    Parametric analysis of response function in modeling combustion instability by a quasi-1d solver

    A parametric study of the CVRC combustor test case is carried out by a quasi-1D Eulerian solver including a pressure lag response function which is used to take into account the unsteady heat release, typically driving combustion instability phenomena. The parameters under investigation are those defining the selected response function that are its amplitude and characteristic time lag. Both stable and unstable cases have been obtained for a wide range of amplitude and time lag which allow to investigate limit cycles at moderate amplitude. The extension of the approach to even higher amplitude of limit cycles of the order of those actually obtained in CVRC is presently in progres

    Can Early Life Exposure to Permethrin lead to intergenerational effects?

    Pesticides are largely used in agriculture against pests and consequently are present in fruits and vegetables. The wide presence of pesticide residues in breast milk underline the risk for the population, focalizing the long-term consequence of early life pyrethroid exposure. The significant presence of pyrethroid metabolites in the urine of population over the world confirms that their presence in food is a global problem. It has been demonstrated that there is a correlation between the environmental exposure to pesticides and the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Neonatal exposure to Permethrin (PERM), a member of the family of synthetic pyrethroids, can induce neurodegeneration (i.e. Parkinson’s –like disease) and it can cause some alterations in striatum of rats, involving both genetic and epigenetic pathways. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the rat offspring (F1 generation) exposed to a low dose of PERM from postnatal day 6 to 21, presents alterations in Nurr1 gene expression as previously observed in early life permethrin treated male rats. Moreover, global DNA methylation was analyzed in untreated early life exposed mothers and offspring (F1 generation). Methods Through Nurr1gene expression analysis and global DNA methylation assessment in both PERM-treated parents and their untreated offspring, we investigated on the prospective intergenerational effect of this pesticide. Results 33% of progeny presents the same Nurr1 alteration as rats exposed to permethrin in early life. A decrease in global genome-wide DNA methylation was measured in mothers exposed in early life to permethrin as well as in their offspring, whereas untreated rats have a hypermethylated genomic DNA. Conclutions Intergenerational PERM-induced damage on progenies has been identified for the first time. On the light of these results, pesticide residues in the food could represent a risk factor for the health of children especially in early life when the brain is still in the developing phase. Further studies are needed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms associated with the damage

    Early-Life Exposure to Commercial Formulation Containing Deltamethrin and Cypermethrin Insecticides Impacts Redox System and Induces Unexpected Regional Effects in Rat Offspring Brain

    Several studies have shown that the oxidative impact of pesticides is most prevalent in rural environments where they are intensively used. At different levels, pyrethroids are reported to promote neurodegeneration; they share the ability to promote oxidative stress, and to induce mitochondrial impairments, a-synuclein overexpression and neuronal cell loss. The present study evaluates the impact of early-life exposure to a commercial formulation containing deltamethrin (DM) and cypermethrin (CYP) at a dose of 1/100 LD50 (1.28 and 2.5 mg/kg, respectively). Rats aged 30 days old, treated from the 6th to the 21st day of life, were tested for brain antioxidant activity and a-synuclein levels. Four regions of the brain were analyzed: the striatum, cerebellum, cortex and hippocampus. Our data demonstrated a significant increase in catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) antioxidant levels in the brain regions compared to the controls. Pups exhibited no significant changes in protein carbonyl levels and lipid peroxidation. Striatal a-synuclein expression was significantly reduced in the rats exposed to DM + CYP, while the treatment resulted in a non-significant increase in the other brain areas. These findings indicate unexpected effects of postnatal treatment with the commercial formulation containing DM and CYP on brain redox state and a-synuclein expression, suggesting an adaptive response

    Search for the Optical Counterpart of the Vela Pulsar X-ray Nebula

    Observations of the Vela pulsar region with the Chandra X-ray observatory have revealed the fine structure of its synchrotron pulsar-wind nebula (PWN), which showed an overall similarity with the Crab PWN. However, contrary to the Crab, no firm detection of the Vela PWN in optical has been reported yet. To search for the optical counterpart of the X-ray PWN, we analyzed deep optical observations performed with different telescopes. We compared the optical images with those obtained with the Chandra ACIS to search for extended emission patterns which could be identified as counterparts of the X-ray nebula elements. Although some features are seen in the optical images, we find no correlation with the X-ray structure. Thus, we conclude that the diffuse optical emission is more likely associated with filaments in the host Vela SNR. The derived upper limits on the optical flux from the PWN are compatibile, within the uncertainties, with the values expected on the basis of the extrapolations of the X-ray data.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures.     Sour Beer as Bioreservoir of Novel Craft Ale Yeast Cultures

    : The increasing demand for craft beer is driving the search for novel ale yeast cultures from brewing-related wild environments. The focus of bioprospecting for craft cultures is to identify feral yeasts suitable to imprint unique sensorial attributes onto the final product. Here, we integrated phylogenetic, genotypic, genetic, and metabolomic techniques to demonstrate that sour beer during aging in wooden barrels is a source of suitable craft ale yeast candidates. In contrast to the traditional lambic beer maturation phase, during the aging of sour-matured production-style beer, different biotypes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae dominated the cultivable in-house mycobiota, which were followed by Pichia membranifaciens, Brettanomyces bruxellensis, and Brettanomyces anomalus. In addition, three putative S. cerevisiae × Saccharomyces uvarum hybrids were identified. S. cerevisiae feral strains sporulated, produced viable monosporic progenies, and had the STA1 gene downstream as a full-length promoter. During hopped wort fermentation, four S. cerevisiae strains and the S. cerevisiae × S. uvarum hybrid WY213 exceeded non-Saccharomyces strains in fermentative rate and ethanol production except for P. membranifaciens WY122. This strain consumed maltose after a long lag phase, in contrast to the phenotypic profile described for the species. According to the STA1+ genotype, S. cerevisiae partially consumed dextrin. Among the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by S. cerevisiae and the S. cerevisiae × S. uvarum hybrid, phenylethyl alcohol, which has a fruit-like aroma, was the most prevalent. In conclusion, the strains characterized here have relevant brewing properties and are exploitable as indigenous craft beer starters

    Numerical and Experimental Investigation of a Lab-Scale Paraffin Motor with Swirled Injection of Gaseous Oxygen

    In this work the regression rate performance and flow physics of a lab-scale hybrid rocket engine burning gaseous oxygen and paraffin-based fuels are experimentally and numerically investigated. Regression rates are obtained by thickness-over-time averaging procedures and through a non-intrusive optical method enabling fuel grain port diameter tracking. A numerical rebuilding of the experimental data is performed with axisymmetric Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations, using sub-models accounting for the effects of turbulence, chemistry, radiation and fluid-surface interaction. A fairly good agreement is obtained between the numerical and experimental data

    The X-ray Spectrum of the Vela Pulsar Resolved with Chandra

    We report the results of the spectral analysis of two observations of the Vela pulsar with the Chandra X-ray observatory. The spectrum of the pulsar does not show statistically significant spectral lines in the observed 0.25-8.0 keV band. Similar to middle-aged pulsars with detected thermal emission, the spectrum consists of two distinct components. The softer component can be modeled as a magnetic hydrogen atmosphere spectrum - for the pulsar magnetic field B=3×1012B=3\times 10^{12} G and neutron star mass M=1.4MM=1.4 M_\odot and radius R=13R^\infty =13 km, we obtain \tef^\infty =0.68\pm 0.03 MK, Lbol=(2.6±0.2)×1032L_{\rm bol}^\infty = (2.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^{32} erg s1^{-1}, d=210±20d=210\pm 20 pc (the effective temperature, bolometric luminosity, and radius are as measured by a distant observer). The effective temperature is lower than that predicted by standard neutron star cooling models. A standard blackbody fit gives T=1.49±0.04T^\infty =1.49\pm 0.04 MK, Lbol=(1.5±0.4)×1032d2502L_{\rm bol}^\infty=(1.5\pm 0.4)\times 10^{32} d_{250}^2 erg s1^{-1} (d250d_{250} is the distance in units of 250 pc); the blackbody temperature corresponds to a radius, R=(2.1±0.2)d250R^\infty =(2.1\pm 0.2) d_{250} km, much smaller than realistic neutron star radii. The harder component can be modeled as a power-law spectrum, with parameters depending on the model adopted for the soft component - γ=1.5±0.3\gamma=1.5\pm 0.3, Lx=(1.5±0.4)×1031d2502L_x=(1.5\pm 0.4)\times 10^{31} d_{250}^2 erg s1^{-1} and γ=2.7±0.4\gamma=2.7\pm 0.4, Lx=(4.2±0.6)×1031d2502L_x=(4.2\pm 0.6)\times 10^{31} d_{250}^2 erg s1^{-1} for the hydrogen atmosphere and blackbody soft component, respectively (γ\gamma is the photon index, LxL_x is the luminosity in the 0.2--8 keV band).     Observations of the Crab Nebula and its pulsar in the far-ultraviolet and in the optical

    We present HST/STIS far-UV observations of the Crab nebula and its pulsar. Broad, blueshifted absorption arising in the nebula is seen in C IV 1550, reaching about 2500 km/s. This can be interpreted as evidence for a fast outer shell, and we adopt a spherically symmetric model to constrain the properties of this. We find that the density appears to decrease outward in the shell. A lower limit to the mass is 0.3 solar masses with an accompanying kinetic energy of 1.5EE{49} ergs. A massive 10^{51} erg shell cannot be excluded, but is less likely if the density profile is much steeper than R^{-4} and the velocity is <6000 km/s. The observations cover the region 1140-1720 A. With the time-tag mode of the spectrograph we obtain the pulse profile. It is similar to that in the near-UV, although the primary peak is marginally narrower. Together with the near-UV data, and new optical data from NOT, our spectrum of the pulsar covers the entire region from 1140-9250 A. Dereddening the spectrum gives a flat spectrum for E(B-V)=0.52, R=3.1. This dereddened spectrum of the Crab pulsar can be fitted by a power law with spectral index alpha_{\nu} = 0.11 +/- 0.04. The main uncertainty is the amount and characteristics of the interstel- lar reddening, and we have investigated the dependence of \alpha_{\nu} on E(B-V) and R. In the extended emission covered by our 25" x 0.5" slit in the far-UV, we detect C IV 1550 and He II 1640 emission lines from the Crab nebula. Several interstellar absorption lines are detected toward the pulsar. The Ly alpha absorption indicates a column density of 3.0+/-0.5\EE{21} cm^{-2} of neutral hydrogen, which agrees well with our estimate of E(B-V)=0.52 mag.     A Computational Method for Combustion in High Speed Flows

    A two-dimensional time-accurate numerical model to simulate complex reacting flowfields in chemical non-equilibrium is presented. The aim of this studyis to develop a computational tool which permits the analysis and the easy implementation of combustion phenomena for high speed flows. To construct an efficient numerical tool, while maintaining a reasonable accuracy, a semi-implicit numerical method was selected and verified for a hydrogen-air mixture. The numerical approach is based on a time-dependent, finite-volume integration of the governing equations suitably modified for chemical non-equilibrium. The evaluation of the reacting constants based on Gibbs free energy and the Van't Hoff equation allows a very easy implementation of the chemical model used, regardless of its complexity. Calculations were performed with adeguate temporal and spatial resolution for modeling the physical process for pratical calculation. Comparisons with numerical results are used for a verification of the numerical procedur

    Optical Spectrum of Main-, Inter- and Off-pulse Emission from Crab Pulsar

    A dedicated stroboscopic device was used to obtain optical spectra of the Crab main-pulse and inter-pulse as well as the spectrum of the underlying nebula when the pulsar is turned off. As the nebular emission is very inhomogeneous, our ability to effectively subtract the nebular background signal is crucial. No spectral lines intrinsic to the pulsar are detected. The main-pulse and the inter-pulse behave as power laws, both with the same de-reddened index Alpha = +0.2 +- 0.1. This value was obtained by subtracting the nebular spectrum at the exact position of the pulsar. The underlying nebula is redder, Alpha = -0.4 +- 0.1. Its emission lines are split into approaching (sim. -1200 km/s) and receding (sim. +600 km/s) components. The strength of emission line components and the flux in nebular continuum vary on arcsec scale.
