High-Resolution X-ray Imaging Studies of Neutron Stars, Pulsar Wind Nebulae and Supernova Remnants
Supernova remnants serve as nearby laboratories relevant to many areas in
Astrophysics, from stellar and galaxy evolution to extreme astrophysics and the
formation of the heavy elements in the Universe. The Chandra X-ray mission has
enabled a giant leap forward in studying both SNRs and their compact stellar
remnants on sub-arcsecond scale. However, such high-resolution imaging studies
have been mostly limited to the nearby and/or relatively bright objects. There
is no question that we are missing a large population, especially in external
galaxies. Within our own Galaxy, we are presented with new fundamental
questions related to neutron stars' diversity, kicks, relativistic winds and
the way these objects interact with, and impact, their host environments. In
this white paper, we highlight some of the breakthroughs to be achieved with
future X-ray missions (such as the proposed AXIS probe) equipped with
sub-arcsecond imaging resolution and an order of magnitude improvement in

Endoscopic Biliary Drainage Using Guidewire Cannulation in a Case with Severe Duodenal Stenosis Caused by Duodenal Undifferentiated Carcinoma
We present a case of duodenal carcinoma, 12 cm in size, with severe stenosis at the second portion of the duodenum. When the patient developed obstructive jaundice, it was impossible to perform endoscopic biliary drainage by standard cannulation due to the stenosis, but was succeeded by wire-guided cannulation using papillotome. Histology of the tumor showed undifferentiated carcinoma without differentiation to any specific cell type. Systemic chemotherapy was started with 5-FU, leucovorin and oxaliplatin. Biliary stent worked well until the patient succumbed three months after. Herein we demonstrate the new advantage of wire-guided cannulation in case of duodenal stenosis
What Behaviors Are Important for Successful Weight Maintenance?
Purpose. To examine behavioral factors related to successful weight maintenance. Methods. Subjects were 90 middle-aged participants who attended a weight loss program and were followed for one year. The subjects were classified into either successful weight maintainers (maintained a weight loss of 5% or more from their initial weight for one year) (SWM) or unsuccessful weight maintainers (USWM), and weight control practice, stress, obstacles, support, and self-efficacy during the program and follow-up period were compared. Results. SWM had mean loss of 12% from their initial weight during the program. They showed a greater improvement in their regularity of eating, walked more, and felt less stress regarding their increased physical activity than the USWM. During the follow-up period, significantly more SWM participants had self-efficacy (for measuring weight, practicing dietary objective, and assessing the practice and keeping records), actually kept records and measured weight more than the USWM participants. In contrast, more USWM participants felt stress about measuring weight. Conclusion. In addition to a substantial initial weight loss due to an increased amount of physical activity, having a higher self-efficacy and consistently keeping records of one's activities, as well as regularly weighing themselves, may be important for successful weight maintenance
Association of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor with hepatic enzymes, AST/ALT ratio, and FIB-4 index in middle-aged and older women
Substantial evidence suggests an important role of liver function in brain health. Liver function is clinically assessed by measuring the activity of hepatic enzymes in the peripheral blood. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important regulator of brain function. Therefore, we hypothesized that blood BDNF levels are associated with liver function and fibrosis. To test this hypothesis, in this cross-sectional study, we investigated whether serum BDNF concentration is associated with liver enzyme activity, aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/ alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio, and fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index in middle-aged and older women. We found that serum BDNF level showed a significant positive association with ALT and γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) activity and negative association with FIB-4 index, and a trend of negative association with the AST/ALT ratio after adjustment for age. Additionally, these associations remained statistically significant even after adjustment for body mass index (BMI) and fasting blood glucose level. These results demonstrate associations of serum BDNF levels with liver enzymes and hepatic fibrosis-related indices, which may underlie liver-brain interactions
A Case of Mediastinal Lymph Node Carcinoma of Unknown Primary Site Treated with Docetaxel and Cisplatin with Concurrent Thoracic Radiation Therapy
Mediastinal lymph node carcinoma of unknown primary site is rare and may have a better prognosis if extensive treatment is performed. Case, A 69-year-old-male presented with a persistent cough. Chest computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a large tumor 9.5×8.2cm, in the mediastinum, compressing the right main bronchus, the right pulmonary artery, and the superior vena cava. Because fiberoptic bronchoscopy was insufficient for diagnosis, mediastinoscopic tumor biopsy under general anesthesia was undertaken. Histological examination revealed adenocarcinoma. Extensive examinations revealed no other neoplastic lesion except in the mediastinum. Mediastinal lymph node carcinoma of unknown primary site was diagnosed. The patient was treated with docetaxel and cisplatin with concurrent thoracic radiation therapy. A month after the start of chemoradiotherapy, the mediastinal tumor regressed markedly. The patient remained free of symptoms without regrowth of the primary site. Exploration of the body showed no further abnormalities 20 months after disease onset
Suzaku observations of the Hydra A cluster out to the virial radius
We report Suzaku observations of the northern half of the Hydra A cluster out
to ~1.4 Mpc, reaching the virial radius. This is the first Suzaku observations
of a medium-size (kT ~3 keV) cluster out to the virial radius. Two observations
were conducted, north-west and north-east offsets, which continue in a filament
direction and a void direction of the large-scale structure of the Universe,
respectively. The X-ray emission and distribution of galaxies elongate in the
filament direction. The temperature profiles in the two directions are mostly
consistent with each other within the error bars and drop to 1.5 keV at 1.5
r_500. As observed by Suzaku in hot clusters, the entropy profile becomes
flatter beyond r_500, in disagreement with the r^1.1 relationship that is
expected from accretion shock heating models. When scaled with the average
intracluster medium (ICM) temperature, the entropy profiles of clusters
observed with Suzaku are universal and do not depend on system mass. The
hydrostatic mass values in the void and filament directions are in good
agreement, and the Navarro, Frenk, and White universal mass profile represents
the hydrostatic mass distribution up to ~ 2 r_500. Beyond r_500, the ratio of
gas mass to hydrostatic mass exceeds the result of the Wilkinson microwave
anisotropy probe, and at r_100, these ratios in the filament and void
directions reach 0.4 and 0.3, respectively. We discuss possible deviations from
hydrostatic equilibrium at cluster outskirts. We derived radial profiles of the
gasmass- to-light ratio and iron-mass-to-light ratio out to the virial radius.
Within r_500, the iron-mass-to-light ratio of the Hydra A cluster was compared

Impact of Chandra calibration uncertainties on galaxy cluster temperatures: application to the Hubble Constant
We perform a uniform, systematic analysis of a sample of 38 X-ray galaxy
clusters with three different Chandra calibrations. The temperatures change
systematically between calibrations. Cluster temperatures change on average by
roughly ~6% for the smallest changes and roughly ~13% for the more extreme
changes between calibrations. We explore the effects of the changing cluster
spectral properties on Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) and X-ray determinations
of the Hubble constant. The Hubble parameter changes by +10% and -13% between
the current calibration and two previous Chandra calibrations, indicating that
changes in the cluster temperature basically explain the entire change in H_0.
Although this work focuses on the difference in spectral properties and
resultant Hubble parameters between the calibrations, it is intriguing to note
that the newer calibrations favor a lower value of the Hubble constant, H_0 ~
60 km s-1 Mpc-1, typical of results from SZE/X-ray distances. Both galaxy
clusters themselves and the details of the instruments must be known precisely
to enable reliable precision cosmology with clusters, which will be feasible
with combined efforts from ongoing observations and planned missions and
