Plant microfossil record of the terminal Cretaceous event in the western United States and Canada
Plant microfossils, principally pollen grains and spores produced by land plants, provide an excellent record of the terminal Cretaceous event in nonmarine environments. The record indicates regional devastation of the latest Cretaceous vegetation with the extinction of many groups, followed by a recolonization of the earliest Tertiary land surface, and development of a permanently changed land flora. The regional variations in depositional environments, plant communities, and paleoclimates provide insight into the nature and effects of the event, which were short-lived but profound. The plant microfossil data support the hypothesis that an abruptly initiated, major ecological crisis occurred at the end of the Cretaceous. Disruption of the Late Cretaceous flora ultimately contributred to the rise of modern vegetation. The plant microfossils together with geochemical and mineralogical data are consistent with an extraterrestrial impact having been the cause of the terminal Cretaceous event
Torque and temperature dependence of the hysteretic voltage-induced torsional strain in tantalum trisulfide
We have measured the dependence of the hysteretic voltage-induced torsional
strain (VITS) in crystals of orthorhombic tantalum trisulfide on temperature
and applied torque. In particular, applying square-wave voltages above the
charge-density-wave (CDW) threshold voltage, so as to abruptly switch the
strain across its hysteresis loop, we have found that the time constant for the
VITS to switch (at different temperatures and voltages) varied as the CDW
current. Application of torque to the crystal could also change the VITS time
constant, magnitude, and sign, suggesting that the VITS is a consequence of
residual torsional strain in the sample which twist the CDW. Application of
voltage changes the pitch of these CDW twists, which then act back on the
lattice. However, it remains difficult to understand the sluggishness of the
response.Comment: 20 pages, including 7 figures, to be published in PR
Method and apparatus for fabricating improved solar cell modules
A method and apparatus for fabricating an improved solar cell module is described. The apparatus includes a supply drum for feeding a flexible strip having etched electrical circuitry deposited on it a supply drum for feeding into overlying engagement with the flexible strip a flexible tape having a pair of exposed tacky surfaces, and a plurality of rams for receiving and depositing a plurality of solar cells in side-by-side relation on an exposed tacky surface of the tape in electrical contacting engagement with the etched circuitry
Study of liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen auxiliary propulsion systems for the space tug
Design concepts are considered that permit use of a liquid-liquid (as opposed to gas-gas) oxygen/hydrogen thrust chamber for attitude control and auxiliary propulsion thrusters on the space tug. The best of the auxiliary propulsion system concepts are defined and their principal characteristics, including cost as well as operational capabilities, are established. Design requirements for each of the major components of the systems, including thrusters, are developed at the conceptual level. The competitive concepts considered use both dedicated (separate tanks) and integrated (propellant from main propulsion tanks) propellant supply. The integrated concept is selected as best for the space tug after comparative evaluation against both cryogenic and storable propellant dedicated systems. A preliminary design of the selected system is established and recommendations for supporting research and technology to further the concept are presented
Boundary changing operators in the O(n) matrix model
We continue the study of boundary operators in the dense O(n) model on the
random lattice. The conformal dimension of boundary operators inserted between
two JS boundaries of different weight is derived from the matrix model
description. Our results are in agreement with the regular lattice findings. A
connection is made between the loop equations in the continuum limit and the
shift relations of boundary Liouville 3-points functions obtained from Boundary
Ground Ring approach.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures, Introduction and Conclusion improve
Closed Universes With Black Holes But No Event Horizons As a Solution to the Black Hole Information Problem
We show it is possible for the information paradox in black hole evaporation
to be resolved classically. Using standard junction conditions, we attach the
general closed spherically symmetric dust metric to a spacetime satisfying all
standard energy conditions but with a single point future c-boundary. The
resulting Omega Point spacetime, which has NO event horizons, nevertheless has
black hole type trapped surfaces and hence black holes. But since there are no
event horizons, information eventually escapes from the black holes. We show
that a scalar quintessence field with an appropriate exponential potential near
the final singularity would give rise to an Omega Point final singularity.Comment: 27 pages in LaTex2e, no figure
William Nichols interview for Wright State University History Course 485
On April 22, 2001 Rebecca Moor interviewed William Nichols, a World War II paramedic, for a class project dealing with oral histories and capturing the history of the Miami Valley. During the interview William discusses his life, joining the navy, and his experiences in World War II. The majority of the interview focuses on his experience serving during World War II
