Determining R-parity violating parameters from neutrino and LHC data
In supersymmetric models neutrino data can be explained by R-parity violating
operators which violate lepton number by one unit. The so called bilinear model
can account for the observed neutrino data and predicts at the same time
several decay properties of the lightest supersymmetric particle. In this paper
we discuss the expected precision to determine these parameters by combining
neutrino and LHC data and discuss the most important observables. We show that
one can expect a rather accurate determination of the underlying R-parity
parameters assuming mSUGRA relations between the R-parity conserving ones and
discuss briefly also the general MSSM as well as the expected accuracies in
case of a prospective e+ e- linear collider. An important observation is that
several parameters can only be determined up to relative signs or more

The Hunt for New Physics in the Flavour Sector with up vector-like quarks
We analyse the possible presence of New Physics (NP) in the Flavour Sector
and evaluate its potential for solving the tension between the experimental
values of \AJPKs and \BTNu with respect to the Standard Model (SM)
expectations. Updated model independent analyses, where NP contributions are
allowed in Bd - anti-Bd and Bs - anti-Bs transitions, suggest the need of New
Physics in the sector. A detailed analysis of recent Flavour data is then
presented in the framework of a simple extension of the SM, where a
vector-like isosinglet quark is added to the spectrum of the SM. Special
emphasis is given to the implications of this model for correlations among
various measurable quantities. We include constraints from all the relevant
quark flavour sectors and give precise predictions for selected rare processes.

model the existence of an up vector-like quark with a mass below

Online collaboration and cooperation : the recurring importance of evidence, rationale and viability
This paper investigates collaboration in teaching and learning and draws out implications for the promotion of collaboration within online environments. It is divided into four sections. First the case for collaboration, including specifically cooperative approaches, is explored. This case revolves around the impact of collaboration on the quality of learning and on learning outcomes. Collaboration is seen as constrained by context but, if structured and rewarded, it will bring important motivational and cognitive benefits. Next, the case for online collaboration is examined. This is based on longstanding arguments about the benefits of working together albeit in an environment which offers greater reach; a mix of media; and archives of interaction. The third section of the paper compares perspectives on online collaboration with a longer tradition of research into collaboration in general; it critiques the idea that online mediation offers a paradigm change in teaching and learning. The fourth section of the paper considers future directions for promoting online collaboration
Evaluation of appendicitis risk prediction models in adults with suspected appendicitis
Background
Appendicitis is the most common general surgical emergency worldwide, but its diagnosis remains challenging. The aim of this study was to determine whether existing risk prediction models can reliably identify patients presenting to hospital in the UK with acute right iliac fossa (RIF) pain who are at low risk of appendicitis.
Methods
A systematic search was completed to identify all existing appendicitis risk prediction models. Models were validated using UK data from an international prospective cohort study that captured consecutive patients aged 16–45 years presenting to hospital with acute RIF in March to June 2017. The main outcome was best achievable model specificity (proportion of patients who did not have appendicitis correctly classified as low risk) whilst maintaining a failure rate below 5 per cent (proportion of patients identified as low risk who actually had appendicitis).
Results
Some 5345 patients across 154 UK hospitals were identified, of which two‐thirds (3613 of 5345, 67·6 per cent) were women. Women were more than twice as likely to undergo surgery with removal of a histologically normal appendix (272 of 964, 28·2 per cent) than men (120 of 993, 12·1 per cent) (relative risk 2·33, 95 per cent c.i. 1·92 to 2·84; P < 0·001). Of 15 validated risk prediction models, the Adult Appendicitis Score performed best (cut‐off score 8 or less, specificity 63·1 per cent, failure rate 3·7 per cent). The Appendicitis Inflammatory Response Score performed best for men (cut‐off score 2 or less, specificity 24·7 per cent, failure rate 2·4 per cent).
Conclusion
Women in the UK had a disproportionate risk of admission without surgical intervention and had high rates of normal appendicectomy. Risk prediction models to support shared decision‐making by identifying adults in the UK at low risk of appendicitis were identified
Adaptation of yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Brettanomyces bruxellensis to winemaking conditions: a comparative study of stress genes expression
International audienceBrettanomyces is the major microbial cause for wine spoilage worldwide and causes significant economic losses. Like Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it is well adapted to winemaking, but molecular pathways involved in this acclimatization are still unknown. In this work, we report a time-scale comparison between the two yeasts coping with alcoholic fermentation. Orthologs of some well-characterized stress genes of S. cerevisiae were searched by sequence alignment in the Dekkera/Brettanomyces partial genome; nine genes were finally selected on the basis on their similarity and involvement in adaptation to wine. Transcript analysis during a model grape juice fermentation indicates that a subset of genes (i.e., ATP1, ERG6, VPS34) shows peculiar expression patterns in Brettanomyces bruxellensis but also that some common regulations of stress response exist between the two yeasts, although with different timing (i.e., for MSN4, SNF1, HSP82, NTH1). This suggests that B. bruxellensis efficient survival in such challenging conditions is due to mechanisms unique to it, together with a conserved yeast stress response. This study, although limited by the poor genetic data available on B. bruxellensis, provides first insights into its gene expression remodeling in winemaking and opens new frames for further investigations
