On the 11th September 1973 a coup d'État orchestrated by the Chilean Armed Forces brought an end to the three year period of Salvador Allende's socialist government. The leader of this putsch, Augusto Pinochet, established in its place a violent military dictatorship, which was to last for seventeen years. A traumatic event marking the beginning either of a repressive period in Chilean history, or of national salvation from the fiery depths of socialist hell, preventing society's demise? The memory of the Chilean society remains divided in the wake of its recent past. The study seeks to define the inter-generational transmission of the memory of this repressive past. From Santiago to Montreal, this research endeavours to ascertain the post-memory generation's perception of its recent past, that is to say of those born slightly prior to or during the dictatorship. The depictions, the impressions and the learning channels will be compared with regard to the geographical location in order to illustrate the common and conflicting discourses. As the oral sources are the foundation of this master's thesis, we will convey the differing accounts of this past as reported by twenty-eight testimonies

Examination of the Effects on Orexin A on Rodentive Appetitive and Consumatory Behaviors Using a Progressive Ratio Schedule of Reinforcement

    Get PDF
Orexin has important functions in feeding, arousal, and motivation. However, the mechanism by which Orexin influences these processes is not well understood. The goals of the present study were: 1) demonstrate that orexin A enhances appetitive and consumptive behaviors (lever presses, licks, rewarded licks and breakpoint) using a progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement for sucrose reward and 2) Determine if gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor blockade could attenuate those behaviors. However, preliminary analysis did not reveal an effect of orexin A (30nM) when infused into the lateral ventricle of rats. Of the measures operant behaviors, the orexin A and saline groups did not differ. Therefore, the second phase was not conducted. Multiple explanations for the lack of orexin\u27s effect are possible: aged rats, endogenous orexin levels, incorrect dose, misplaced cannula and use of a different schedule of reinforcement than that previously used with orexin. The unique function of orexin in these behaviors prompts further analysis into the reason behind the outcomes of this study

The Laigiang river basin in the South Central Coast of Vietnam plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Binhdinh Province. In recent decades, the region has experienced commonly flooding in vast areas. This research aims to simulate event-based rainfall-runoff modelling, a historical flood event in December 2016, by applying the HEC-HMS model and rainfall data from CHIRPS. The CHIRPS data is an acceptable potential data input of the hydrology model. These have been confirmed through reliable validation indexes: The peak flood flow rate of 2,542.6 m3/s corresponds to the flood frequency of 5%; NSE with the value at 0.95; R2 coefficient reached 0.87; PBIAS being around 0.45, and PFC being at 0.89. It shows better performance in the rainy season than in the dry season. Inclusive, the CHIRPS rainfall data set and the HEC model could be used for some operational purposes in weather forecasting, especially for flood warnings in river basins in the South Central Coast, Vietnam

    Get PDF
In this study, Ordered Mesoporous Carbon (OMC) was prepared using resol as a carbon precursor and F127 as a soft template. Small-angle X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images, and nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms revealed that OMC possessed ordered hexagonal mesostructures (p6m) with an ordered pore size of 3.2nm, a high specific surface area (SBET) of 539m2/g, and a large total pore volume (Vtotal) of 0.44cm3/g. Subsequently, silver nanoparticles synthesized from an aqueous AgNO3 solution using glucose as a reducing agent and starch as a stabilizing agent were decorated on OMC, producing Ag/OMC. XRD analysis revealed that the composite contained silver crystals. In addition, the content and size of silver nanoparticles in Ag/OMC were 0.71wt% (AAS) and around 25-50nm (TEM), respectively. Due to the surface cover of silver nanoparticles, SBET and Vtotal of Ag/OMC slightly decreased to 417m2/g and 0.38cm3/g, respectively. Both agar and broth dilution techniques were used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the material against Staphylococcus aureus. Ag/OMC with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 25.0μg/mL is a potential candidate for use against Staphylococcus aureus

A translation and preliminary validation of the Dutch Wound-QoL questionnaire

    Get PDF
Background: Chronic wounds have a major impact on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Therefore, measuring HRQoL is an indispensable part of the treatment of patients with chronic wounds. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Wound-QoL, a wound-specific HRQoL questionnaire, in a Dutch population. Methods: The Wound-QoL was translated into Dutch according to the international standards. Patients with chronic wounds were asked to complete questionnaires at baseline (T0) and after six weeks (T1), including Wound-QoL, EQ-5D-3L (a generic questionnaire to measure HRQoL) and a visual analogue scale (VAS) measuring wound pain. If patients were not able to complete the questionnaire by themselves, it was read out to them by a nurse. Further data were obtained from medical records. Results: Of the 120 patients included, 64 (53.3%) completed the questionnaire by themselves. To 55 patients (45.8%), the questionnaire was read out. The internal consistency of the Wound-QoL global score was high at both time points (T0: Cronbach's α = 0.89, T1: Cronbach's α = 0.92). The item selectivity for global score ranged from r = 0.25 to r = 0.77 at T0 and from r = 0.40 to r = 0.79 at T1. Overall, the self-completion and read-out subgroups showed similar internal consistency and item selectivity scores. With regard to convergent validity, significant correlations were found between Wound-QoL and EQ-5D-3L (T0: r = - 0.45, p < 0.001, T1: r = - 0.50, p < 0.001) as well as between Wound-QoL and pain VAS (T0: r = 0.23, p = 0.012, T1: r = 0.37, p = 0.001) at both time points. Responsiveness analyses showed significant correlations between changes in Wound-QoL and changes in EQ-5D-3L (r = - 0.37, p < 0.001), pain VAS (r = 0.24, p = 0.044) and wound size (r = 0.24, p = 0.013). The self-completion and read-out subgroups showed differences in convergent validity and responsiveness. Conclusions: The results indicate that the Dutch version of the Wound-QoL has positive psychometric properties. However, more research is needed to further explore the differences between self-completed and read-out questionnaires

Ginger, a commonly used spice and medicinal herb, is an abundant source of bioactive compounds. However, the utilization of ginger in the pharmaceutical industry is still moderate and not commensurate with the potential of the Vietnamese horticulture industry, mainly due to a lack of information about the quality of input materials. In this study, we compared the volatile compounds of gingers collected from 13 provinces of Vietnam using GC/MS and GC-FID analysis to provide a basis for selecting and standardizing input materials. Furthermore, ginger essential oil from Ben Tre province of Vietnam exhibited significant antibacterial activity particularly in inhibiting Gram-positive bacteria, including S. aureus and S. epidermidis, with inhibition zones of 30.00 ± 1.41 and 24.67 ± 3.30 mm, respectively. However, no significant inhibition was observed against Gram-negative bacteria P. aeruginosa and E. coli. We also isolated 5 non-volatile compounds from ginger extract, namely 6-shogaol (1), quercetin (2), rutin (3), beta-sitosterol (4) and beta-sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5). Among them, compounds 1–3 displayed cytotoxicity against Hep3B, SK-LU-1, MCF-7, SK-LU-1, SW480 and HepG2 tumour cell lines, with an IC50 values ranging between 62.7 ± 2.1 and 97.6 ± 1.1 µM, using Ellipticine as a positive control. Compounds 4 and 5 showed cytotoxicity against Hep3B and HepG2 tumor cells, with the IC50 values ranging between 21.5 ± 5.1 and 46.9 ± 3.7 µM but did not exhibit any significant cytotoxicity against SW480 and SK-LU-1 cells. Compound 4 also demonstrated middling cytotoxicity against the MCF7 cell line, with an IC50 value of 43.6 ± 5.1 µM. These findings suggest further applications of Vietnamese ginger for the treatment of infectious and cancer-related diseases
