    Optimal Planning of Container Terminal Operations

    Due to globalization and international trade, moving goods using a mixture of transportation modes has become a norm; today, large vessels transport 95% of the international cargos. In the first part of this thesis, the emphasis is on the sea-land intermodal transport. The availability of different modes of transportation (rail/road/direct) in sea-land intermodal transport and container flows (import, export, transhipment) through the terminal are considered simultaneously within a given planning time horizon. We have also formulated this problem as an Integer Programming (IP) model and the objective is to minimise storage cost, loading and transportation cost from/to the customers. To further understand the computational complexity and performance of the model, we have randomly generated a large number of test instances for extensive experimentation of the algorithm. Since, CPLEX was unable to find the optimal solution for the large test problems; a heuristic algorithm has been devised based on the original IP model to find near „optimal‟ solutions with a relative error of less than 4%. Furthermore, we developed and implemented Lagrangian Relaxation (LR) of the IP formulation of the original problem. The bounds derived from LR were improved using sub-gradient optimisation and computational results are presented. In the second part of the thesis, we consider the combined problems of container assignment and yard crane (YC) deployment within the container terminal. A new IP formulation has been developed using a unified approach with the view to determining optimal container flows and YC requirements within a given planning time horizon. We designed a Branch and Cut (B&C) algorithm to solve the problem to optimality which was computationally evaluated. A novel heuristic approach based on the IP formulation was developed and implemented in C++. Detailed computational results are reported for both the exact and heuristic algorithms using a large number of randomly generated test problems. A practical application of the proposed model in the context of a real case-study is also presented. Finally, a simulation model of container terminal operations based on discrete-event simulation has been developed and implemented with the view of validating the above optimisation model and using it as a test bed for evaluating different operational scenarios

    Interference Alignment for Partially Connected MIMO Cellular Networks

    In this paper, we propose an iterative interference alignment (IA) algorithm for MIMO cellular networks with partial connectivity, which is induced by heterogeneous path losses and spatial correlation. Such systems impose several key technical challenges in the IA algorithm design, namely the overlapping between the direct and interfering links due to the MIMO cellular topology as well as how to exploit the partial connectivity. We shall address these challenges and propose a three stage IA algorithm. As illustration, we analyze the achievable degree of freedom (DoF) of the proposed algorithm for a symmetric partially connected MIMO cellular network. We show that there is significant DoF gain compared with conventional IA algorithms due to partial connectivity.     Design of automatic vision-based inspection system for solder joint segmentation

    Purpose: Computer vision has been widely used in the inspection of electronic components. This paper proposes a computer vision system for the automatic detection, localisation, and segmentation of solder joints on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) under different illumination conditions. Design/methodology/approach: An illumination normalization approach is applied to an image, which can effectively and efficiently eliminate the effect of uneven illumination while keeping the properties of the processed image the same as in the corresponding image under normal lighting conditions. Consequently special lighting and instrumental setup can be reduced in order to detect solder joints. These normalised images are insensitive to illumination variations and are used for the subsequent solder joint detection stages. In the segmentation approach, the PCB image is transformed from an RGB color space to a YIQ color space for the effective detection of solder joints from the background. Findings: The segmentation results show that the proposed approach improves the performance significantly for images under varying illumination conditions. Research limitations/implications: This paper proposes a front-end system for the automatic detection, localisation, and segmentation of solder joint defects. Further research is required to complete the full system including the classification of solder joint defects. Practical implications: The methodology presented in this paper can be an effective method to reduce cost and improve quality in production of PCBs in the manufacturing industry.     Measuring the equation of state of trapped ultracold bosonic systems in an optical lattice with in-situ density imaging

    We analyze quantitatively how imaging techniques with single-site resolution allow to measure thermodynamical properties that cannot be inferred from time-of-light images for the trapped Bose-Hubbard model. If the normal state extends over a sufficiently large range, the chemical potential and the temperature can be extracted from a single shot, provided the sample is in thermodynamic equilibrium. When the normal state is too narrow, temperature is low but can still be extracted using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem over the entire trap range as long as the local density approximation remains valid, as was recently suggested by Qi Zhou and Tin-Lun Ho [arXiv:0908.3015]. However, for typical present-day experiments, the number of samples needed is of the order of 1000 in order to get the temperature at least 10%10 \% accurate, but it is possible to reduce the variance by 2 orders of magnitude if the density-density correlation length is short, which is the case for the Bose-Hubbard model. Our results provide further evidence that cold gases in an optical lattices can be viewed as quantum analog computers.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

Ce transfert d’activités vers le secteur privé nécessite cependant, pour son efficacité en tant que moteur de la croissance économique un certain nombre de facteurs liés à la crédibilité et à la pérennité. En effet, outre les réformes structurelles en cours (mise en place des conditions d’une stabilité et d’une prévisibilité politique, administrative et juridique), il faut donner un coup de pouce à l’entrepreneur à un stade où le système bancaire hésite encore à intervenir.
