The image of refugeeness and the realities of the refugee experience in a Canadian city

This is an ethnographic account of refugee resettlement as it occurs in a Reception House for government sponsored refugees. This thesis explores issues of agency and negotiation for those defined as refugees in an environment that can be complex, bureaucratic and controlled. Since Canada Immigration privatized the area of refugee resettlement, immigrant serving agencies are funded by the government to facilitate the refugee resettlement process. The contradictions of a system developed to assist refugees are explored at the local level. This thesis attempts to challenge the notion of forced migration, the image of refugeeness and homogenizing the people of the refugee category. While there is vast literature that deals with asylum seekers or refugee claimants, very little has specifically been written about government sponsored refugees. Although these refugees are accepted to Canada as permanent residents, they are still subjected to many of the same stereotypes as other refugees without permanent status

Objective: To conduct a review of the Clinical Research work of the Council in the field of asthma. Methods: A comprehensive manual search of Council′s publications pertaining to asthma was conducted to identify publications on the research work undertaken by the Council including CCRH Quarterly Bulletins (1982 to 2005), Clinical Research studies series and Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy (IJRH). Relevant research was categorized by study type and appraised according to study design with their clinical outcomes. Results: Only 20 publications pertaining to Asthma were found and 10 were selected consisting of observational studies and drug oriented studies. Conclusion: The positive outcome in controlling acute episodes of asthma, reducing the frequency and intensity of subsequent episodes and weaning of bronchodilators and other allopathic drugs have been reported. As only observational studies have been conducted, further pragmatic trials including randomized control studies are desirable

Feminist scholars of refugee and immigration studies have shown gender to be the organizing principle for resettlement experiences of newcomers. This chapter, co-authored by researchers and practitioners, focuses on how the gendered needs of the Yazidi refugee families in Calgary shaped their resettlement services and experiences. Based on keen observations by staff at the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society and the physicians and healthcare providers at the Mosaic Refugee Clinic in Calgary, combined with in-depth interviews conducted by University of Calgary researchers with nearly all Yazidi families in Calgary (45 families that include 241 family members) we focus on four key aspects: 1. Restructuring of the resettlement program by CCIS to meet the needs of Yazidi women and men, but mainly women; 2. Readjusting healthcare services by gender at the refugee clinic; 3. Care provisions in the families of the Yazidis that was fulfilled by women (internal and external to the families) care providers; and 4. Gendered and un-gendered educational outcomes for the children in Yazidi families. We argue that centring gender-based needs of the Yazidi community in the resettlement services have resulted in a feminist reorientation of the resettlement services and experiences of the Yazidis in Calgary.Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC

Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN), also known as black esophagus due to its appearance on endoscopy, classically involves the distal esophagus (97% of cases). AEN affecting the midesophagus with sparing of the distal esophagus is rare and usually occurs in patients with thoracic aortic aneurysmal (TAA) rupture or aortic dissection. Herein, we report a unique case of AEN in the midesophagus in a patient with an unruptured and undissected TAA
