Learning and retrieval rate of words presented auditorily and visually

    Get PDF
Mode of presentation (visual or auditory) of a multitrial free recall test is stressed as an important factor in improving the diagnosis of certain neurological patients. For further use in neuropsychological research, an experiment was carried out using normal subjects, in which the effects of presentation mode and order of modality were investigated. There were no differential effects of these variables on several parameters, such as the number of words recalled and the learning curve. The time needed for the responses in immediate recall was the same in both auditory and visual conditions. In delayed recall, however, the interresponse times were significantly shorter when words had been presented auditorily than when presented visually. The results are discussed in light of further application in the field of neuropsychology

ObjectivesAnti-inflammatory effects of tranexamic acid and aprotinin, used to abate perioperative blood loss, are reported and might be of substantial clinical relevance. The study of messenger ribonucleic acid synthesis provides a valuable asset in evaluating the inflammatory pathways involved.MethodsWhole-blood messenger ribonucleic acid expression of 114 inflammatory genes was compared pre- and postoperatively in 35 patients randomized to receive either placebo, tranexamic acid, or aprotinin. These results were further confirmed by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction.ResultsOf the 23 genes exhibiting independently altered postoperative gene expression levels, 8 were restricted to the aprotinin group only (growth differentiation factor 3, interleukin 19, interleukin 1 family member 7, transforming growth factor α, tumor necrosis factor superfamily 10, tumor necrosis factor superfamily 12, tumor necrosis factor superfamily 13B, vascular endothelial growth factor α), whereas both aprotinin and tranexamic acid altered gene expression of 3 genes as compared with placebo (FMS-related tyrosine kinase 3 ligand, growth differentiation factor 5, interferon-α8). In general, less upregulation of pro-inflammatory, and more upregulation of anti-inflammatory, genes was observed for patients treated with antifibrinolytics. Gene expression affected by aprotinin coded mostly for proteins that function through serine proteases.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that the use of tranexamic acid and aprotinin results in altered inflammatory pathways on the genomic expression level. We further demonstrate that the use of aprotinin leads to significant attenuation of the immune response, with several inhibitory effects restricted to the use of aprotinin only. The results aid in a better understanding of the targets of these drugs, and add to the discussion on which antifibrinolytic can best be used in the cardiac surgical patient

Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Show IgG Immune Responses Towards Specific Intestinal Bacterial Genera

Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by a disturbed gut microbiota composition. Patients with IBD have both elevated mucosal and serum levels of IgG-antibodies directed against bacterial antigens, including flagellins. In this study, we aimed to determine to which intestinal bacteria the humoral immune response is directed to in patients with IBD. Methods: Fecal and serum samples were collected from patients with IBD (n=55) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n=55). Fecal samples were incubated with autologous serum and IgG-coated fractions were isolated by magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) and its efficiency was assessed by flow cytometry. The bacterial composition of both untreated and IgG-coated fecal samples was determined by 16S rRNA-gene Illumina sequencing. Results: IgG-coated fecal samples were characterized by significantly lower microbial diversity compared to the fecal microbiome. Both in patients with IBD and controls, serum IgG responses were primarily directed to Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Enterococcus, Veillonella and Enterobacteriaceae, as well as against specific Lachnospiraceae bacteria, including Coprococcus and Dorea (all P<0.001), and to Ruminococcus gnavus-like bacteria (P<0.05). In contrast, serological IgG responses against typical commensal, anaerobic and colonic microbial species were rather low, e.g. to the Lachnospiraceae members Roseburia and Blautia, to Faecalibacterium, as well as to Bacteroides. Patients with IBD showed more IgG-coating of Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, and Lactococcus bacteria compared to healthy controls (all P<0.05). No differences in IgG-coated bacterial fractions were observed between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, between active or non-active disease, nor between different disease locations. Conclusion: The IgG immune response is specifically targeted at distinct intestinal bacterial genera that are typically associated with the small intestinal microbiota, whereas responses against more colonic-type commensals are lower, which was particularly the case for patients with IBD. These findings may be indicative of a strong immunological exposure to potentially pathogenic intestinal bacteria in concordance with relative immune tolerance against commensal bacteria

The COSMOS AGN Spectroscopic Survey I: XMM Counterparts

We present optical spectroscopy for an X-ray and optical flux-limited sample of 677 XMM-Newton selected targets covering the 2 deg^2 COSMOS field, with a yield of 485 high-confidence redshifts. The majority of the spectra were obtained over three seasons (2005-2007) with the IMACS instrument on the Magellan (Baade) telescope. We also include in the sample previously published Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra and supplemental observations with MMT/Hectospec. We detail the observations and classification analyses. The survey is 90% complete to flux limits of f_{0.5-10 keV}>8 x 10^-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and i_AB+<22, where over 90% of targets have high-confidence redshifts. Making simple corrections for incompleteness due to redshift and spectral type allows for a description of the complete population to $i_AB+<23. The corrected sample includes 57% broad emission line (Type 1, unobscured) AGN at 0.13<z<4.26, 25% narrow emission line (Type 2, obscured) AGN at 0.07<z<1.29, and 18% absorption line (host-dominated, obscured) AGN at 0<z<1.22 (excluding the stars that made up 4% of the X-ray targets). We show that the survey's limits in X-ray and optical flux include nearly all X-ray AGN (defined by L_{0.5-10 keV}>3 x 10^42 erg s^-1) to z<1, of both optically obscured and unobscured types. We find statistically significant evidence that the obscured to unobscured AGN ratio at z<1 increases with redshift and decreases with luminosity.Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ. 31 pages, 17 figures. Foil-to-foil interconnection of capacitive humidity sensors using electrically conductive adhesives

    Get PDF
The present study presents the development and comparison of two foil-to-foil lamination and interconnection methods of foil-based capacitive humidity sensors. The first method uses confined anisotropic conductive adhesive (ICA) in laser ablated vias through foil (TFV). The second method uses anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA). Both integration methods were characterized during accelerated humidity (85°C / 85 R.H.),shock temperature (-40°C / 125°C) and bending forces. While the ACA method requires less processing steps and the TFV method was shown to be more robust to bending forces, the interconnection of both methods withstood more than 900 hours of environmental ageing. Finally, the correct functionality of two types of foil-based capacitive humidity sensors was successfully demonstrated by exposing them to different R.H. levels and comparing their readings to a commercial sensor

Functional Studies on the IBD Susceptibility Gene IL23R Implicate Reduced Receptor Function in the Protective Genetic Variant R381Q

    Get PDF
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in several populations have demonstrated significant association of the IL23R gene with IBD (Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC)) and psoriasis, suggesting that perturbation of the IL-23 signaling pathway is relevant to the pathophysiology of these diseases. One particular variant, R381Q (rs11209026), confers strong protection against development of CD. We investigated the effects of this variant in primary T cells from healthy donors carrying IL23RR381 and IL23RQ381 haplotypes. Using a proprietary anti-IL23R antibody, ELISA, flow cytometry, phosphoflow and real-time RT-PCR methods, we examined IL23R expression and STAT3 phosphorylation and activation in response to IL-23. IL23RQ381 was associated with reduced STAT3 phosphorylation upon stimulation with IL-23 and decreased number of IL-23 responsive T-cells. We also observed slightly reduced levels of proinflammatory cytokine secretion in IL23RQ381 positive donors. Our study shows conclusively that IL23RQ381 is a loss-of-function allele, further strengthening the implication from GWAS results that the IL-23 pathway is pathogenic in human disease. This data provides an explanation for the protective role of R381Q in CD and may lead to the development of improved therapeutics for autoimmune disorders like CD
