BCS 100 Module 5: Contemporary Economic Activity
Economic forces play a significant role in today’s northern economies and have shaped northern lives from a time when subsistence activities predominated. Today, globalization is
bringing much focus to the vast renewable and non-renewable resources in the North including wildlife, fisheries and oceans, and mineral, oil and gas development. This module examines how economic activity is changing as a result of climate change, and how the contemporary economy is juxtaposed with the traditional subsistence economy. In both cases, social wellbeing is dependent upon renewable and non-renewable resources, and is governed by policy that
defines how these resources are used

Electricity Market Reforms in Alberta: A Preliminary Assessment
I presented my paper on January 4th. It was well received and in fact won a best paper award. I have been invited to submit the paper to one of the journals published by this association and I will be doing that.Alberta, Canada attempted to introduce competition into wholesale electricity markets in the late 1990s. In 2000/01 wholesale prices skyrocketed. Price rose as high as prices did in California, at the same time, and stayed high for as long a period of time. However whereas spiking wholesale prices led to the complete collapse of market reform in California and re-regulation, the reform model developed in Alberta proved to be more robust. Competitive wholesale markets in electricity have successfully evolved, to be benefit of consumers. This study examines the specifics of the reform model introduced in Alberta and provides a preliminary assessment of Alberta's efforts to introduce competition into the electricity sector.AVPR Special Research Opportunities & Academic & Professional Development Fund (A&PDF

Nano-engineering by optically directed self-assembly.
Lack of robust manufacturing capabilities have limited our ability to make tailored materials with useful optical and thermal properties. For example, traditional methods such as spontaneous self-assembly of spheres cannot generate the complex structures required to produce a full bandgap photonic crystals. The goal of this work was to develop and demonstrate novel methods of directed self-assembly of nanomaterials using optical and electric fields. To achieve this aim, our work employed laser tweezers, a technology that enables non-invasive optical manipulation of particles, from glass microspheres to gold nanoparticles. Laser tweezers were used to create ordered materials with either complex crystal structures or using aspherical building blocks
