Space shuttle nonmetallic materials age life prediction
The chemiluminescence from samples of polybutadiene, Viton, Teflon, Silicone, PL 731 Adhesive, and SP 296 Boron-Epoxy composite was measured at temperatures from 25 to 150 C. Excellent correlations were obtained between chemiluminescence and temperature. These correlations serve to validate accelerated aging tests (at elevated temperatures) designed to predict service life at lower temperatures. In most cases, smooth or linear correlations were obtained between chemiluminescence and physical properties of purified polymer gums, including the tensile strength, viscosity, and loss tangent. The latter is a complex function of certain polymer properties. Data were obtained with far greater ease by the chemiluminescence technique than by the conventional methods of study. The chemiluminescence from the Teflon (Halon) samples was discovered to arise from trace amounts of impurities, which were undetectable by conventional, destructive analysis of the sample
Modeling the mobility of living organisms in heterogeneous landscapes: Does memory improve foraging success?
Thanks to recent technological advances, it is now possible to track with an
unprecedented precision and for long periods of time the movement patterns of
many living organisms in their habitat. The increasing amount of data available
on single trajectories offers the possibility of understanding how animals move
and of testing basic movement models. Random walks have long represented the
main description for micro-organisms and have also been useful to understand
the foraging behaviour of large animals. Nevertheless, most vertebrates, in
particular humans and other primates, rely on sophisticated cognitive tools
such as spatial maps, episodic memory and travel cost discounting. These
properties call for other modeling approaches of mobility patterns. We propose
a foraging framework where a learning mobile agent uses a combination of
memory-based and random steps. We investigate how advantageous it is to use
memory for exploiting resources in heterogeneous and changing environments. An
adequate balance of determinism and random exploration is found to maximize the
foraging efficiency and to generate trajectories with an intricate
spatio-temporal order. Based on this approach, we propose some tools for
analysing the non-random nature of mobility patterns in general.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, improved discussio
Microscopic structure and dynamics of air/water interface by computer simulations-comparison with sum-frequency generation experiments
The air/water interface was simulated and the mode amplitudes and their ratios of the effective nonlinear sum-frequency generation (SFG) susceptibilities (A_(eff)'s) were calculated for the ssp, ppp, and sps polarization combinations and compared with experiments. By designating “surface-sensitive” free OH bonds on the water surface, many aspects of the SFG measurements were calculated and compared with those inferred from experiment. We calculate an average tilt angle close to the SFG observed value of 35, an average surface density of free OH bonds close to the experimental value of about 2.8 × 10^(18) m^(−2), computed ratios of A_(eff)'s that are very similar to those from the SFG experiment, and their absolute values that are in reasonable agreement with experiment. A one-parameter model was used to calculate these properties. The method utilizes results available from independent IR and Raman experiments to obtain some of the needed quantities, rather than calculating them ab initio. The present results provide microscopic information on water structure useful to applications such as in our recent theory of on-water heterogeneous catalysis
Cryptic transcripts from a ubiquitous plasmid origin of replication confound tests for cis-regulatory function.
A vast amount of research on the regulation of gene expression has relied on plasmid reporter assays. In this study, we show that plasmids widely used for this purpose constitutively produce substantial amounts of RNA from a TATA-containing cryptic promoter within the origin of replication. Readthrough of these RNAs into the intended transcriptional unit potently stimulated reporter activity when the inserted test sequence contained a 3' splice site (ss). We show that two human sequences, originally reported to be internal ribosome entry sites and later to instead be promoters, mimic both types of element in dicistronic reporter assays by causing these cryptic readthrough transcripts to splice in patterns that allow efficient translation of the downstream cistron. Introduction of test sequences containing 3' ss into monocistronic luciferase reporter vectors widely used in the study of transcriptional regulation also created the false appearance of promoter function via the same mechanism. Across a large number of variants of these plasmids, we found a very highly significant correlation between reporter activity and levels of such spliced readthrough transcripts. Computational estimation of the frequency of cryptic 3' ss in genomic sequences suggests that misattribution of cis-regulatory function may be a common occurrence
The Purple Haze of Eta Carinae: Binary-Induced Variability?
Asymmetric variability in ultraviolet images of the Homunculus obtained with
the Advanced Camera for Surveys/High Resolution Camera on the Hubble Space
Telescope suggests that Eta Carinae is indeed a binary system. Images obtained
before, during, and after the recent ``spectroscopic event'' in 2003.5 show
alternating patterns of bright spots and shadows on opposite sides of the star
before and after the event, providing a strong geometric argument for an
azimuthally-evolving, asymmetric UV radiation field as one might predict in
some binary models. The simplest interpretation of these UV images, where
excess UV escapes from the secondary star in the direction away from the
primary, places the major axis of the eccentric orbit roughly perpendicular to
our line of sight, sharing the same equatorial plane as the Homunculus, and
with apastron for the hot secondary star oriented toward the southwest of the
primary. However, other orbital orientations may be allowed with more
complicated geometries. Selective UV illumination of the wind and ejecta may be
partly responsible for line profile variations seen in spectra. The brightness
asymmetries cannot be explained plausibly with delays due to light travel time
alone, so a single-star model would require a seriously asymmetric shell
ejection.Comment: 8 pages, fig 1 in color, accepted by ApJ Letter
INVESTIGATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YIELD RISK AND AGRI-ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS
Crop insurance provides risk reduction benefits yet may increase planted acres in risky areas. This paper investigates the relationship between environmental quality and crop insurance induced changes in cropping pattern. Results suggest that yield risk and soil erosion are positively correlated for the majority of acreage in the study area.Environmental Economics and Policy, Risk and Uncertainty,
Combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput photopotential and photocurrent screening of mixed-metal oxides for photoelectrochemical water splitting
A high-throughput method has been developed using a commercial piezoelectric inkjet printer for synthesis and characterization of mixed-metal oxide photoelectrode materials for water splitting. The printer was used to deposit metal nitrate solutions onto a conductive glass substrate. The deposited metal nitrate solutions were then pyrolyzed to yield mixed-metal oxides that contained up to eight distinct metals. The stoichiometry of the metal oxides was controlled quantitatively, allowing for the creation of vast libraries of novel materials. Automated methods were developed to measure the open-circuit potentials (Eoc), short-circuit photocurrent densities (Jsc), and current density vs. applied potential (J–E) behavior under visible light irradiation. The high-throughput measurement of Eoc is particularly significant because open-circuit potential measurements allow the interfacial energetics to be probed regardless of whether the band edges of the materials of concern are above, close to, or below the values needed to sustain water electrolysis under standard conditions. The Eoc measurements allow high-throughput compilation of a suite of data that can be associated with the composition of the various materials in the library, to thereby aid in the development of additional screens and to form a basis for development of theoretical guidance in the prediction of additional potentially promising photoelectrode compositions
