This study represents the species diversity and ecology of brackish water epiphyticalgae of Sundarbans. Out of 22 taxa, Cyanophyceae represent 50%, Chlorophyceae and Xanthophyceae were 36% and 14%, respectively. These algal taxa were studied in relationto physicochemical characters viz. water temperature, transparency, pH, salinity, phosphate and nitrate. To analyze the data, computerized statistical package was used tocalculate correlation co-efficient between the epiphytic algal distribution andphysicochemical factors. A dendrogram was also constructed to reveal the relationshipsamong different algae on the basis of their diversity in different seasons. Epiphytic algaltaxa showed maximum growth during summer and are more diverse and variable atdifferent stations. These taxa showed a correlation with the habitat

Statistical Evidence for Three classes of Gamma-ray Bursts

Two different multivariate clustering techniques, the K-means partitioning method and the Dirichlet process of mixture modeling, have been applied to the BATSE Gamma-ray burst (GRB) catalog, to obtain the optimum number of coherent groups. In the standard paradigm, GRB are classified in only two groups, the long and short bursts. However, for both the clustering techniques, the optimal number of classes was found to be three, a result which is consistent with previous statistical analysis. In this classification, the long bursts are further divided into two groups which are primarily differentiated by their total fluence and duration and hence are named low and high fluence GRB. Analysis of GRB with known red-shifts and spectral parameters suggests that low fluence GRB have nearly constant isotropic energy output of 10^{52} ergs while for the high fluence ones, the energy output ranges from 10^{52} to 10^{54} ergs. It is speculated that the three kinds of GRBs reflect three different origins: mergers of neutron star systems, mergers between white dwarfs and neutron stars, and collapse of massive stars.Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. The blood of Meghalaya Local pigs of different ages i.e. 0 day, 15 days, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months and 6 months) were collected and studied various cytological parameters like Hb. (g.percent), TEC (million/cmm), PVC (percent), ESR (mm/hr.), TLC (thousand/cmm), Neutrophil (percent), Eosinophil (percent) and Lymphocyte (percent). Newborn piglets showed an average Hb% of 6.9 ± 0.17, RBC counts of 3.81± 0.39 million/cmm of blood and which increased with the advancement of age. PVC% was found to be lowest in newborn piglets 18.3 ± 0.69 and highest in 6 months age 45.5 ± 0.51. Neutrophil count was significantly higher in newborn piglets 52.67 ± 1.35 and basophil was also observed to be present in the age group of 1 month, 2 months, and 6 months

    Get PDF
The study was initiated with an idea to investigate few genetic and environmental factors that affect sex ratio of Khasi local and their different crossbreds with Hampshire pigs. Individual data were collected of pure Khasi local and its crossbred with 50, 75 and 87.5 % Hampshire inheritance in different seasons like rainy (July to October), summer (March-June) and winter (Nov- Feb). The sex ratio for Khasi local crossbred with 50, 75 and 87.5 % Hampshire inheritance was 1.21 ± 0.16, 1.32 ± 0.16, 1.48 ± 0.16 an 1.32 ± 0.16 respectively with an overall mean sex ratio 1.38 ± 0.16, whereas, the sex ratio for spring, rainy and winter season was 1.31 ± 0.17, 1.29 ± 0.16 and 1.32 ± 0.15, respectively. Similarly, the sex ratio for larger litters and smaller litters was 1.40 ± 0.13 and 1.45 ± 0.13 respectively. This study concludes that crossbreds at different levels of inheritance, season and litter size had no effect on sex ratio

Perturbations on steady spherical accretion in Schwarzschild geometry

The stationary background flow in the spherically symmetric infall of a compressible fluid, coupled to the space-time defined by the static Schwarzschild metric, has been subjected to linearized perturbations. The perturbative procedure is based on the continuity condition and it shows that the coupling of the flow with the geometry of space-time brings about greater stability for the flow, to the extent that the amplitude of the perturbation, treated as a standing wave, decays in time, as opposed to the amplitude remaining constant in the Newtonian limit. In qualitative terms this situation simulates the effect of a dissipative mechanism in the classical Bondi accretion flow, defined in the Newtonian construct of space and time. As a result of this approach it becomes impossible to define an acoustic metric for a conserved spherically symmetric flow, described within the framework of Schwarzschild geometry. In keeping with this view, the perturbation, considered separately as a high-frequency travelling wave, also has its amplitude reduced.Comment: 8 pages, no figur

A CREB2-targeting microRNA is required for long-term memory after single-trial learning

    Get PDF
Although single-trial induced long-term memories (LTM) have been of major interest in neuroscience, how LTM can form after a single episode of learning remains largely unknown. We hypothesized that the removal of molecular inhibitory constraints by microRNAs (miRNAs) plays an important role in this process. To test this hypothesis, first we constructed small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) cDNA libraries from the CNS of Lymnaea stagnalis subjected to a single conditioning trial. Then, by next generation sequencing of these libraries, we identified a specific pool of miRNAs regulated by training. Of these miRNAs, we focussed on Lym-miR-137 whose seed region shows perfect complementarity to a target sequence in the 3’ UTR of the mRNA for CREB2, a well-known memory repressor. We found that Lym-miR-137 was transiently up-regulated 1 h after single-trial conditioning, preceding a down-regulation of Lym-CREB2 mRNA. Furthermore, we discovered that Lym-miR-137 is co-expressed with Lym-CREB2 mRNA in an identified neuron with an established role in LTM. Finally, using an in vivo loss-of-function approach we demonstrated that Lym-miR-137 is required for single-trial induced LTM

Development and characterizations ofultra-highmolecular weightEPDM/PPbasedTPVnanocomposites for automotive applications

This research article reports, the preparation of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) and TPV nanocomposites (TPVNs) based on EPDM and polypropylene (PP). New generation ultra-high molecular weight EPDM (UHMW-EPDM) and PP with nano-fillers (nano-clay and nano-silica) and has been studied and characterized extensively typically for automotive applications. This special type of UHM-EPDM-based TPVs exhibit superior physico-mechanical properties over conventional EPDM-based TPVs and in the presence of nano-fillers, they show even better physical properties. The TPVNs were prepared with a fixed EPDM: PP ratio and the nano fillers were varied at different concentrations. The influence of nano-fillers, especially hectorite nano-clay and nano-silica has been first explored through physico-mechanical properties. Tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at various strain are improved for nano-filler filled TPVNs. We have observed that due to the incorporation of nano-fillers into the TPV matrix, swelling has been decreased. From morphology (AFM, SEM) study, it is observed that the fillers are well dispersed in the TPV matrix and nano-silica fillers are well dispersed than nano-clay (hectorite). Furthermore, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies have also been pursued to get a better insight into the TPV system. These newly developed TPVs can be used as potential candidates for application in the automotive sector

Understanding the role of surfactants on the preparation of ZnS nanocrystals

We have synthesized surface modified ZnS nanoparticles of size 2–3 nm using non-ionic surfactant-stabilized reverse emulsions. The non-ionic surfactants in the Span series, i.e. sorbitan monolaurate (Span 20) and sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) of hydrophilic–lipophilic balance (HLB) values of 8.6 and 4.3, respectively, have been used for the stabilization of emulsions. The role of these surfactants in controlling the size and properties of the ZnS nanoparticles has been discussed. The triethylamine (TEA) has been proved to be the effective surface modifying (capping) agent for the preparation of free-standing ZnS nanoparticles. The Span 20 with the higher HLB value of 8.6 has been found to be highly suitable in synthesizing TEA-capped ZnS nanoparticles of smaller size and higher photophysical characteristics compared to that of the Span 80 of lower HLB value of 4.3. A mechanism for the formation of TEA-capped ZnS nanoparticles from the surfactant-stabilized reverse emulsions has been proposed
