Placing three-dimensional isoparametric elements into NASTRAN
Linear (8 node), parabolic (20 node), cubic (32 node) and mixed (some edges linear, some parabolic and some cubic) have been inserted into NASTRAN, level 15.1. First the dummy element feature was used to check out the stiffness matrix generation routines for the linear element in NASTRAN. Then, the necessary modules of NASTRAN were modified to include the new family of elements. The matrix assembly was changed so that the stiffness matrix of each isoparametric element is only generated once as the time to generate these higher order elements tends to be much longer than the other elements in NASTRAN. This paper presents some of the experiences and difficulties of inserting a new element or family of elements into NASTRAN
A model for evolution and extinction
We present a model for evolution and extinction in large ecosystems. The
model incorporates the effects of interactions between species and the
influences of abiotic environmental factors. We study the properties of the
model by approximate analytic solution and also by numerical simulation, and
use it to make predictions about the distribution of extinctions and species
lifetimes that we would expect to see in real ecosystems. It should be possible
to test these predictions against the fossil record. The model indicates that a
possible mechanism for mass extinction is the coincidence of a large
coevolutionary avalanche in the ecosystem with a severe environmental

Engine bleed air reduction in DC-10
An 0.8 percent fuel savings was achieved by a reduction in engine bleed air through the use of cabin air recirculation. The recirculation system was evaluated in revenue service on a DC-10. The cabin remained comfortable with reductions in cabin fresh air (engine bleed air) as much as 50 percent. Flight test verified the predicted fuel saving of 0.8 percent

Evolution of Spatially Inhomogeneous Eco-Systems: An Unified Model Based Approach
Recently we have extended our the "unified" model of evolutionary ecology to
incorporate the {\it spatial inhomogeneities} of the eco-system and the {\it
migration} of individual organisms from one patch to another within the same
eco-system. In this paper an extension of our recent model is investigated so
as to describe the {\it migration} and {\it speciation} in a more realistic

The Effect of Pure State Structure on Nonequilibrium Dynamics
Motivated by short-range Ising spin glasses, we review some rigorous results
and their consequences for the relation between the number/nature of
equilibrium pure states and nonequilibrium dynamics. Two of the consequences
for spin glass dynamics following a deep quench to a temperature with broken
spin flip symmetry are: (1) Almost all initial configurations lie on the
boundary between the basins of attraction of multiple pure states. (2) Unless
there are uncountably many pure states with almost all pairs having zero
overlap, there can be no equilibration to a pure state as time goes to
infinity. We discuss the relevance of these results to the difficulty of
equilibration of spin glasses. We also review some results concerning the
``nature vs. nurture'' problem of whether the large-time behavior of both
ferromagnets and spin glasses following a deep quench is determined more by the
initial configuration or by the dynamics realization.Comment: 20 page
Trades in complex Hadamard matrices
A trade in a complex Hadamard matrix is a set of entries which can be changed
to obtain a different complex Hadamard matrix. We show that in a real Hadamard
matrix of order all trades contain at least entries. We call a trade
rectangular if it consists of a submatrix that can be multiplied by some scalar
to obtain another complex Hadamard matrix. We give a
characterisation of rectangular trades in complex Hadamard matrices of order
and show that they all contain at least entries. We conjecture that all
