Ziya Gökalp's Idea of Cultural Hybridity
This paper is a reflection on the distinctiveness and scope of the ideas of Ziya Gökalp (1876-1924), who played a key role in the formation of the ideology of the Turkish Republic created in 1923. Gökalp is generally cast by interpreters as a “Westernist” or “modernist” nationalist thinker, like many other thinkers in late developing societies, whose chief concern was the establishment of a modern Turkish nation-state and who, therefore, tried to combine Western knowledge with the culture of his own society. Contrary to received wisdom, I argue that Gökalp developed not just a model of modernity befitting Muslim Turks but also a distinctive general theory of social life, according to which the cultures of all societies are hybrid, i.e., blends of other (past and present) cultures. If this is correct, then Gökalp’s social thought is more than a mere specimen of late nationalist ideologies; it is applicable to all forms of social life just as much as the ideas of the European social theorists he cited
Is It a Puzzle to Estimate Econometric Models for The Turkish Economy?
This paper examines the roles and interrelationships among the main macroeconomic variables, namely the exchange rate, inflation rate, interest rate and real GDP in Turkey. It provides a descriptive data analysis in order to understand the behaviour of each variable and to explain the relationship between them. The data analysis has been performed considering the original and the decomposed variables over the five periods: 1987:01-2007:12; 1987:01-1994:03; 1994:04-2001:01; 2001:02-2007:12; and 2002:10-2007:12. Different lengths of the sample periods are selected for each variable covering the economic crises and different policy applications in order to compare the reasons and the consequences of different economic policy applications on these variables. It is concluded that the distribution of economic series is changing from one period to another. The contribution of this paper is to develop a base for econometric model construction for the Turkish economy all the way through their contemporaneous and causal relationship for different sub-sample periods.Inflation rate, Exchange rate, Interest rate, Real GDP, Descriptive data analysis, Turkey

SELF-EVALUATION OF EXCELLENCE OF DIDACTICAL-METHODICAL ORGANIZATION OF UNIVERSITY TEACHING
The total excellence of university teaching largely depends on pedagogical and didacticalmethodical competencies of university professors. The development and promotion of academic teaching is enabled by the modernization of the teaching process which does not encompass only modernization of curriculum but the entire didacticalmethodical organization of teaching. Pleasure and requirements of students are to be accentuated accordingly, as well as competencies of teachers and expectations of labor market. The purpose of this paper is to establish which element of didacticalmethodical organization of university teaching is the most important dimension of excellence of teaching as well as in what way university professors perform selfevaluation of the excellence of didacticalmethodical organization of teaching at the University of Tuzla. The analyticaldescriptive survey method was used as a variant of analyticaldescriptive method as well as procedures of analysis of contents and polling. It is supposed that there is statistically significant difference in selfevaluation of the importance of elements of excellence in didacticalmethodical organization of teaching at the University of Tuzla and that selfevaluations of the importance of individual elements of excellence of university teaching differ with regard to age, sex, teaching/academic title, years of experience in academic institutions and scientific field the faculty belongs to. The results of this research show that the excellence of planning and preparation and excellence in choice of teaching methods are the most important elements of excellence in the organization of university teaching, and that 90% of teaching personnel evaluates that the classes they organize are at very high level of excellence

An Assessment of Natural Resources Management Conflicts in the Working Landscapes of Mediterranean Turkey (Turkiye): Koprulu Kanyon National Park
Environmental conservation and natural resources management are critical global issues of the 21st century. The management of protected public lands emerges as a challenge particularly in developing countries because of the biophysical and socio-cultural importance of these lands. These lands are often referred to as \u27working landscapes\u27 where the natural systems and the collective actions of local residents have shaped one another in well-balanced interactions for generations. The working landscapes of the Köprülü Kanyon National Park (KKNP) in Turkey have provided the case study for this dissertation. Eleven villages exist within the park with a total of approximately 7,100 residents. The rich natural resources of the park have been contested by local communities, management and concessionaires. The objectives of the research were: first, to understand the fundamentals of the natural and socio-cultural dynamics within protected areas in general, and within the KKNP in particular; second, to examine the social conflicts which complicate the management of the KKNP; and third, to explore potential solutions whereby the stakeholders can cooperate in stabilizing the traditional dynamics of the park\u27s working landscapes. Qualitative data was collected via 38 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with local residents, managers and concessionaires. The research found that an array of social disturbances and conflicts impact the social fabric and harm the land-human integrity of the site. These include shifting demographics, changing lifestyles of the villagers, pressures from tourism, multiple governmental authorities and instable management. Yaylacýlýk tradition, a semi-sedentary form of pastoralism, has played a significant role in both the traditional ecology and the social relations within the communities of the KKNP; and its abandonment has severely impacted both social and biophysical conditions. Through yaylacýlýk local residents had managed the lands as common property. The establishment of the national park, changing life styles and the pressures on the local agricultural economy brought an end to yaylacýlýk . Now the resources are treated in effect as open pool resources, thus leading to their demise. Throughout the eventful past of the KKNP the local residents have come from being integral elements of the \u27working landscapes,\u27 to being as antagonistic enemies of the park management. The three ideal characteristic elements of the \u27working landscapes\u27 of the KKNP (controlled access, coordination and communication) which once were maintained by the yaylacýlýk tradition, can be re-institutionalized within the region through contemporary applications by neutral third party initiatives. Restoration, conservation and efficient management of biophysical resources and the natural environment should be the outcomes of the resolutions of social conflicts which can be accomplished by the restoration of these three elements of the social structure
