Reducing Reparameterization Gradient Variance
Optimization with noisy gradients has become ubiquitous in statistics and
machine learning. Reparameterization gradients, or gradient estimates computed
via the "reparameterization trick," represent a class of noisy gradients often
used in Monte Carlo variational inference (MCVI). However, when these gradient
estimators are too noisy, the optimization procedure can be slow or fail to
converge. One way to reduce noise is to use more samples for the gradient
estimate, but this can be computationally expensive. Instead, we view the noisy
gradient as a random variable, and form an inexpensive approximation of the
generating procedure for the gradient sample. This approximation has high
correlation with the noisy gradient by construction, making it a useful control
variate for variance reduction. We demonstrate our approach on non-conjugate
multi-level hierarchical models and a Bayesian neural net where we observed
gradient variance reductions of multiple orders of magnitude (20-2,000x)
Laptop Technology in Classrooms: How Student Perceptions Shape Learning and Satisfaction
This study is based on perceptions of students regarding the integration of laptops in classroom endeavors. Empirical findings are based on data collected from a sample of 392 students in undergraduate and graduate universities in twelve states of the USA. Three key findings related to the integration of laptop technology into classrooms of higher education are reported. First relates to student perceptions and feelings surrounding laptop use in the classroom. Secondly, we report how these perceptions vary depending on personal characteristics of students. Lastly, we examine the role these perceptions play in student learning, as well as student satisfaction. Traditionally, laptop technology has been viewed as tool for facilitating note taking. However, our findings indicate that the learning experience is equal, and in some instances greater, when laptops are used to develop a more interactive learning environment, increase information gathering during class time, and enhance classroom discussion
Potassium Fertilizer Effects on Yield of Corn and Soybean and on Potassium Uptake and Recycling to the Soil
Research has been conducted in Iowa to investigate potassium (K) fertilization of corn and soybean, but not at this farm. Insufficient K amounts in the soil or applied with fertilizer or manure significantly decreases crop yield end economic benefits to growers. Also, research in other locations has shown large soil-test K temporal variability within a season or from the fall to spring. Therefore, a study was initiated in 2009 to investigate these issue
The MASSIVE Survey - I. A Volume-Limited Integral-Field Spectroscopic Study of the Most Massive Early-Type Galaxies within 108 Mpc
Massive early-type galaxies represent the modern-day remnants of the earliest
major star formation episodes in the history of the universe. These galaxies
are central to our understanding of the evolution of cosmic structure, stellar
populations, and supermassive black holes, but the details of their complex
formation histories remain uncertain. To address this situation, we have
initiated the MASSIVE Survey, a volume-limited, multi-wavelength,
integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) and photometric survey of the structure and
dynamics of the ~100 most massive early-type galaxies within a distance of 108
Mpc. This survey probes a stellar mass range M* > 10^{11.5} Msun and diverse
galaxy environments that have not been systematically studied to date. Our
wide-field IFS data cover about two effective radii of individual galaxies, and
for a subset of them, we are acquiring additional IFS observations on
sub-arcsecond scales with adaptive optics. We are also acquiring deep K-band
imaging to trace the extended halos of the galaxies and measure accurate total
magnitudes. Dynamical orbit modeling of the combined data will allow us to
simultaneously determine the stellar, black hole, and dark matter halo masses.
The primary goals of the project are to constrain the black hole scaling
relations at high masses, investigate systematically the stellar initial mass
function and dark matter distribution in massive galaxies, and probe the
late-time assembly of ellipticals through stellar population and kinematical
gradients. In this paper, we describe the MASSIVE sample selection, discuss the
distinct demographics and structural and environmental properties of the
selected galaxies, and provide an overview of our basic observational program,

The MASSIVE Survey II: Stellar Population Trends Out to Large Radius in Massive Early Type Galaxies
We examine stellar population gradients in ~100 massive early type galaxies
spanning 180 < sigma* < 370 km/s and M_K of -22.5 to -26.5 mag, observed as
part of the MASSIVE survey (Ma et al. 2014). Using integral-field spectroscopy
from the Mitchell Spectrograph on the 2.7m telescope at McDonald Observatory,
we create stacked spectra as a function of radius for galaxies binned by their
stellar velocity dispersion, stellar mass, and group richness. With excellent
sampling at the highest stellar mass, we examine radial trends in stellar
population properties extending to beyond twice the effective radius (~2.5
R_e). Specifically, we examine trends in age, metallicity, and abundance ratios
of Mg, C, N, and Ca, and discuss the implications for star formation histories
and elemental yields. At a fixed physical radius of 3-6 kpc (the likely size of
the galaxy cores formed at high redshift) stellar age and [alpha/Fe] increase
with increasing sigma* and depend only weakly on stellar mass, as we might
expect if denser galaxies form their central cores earlier and faster. If we
instead focus on 1-1.5 R_e, the trends in abundance and abundance ratio are
washed out, as might be expected if the stars at large radius were accreted by
smaller galaxies. Finally, we show that when controlling for \sigmastar, there
are only very subtle differences in stellar population properties or gradients
as a function of group richness; even at large radius internal properties

Prior research on micronutrients fertilization for corn and soybean has been scarce in Iowa and has shown inconsistent yield responses. Therefore, the objective of a study conducted during 2012 and 2013 was to assess effects of boron (B), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and their mixture on corn and soybean grain yield. Iowa State University has no interpretations of soil or tissue tests for micronutrients, other than for Zn in corn and sorghum
Long-term outcomes following a single corticosteroid injection for trigger finger
BACKGROUND: The outcomes of corticosteroid injection for trigger finger are well documented only with short-term follow-up. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the long-term effectiveness of a single injection and to examine predictors of success up to ten years after injection. METHODS: This case series analyzed 366 first-time corticosteroid injections in flexor tendon sheaths from January 2000 to December 2007 with a minimum follow-up duration of five years. Two hundred and forty patients (66%) were female, 161 patients (44%) had multiple trigger fingers, and eighty-eight patients (24%) had diabetes at the time of injection. The primary outcome of treatment failure was defined as subsequent injection or surgical trigger finger release of the affected digit. Medical records were reviewed, and any patients without documented failure or a return office visit in 2012 to 2013 were contacted by telephone regarding symptom recurrence and the need for additional treatment. Kaplan-Meier analyses with log-rank test and Cox regression analysis assessed the effect of baseline patient and disease characteristics on injection success. RESULTS: Forty-five percent of patients demonstrated long-term treatment success after a single injection. In the final regression model, the interaction of sex and the number of trigger fingers was the single predictor of treatment success. Exploring this association revealed a ten-year success rate of 56% for female patients presenting for the first time with a trigger finger compared with 35% in male patients presenting for the first time with a trigger finger, 39% in female patients with multiple trigger fingers, and 37% in male patients with multiple trigger fingers. Eighty-four percent of treatment failures occurred within the first two years following injection. Patient age, symptom type, and undifferentiated diabetes status were not predictive of treatment success. CONCLUSIONS: Female patients presenting with their first trigger finger have the highest rate of long-term treatment success after a single corticosteroid injection. Patients who continue to experience symptom relief two years after injection are likely to maintain long-term success. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic Level IV. Consequences of Dam Removal on Mussel Assemblages (Unionidae) in the Cuyahoga River
The primary objective of a new survey of the Cuyahoga River was to assess species richness and population abundance of various mussel species in the family Unionidae throughout the Middle Cuyahoga River and upper parts of the Lower Cuyahoga River. Historically, few records existed for this river between Lake Rockwell and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a region in which four dams have been removed in the past 12 years. Timed visual surveys were conducted during low flow conditions and by using tactile techniques in deeper water. Throughout the survey, only 37 live animals were located across the 18 Middle Cuyahoga River sites inspected, which included only Lampsilis siliquoidea, Pyganodon grandis and the state-endangered Ligumia nasuta. No live mussels were found between the Gorge and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. That 434 shells and valves were collected, and all but two were classifed as long dead, attests that mussels had been more abundant, and that at least nine of the ten species known to be present above Lake Rockwell had lived in the Middle Cuyahoga River. Remote sensing data and aerial photographs were used to characterize change in opening up the river, but benefts to water quality and stream flow subsequent to dam removal must be tempered with the apparent loss of an assemblage of mussels better adapted to lentic conditions
