    Effective Methods of Constituency Service in Oregon State

    One would think that casework is the most effective method to reach constituents, however, that was not the case with this research about the Oregon State Legislature. Out of the 90 State Senators and House Representatives, there was a total of 50 surveys conducted and four interviews. The purpose of this research was to determine between casework, outreach and providing information, which method is deemed most effective within the Oregon Legislature when it comes to constituency service. Calculations show that third method, providing information, was the most effective with a solid 63%. These results shows that our legislator still lack in efforts with the other two main methods. There are certainly room for improvement when it comes to bettering the communication between constituents and legislators, even at the local level

    Simple Combined Model for Nonlinear Excitations in DNA

    We propose a new simple model for DNA denaturation bases on the pendulum model of Englander\cite{A1} and the microscopic model of Peyrard {\it et al.},\cite{A3} so called "combined model". The main parameters of our model are: the coupling constant kk along each strand, the mean stretching y∗y^\ast of the hydrogen bonds, the ratio of the damping constant and driven force γ/F\gamma/F. We show that both the length LL of unpaired bases and the velocity vv of kinks depend on not only the coupling constant kk but also the temperature TT.     Effect of Dipolar Interaction in Molecular Crystals

    We investigate in this paper the ground state and the nature of the transition from an orientational ordered phase at low temperature to the disordered state at high temperature in a molecular crystal. Our model is a Potts model which takes into account the exchange interaction JJ between nearest-neighbor molecules and a dipolar interaction between molecular axes in three dimensions. The dipolar interaction is characterized by two parameters: its amplitude DD and the cutoff distance rcr_c. If the molecular axis at a lattice site has three orientations, say the xx, yy or zz axes, then when D=0, the system is equivalent to the 3-state Potts model: the transition to the disordered phase is known to be of first order. When D≠0D\neq 0, the ground-state configuration is shown to be composed of two independent interpenetrating layered subsystems which form a sandwich whose periodicity depends on DD and rcr_c. We show by extensive Monte Carlo simulation with a histogram method that the phase transition remains of first order at relatively large values of rcr_c.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
