match consumer/producer pairs. The Reorder Buffer is adapted to allow parallel retirement. The model is presented on a sum reduction example which is also used to give a short analytical evaluation of the model performance potential

The differentiated effects of CSR actions in the service industry

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to attempt to explain why the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives may be different and/or more important in service firms compared to manufacturing firms. CSR is becoming a common strategy, hence its extensive research. Central to it is the analysis of the effect of CSR on a firm’s performance, whose outcome depends on firm-specific and industry-related factors. Design/methodology/approach – The event study methodology is applied to all the 248 companies that have ever traded on the Spanish Stock Market between 1990 and 2007. A regression analysis examines potential different effects of CSR on service and goods firms. Findings – The results show that CSR activities have a positive impact on firm performance that is higher for service firms than for manufacturing firms. Actions related to the environment, responsible labor relationships and good corporate governance are especially important in the service context. Research limitations/implications – This research is focused on shareholders’ performance, but it does not consider other stakeholders, such as real consumer behavior or employees’ commitment and productivity. Practical implications – Service firms are likely to gain from focusing on some CSR activities (environment, employees and good corporate governance) and should use their responsible behavior as a valuable tool for public relations and differentiation in the market. Originality/value – This article is the first attempt to empirically test and explain why the relationship between CSR and firm performance may be different (more positive) for service vs manufacturing firms. The authors would like to thank the Spanish Ministry of Science for financially supporting this research under Contract No. ECO2008-05487

A conceptual model for sheet-flow drawn from rapid granular flow theories

33rd IAHR Congress: Water Engineering for a Sustainable EnvironmentThis paper is aimed at presenting i) a simple, yet sound, conceptual model applicable to the simulation of erosion, deposition and transport of cohesionless sediment in stratified flows under high shear stresses and ii) numerical solutions in idealized unsteady flow non-equilibrium transport situations. The conceptual model for the granular phase comprises 2DV mass and momentum and energy equations and constitutive equations, all derived within the dense limit of the Chapman-Enskog kinetic theory. 1D shallow-flow conservation and closure equations are derived for the fluid-granular mixture. Formulas for the average velocity in the transport layers, the vertical net flux of sediment mass and the thickness of the transport layer are thus obtained. Numerical solutions for dam-break flows over cohesionless mobile beds in prismatic and non-prismatic channels are obtained and discussed
