state generation of three Josephson qubits in presence of bosonic baths
We analyze an entangling protocol to generate tripartite
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system consisting of three
superconducting qubits with pairwise coupling. The dynamics of the open quantum
system is investigated by taking into account the interaction of each qubit
with an independent bosonic bath with an ohmic spectral structure. To this end
a microscopic master equation is constructed and exactly solved. We find that
the protocol here discussed is stable against decoherence and dissipation due
to the presence of the external baths.Comment: 16 pages and 4 figure
Non-Markovian dissipative dynamics of two coupled qubits in independent reservoirs: a comparison between exact solutions and master equation approaches
The reduced dynamics of two interacting qubits coupled to two independent
bosonic baths is investigated. The one-excitation dynamics is derived and
compared with that based on the resolution of appropriate non-Markovian master
equations. The Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless projection
operator techniques are exploited to provide a description of the non-Markovian
features of the dynamics of the two-qubits system. The validity of such
approximate methods and their range of validity in correspondence to different
choices of the parameters describing the system are brought to light.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to PR
Association between diverticulosis and colonic neoplastic lesions in individuals with a positive faecal immunochemical test
Background The association between diverticulosis and colonic neoplastic lesions has been suggested, but data in literature are conflicting. This study aimed to investigate such a relationship in patients participating in a colorectal cancer screening program who underwent high-quality colonoscopy. Methods Data from consecutive individuals 50-75 years of age with a positive faecal immunological test were considered. Diverticulosis was categorised as present or absent. The prevalence of neoplastic lesions (adenoma, advanced adenoma, and cancer) between individuals with and those without diverticula was compared. A multivariate analysis was performed. Results Overall, data from 970 consecutive individuals were evaluated, and diverticulosis was detected in 354 (36.5%) cases. At least one adenoma was detected in 490 (50.5%) people, at least one advanced adenoma in 264 (27.2%), multiple adenoma in 71 (7.3%), whilst a cancer was diagnosed in 48 (4.9%) cases. At univariate analysis, the adenoma detection rate in patients with diverticula was significantly higher than in controls (55.9% vs 47.4%; p=0.011). At multivariate analysis, presence of diverticulosis was an independent risk factor for both adenoma detection rate (OR=1.58; 95% CI=1.14-2.18; p=0.006) and advanced adenoma (OR=1.57; 95% CI=1.10-2.24; p=0.013), but not for colorectal cancer. Conclusions In a colorectal screening setting, the adenoma detection rate was significantly higher in individuals with diverticulosis than in controls

Resonant effects in a SQUID qubit subjected to non adiabatic changes
By quickly modifying the shape of the effective potential of a double SQUID
flux qubit from a single-well to a double-well condition, we experimentally
observe an anomalous behavior, namely an alternance of resonance peaks, in the
probability to find the qubit in a given flux state. The occurrence of
Landau-Zener transitions as well as resonant tunneling between degenerate
levels in the two wells may be invoked to partially justify the experimental
results. A quantum simulation of the time evolution of the system indeed
suggests that the observed anomalous behavior can be imputable to quantum
coherence effects. The interplay among all these mechanisms has a practical
implication for quantum computing purposes, giving a direct measurement of the
limits on the sweeping rates possible for a correct manipulation of the qubit
state by means of fast flux pulses, avoiding transitions to non-computational
states.Comment: 6 pages and 6 figures. The paper, as it is, has been accepted for

Master equations for two qubits coupled via a nonlinear mode
A microscopic master equation describing the dynamics of two qubits coupled via a nonlinear mediator is constructed supposing that the two qubits, as well as the nonlinear mode, interact, each with its own independent bosonic bath. Generally speaking the master equation derived in this way represents a more appropriate tool for studying the dynamics of open quantum systems. Indeed we showthat it is more complex than the phenomenological master equation, constructed simply adding ad hoc dissipative terms
First in-situ sensing of volcanic gas plume composition at Boiling Lake (Dominica, West Indies)
Dominica, a small Caribbean island between Martinique (to the South) and
Guadeloupe (to the North), is, because of the high number of potentially active volcanic centres, one of the most susceptible sites to volcanic risk in the Lesser Antilles arc. Seven major volcanic centres, active during the last 10ka, are considered likely to erupt again, and one of these is the
Valley of Desolation volcanic complex. This is an area of 0.5 km2, located in on SW Dominica, where a number of small explosion craters, hot springs, bubbling pools and fumaroles testify for vigorous and persistent hydrothermal activity. Two main phreatic explosions have been documented in historical time (1880 and 1997), and the most likely centre of future activity is the
Boiling Lake, a nearby high-T volcanic crater lake produced by an undated phreatic/phreatomagmatic explosion. Hot (80 to 90\ub0C) and acidic (4-6) waters normally characterize the steady-state activity of the lake, whereby which vigorous gas upwelling in the lake’s centre feeds a persistent steaming plume. Stability of the Boiling Lake has occasionally been interrupted in the
past (since 1876) by crises, the most recent in 2004, involving rapid draining of the lake and changes in water temperature and pH, likely as a result of drastic decrease of hydrothermal fluid input into the lake. While the chemical and isotopic composition of the lake waters is well
characterised, there are no compositional data available for the gas plume leaving the lake, due to
inherent difficulties in direct gas sampling. Here, we present the results of the first direct measurements of the Boiling Lake’s plume, performed by using the MultiGAS technique in February 2012. We acquired 0.5 Hz time-series of H2O, CO2, H2S and SO2 plume concentrations, which were seen to peak (with maximum background-corrected concentrations of 3680, 101 and 25 ppm for respectively H2O, CO2 and H2S) during phases of visible increase in lake outgassing.
SO2 was virtually absent in the plume. From the concentration data, the characteristic CO2/H2S (5.2\ub10.4) and H2O/CO2 (31.4\ub16) volatile ratios in the Boiling lake’s atmospheric plume were
derived. This reveals similar C to S signature for Boiling lake and Valley of Desolation (for which we also obtained data using the same technique), likely indicative of common source reservoir.
The Boiling lake’s plume is far more H2O-rich than the Valley of Desolation gas, suggesting that a significant fraction of in-plume H2O in the former originates from re-evaporation of the lake water itself. Our data here provide a first compositional baseline for quiescent volcanic gas emissions at
Boiling Lake, and may form the basis to stimulate emerging geochemical monitoring programs in the area
Nonlocal properties of entangled two-photon generalized binomial states in two separate cavities
We consider entangled two-photon generalized binomial states of the
electromagnetic field in two separate cavities. The nonlocal properties of this
entangled field state are analyzed by studying the electric field correlations
between the two cavities. A Bell's inequality violation is obtained using an
appropriate dichotomic cavity operator, that is in principle measurable.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Adiabatic and non-adiabatic perturbations for loop quantum cosmology
We generalize the perturbations theory of loop quantum cosmology to a
hydrodynamical form and define an effective curvature perturbation on an
uniform density hypersurfaces . As in the classical cosmology,
should be gauge-invariant and conservation on the large scales. The
evolutions of both the adiabatic and the non-adiabatic perturbations for a
multi-fluids model are investigated in the framework of the effective
hydrodynamical theory of loop quantum cosmology with the inverse triad
correction. We find that, different from the classical cosmology, the evolution
of the large-scales non-adiabatic entropy perturbation can be driven by an
adiabatic curvature perturbation and this adiabatic source for the
non-adiabatic perturbation is a quantum effect. As an application of the
related formalism, we study a decay model and give out the numerical results.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
