    As a framework of model building the essay starts with the definitions of systems and models and their relations, and the classical model generations. One has to bear in mind that systems are purpose-equivalent, and that models serve particular goals: teleological models are required. Additionally, holistic models, which take into account the life cycles, should be considered. Model-building uses prior knowledge of the system from theory, and it uses experimental data of the system. The latter information contains the best available knowledge-base about the system if the limitations and the uncertainties connected with test data are taken into account. This information makes it possible to answer the question: how accurately does the teleological model represent the reality (purpose-equivalent system)? The modelling process is often difficult to perform, and the resulting models are uncertain. The question then arises: how can model-building be supported by including tools like (machine) learning and self-organization?
