    Effect of Post Weld Heat Treatment On Micro Structure & Corrosion Behavior Of Aa 7075 Friction Stir Welds

    Aluminum AL7075 alloy is an attractive option for aerospace components in naval and defence applications due to its corrosion resistance and absence of melting related problems. This project reports the effects of post weld heat treatments, namely Peak age treatment and Retrogression and reaging on microstructure and mechanical properties of 12 mm thick friction stir welded joints of high strength AA7075 aluminum alloy. Welds were characterized for metallo graphy to carry out the micro structural studies using Optical Microscopy, hardness measurements were done using Vickers hardness tester. Potentio-dynamic polarization tests were carried out to determine the pitting corrosion behavior done using a basic electrochemical system. The results show that welds under peak age treatment     (T-6) exhibit better mechanical properties compared to RRA treatment. Welds under Retrogression and reaging exhibit better corrosion resistance with marginal decrease in strength and which is attributed to the micro structural changes observed in both the weld joints

    Measuring Success for a Future Vision: Defining Impact in Science Gateways/Virtual Research Environments

    Scholars worldwide leverage science gateways/VREs for a wide variety of research and education endeavors spanning diverse scientific fields. Evaluating the value of a given science gateway/VRE to its constituent community is critical in obtaining the financial and human resources necessary to sustain operations and increase adoption in the user community. In this paper, we feature a variety of exemplar science gateways/VREs and detail how they define impact in terms of e.g., their purpose, operation principles, and size of user base. Further, the exemplars recognize that their science gateways/VREs will continuously evolve with technological advancements and standards in cloud computing platforms, web service architectures, data management tools and cybersecurity. Correspondingly, we present a number of technology advances that could be incorporated in next-generation science gateways/VREs to enhance their scope and scale of their operations for greater success/impact. The exemplars are selected from owners of science gateways in the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) clientele in the United States, and from the owners of VREs in the International Virtual Research Environment Interest Group (VRE-IG) of the Research Data Alliance. Thus, community-driven best practices and technology advances are compiled from diverse expert groups with an international perspective to envisage futuristic science gateway/VRE innovations

    Prevalence of anaemia in older persons: systematic review

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ageing populations will impact on healthcare provision, especially since extra years are not necessarily spent in good health. It is important to identify and understand the significance of common medical problems in older people. Anaemia may be one such problem. We report on the prevalence of anaemia in cohorts of elderly people in the general population. The presence of anaemia is associated with a worse prognosis for both morbidity and mortality.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Electronic searching and reference lists of published reports were used to identify studies that reported on prevalence of anaemia in cohorts of at least 100 individuals predominantly aged 65 years and over living in developed countries, together with criteria used to define anaemia. Studies of anaemia prevalence in specific disease groups or published before 1980 were excluded. Prevalence data for the entire cohort, for men and women separately and for different age bands were extracted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Forty-five studies contributed data. Thirty-four studies (n = 85,409) used WHO criteria to define anaemia. The weighted mean prevalence was 17% (3–50%) overall, and 12% (3–25%) in studies based in the community (27, n = 69,975), 47% (31–50%) in nursing homes (3, n = 1481), and 40% (40–72%) in hospital admissions (4, n = 13,953). Anaemia prevalence increased with age, was slightly higher in men than women, and was higher in black people than white. Most individuals classified as anaemic using WHO criteria were only mildly anaemic.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Anaemia, as defined by WHO criteria, is common in older people living in the community and particularly common in nursing home residents and hospital admissions. Predicted demographic changes underline the need to understand more about anaemia in older people.</p

    Evaluating mobile games for diabetes education

    Mobile games can be effective, evidence-based, and motivating tools for the promotion of children's health. Traditional method for diabetic education relies heavily on written materials and there is only a limited amount of resources targeted at educating diabetic children. In our earlier work, we proposed a novel approach for designing computer games aimed for educating children with diabetes. In this paper, we apply our game design to a mobile Android game (Mario Brothers). We also introduce three heuristics that are specifically designed for evaluating the mobile game, by adapting traditional usability heuristics. The results of a preliminary evaluation study, conducted for a week, showed that the children found the game engaging and it helped enhanced their knowledge of healthy diet and lifestyle

    Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) treated with romiplostim in routine clinical practice: retrospective study from the United Kingdom ITP Registry

    Background Romiplostim is a thrombopoietin‐mimetic peptibody for adult refractory chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). We aimed to describe ITP patients receiving romiplostim, platelet counts and romiplostim usage in UK clinical practice. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of patients in the UKITP Registry who received romiplostim between October 2009 and January 2015, including data up to 6 months before romiplostim initiation through follow‐up. Results Of 1440 patients in the UKITP Registry, 118 adults with primary ITP were eligible. Before romiplostim, 22% had splenectomy, 12% received platelet transfusion, 97% received ≥ 1 different ITP medication and 77% received ≥ 3. Most patients (73%) initiated romiplostim ≥ 1 year after ITP diagnosis (chronic phase). The mean duration of romiplostim treatment was 5.7 (SE 0.9) months, and the median was 1.4 months (IQR: 0.2, 6.5). Mean platelet count before romiplostim was 38 × 109/L, rising to 103 × 109/L within 1 month, and remaining 50‐150 × 109/L through up to 3 years of follow‐up. After romiplostim, 4% of patients had splenectomy, 6% received platelet transfusion, and 57% received just one ITP medication other than romiplostim. Conclusion The study provides valuable insights into the real‐world use of romiplostim in primary ITP in routine practice and highlighted the timing of romiplostim initiation at different ITP disease phases

    Feasibility of acute thrombolytic therapy for stroke

    Background: Thrombolysis is an expensive medical intervention for ischemic stroke and hence there is a need to study the feasibility of thrombolysis in rural India. Aims: To asses the feasibility and limitations of providing thrombolytic therapy to acute ischemic stroke patients in a rural Indian set-up. Material and Methods: The first 64 consecutive patients registered under the Acute Stroke Registry in a university referral hospital with a rural catchment area were studied as per a detailed protocol and questionnaire. Results: Of the 64 patients 44 were ischemic strokes, and 20 were hemorrhagic. Thirteen (29.55%) patients with ischemic stroke reached a center with CT scan facility within 3 hours, of whom only 7 (15.91%) were eligible to receive thrombolytic therapy as per the existing clinical and radiological criteria, but none received the therapy. Of the remaining 31 (70.45%) who arrived late, 11 (25%) had no clinical and radiological contraindications for thrombolysis, except the time factor. All the patients belonged to a low socioeconomic status and a rural background. Conclusion: Though a large proportion of ischemic stroke patients were eligible to receive thrombolytic therapy, the majority could not reach a center with adequate facilities within the recommended time window. More alarmingly, even for those patients who reached within the time window, no significant attempt was made to initiate thrombolysis. These data call not only for attention to improve existing patient transport facilities, but also for improving the awareness of efficacy and therapeutic window of thrombolysis in stroke, among the public as well as primary care doctors
