    Magnetohydrodynamic shocks in and above post-flare loops: two-dimensional simulation and a simplified model

    Solar flares are an explosive phenomenon, where super-sonic flows and shocks are expected in and above the post-flare loops. To understand the dynamics of post-flare loops, a two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (2D MHD) simulation of a solar flare has been carried out. We found new shock structures in and above the post-flare loops, which were not resolved in the previous work by Yokoyama and Shibata 2001. To study the dynamics of flows along the reconnected magnetic field, kinematics and energetics of the plasma are investigated along selected field lines. It is found that shocks are crucial to determine the thermal and flow structures in the post-flare loops. On the basis of the 2D MHD simulation, we have developed a new post-flare loop model which we call the pseudo-2D MHD model. The model is based on the 1D MHD equations, where all the variables depend on one space dimension and all the three components of the magnetic and velocity fields are considered. Our pseudo-2D model includes many features of the multi-dimensional MHD processes related to magnetic reconnection (particularly MHD shocks), which the previous 1D hydrodynamic models are not able to include. We compare the shock formation and energetics of a specific field line in the 2D calculation with those in our pseudo-2D MHD model, and we found that they give similar results. This model will allow us to study the evolution of the post-flare loops in a wide parameter space without expensive computational cost and without neglecting important physics associated with magnetic reconnection.Comment: 51 pages, 22 figures.     Interoception is associated with the impact of eye contact on spontaneous facial mimicry

The current study aimed to elucidate the relationship between interoception and two factors underlying social cognition: self-other boundary and sensitivity to social cues. We measured performance in a heartbeat perception task as an index of interoceptive accuracy (IAc), the frequency of spontaneous facial mimicry (SFM) as an index of self-other boundary, and the degree of the effect of eye contact on SFM (difference in SFM between conditions in which models’ eyes were directed to and averted from participants) as an index of social-cue sensitivity, and tested correlations among these measures. The results revealed that IAc and SFM were positively correlated only in the direct gaze condition. The extent of the effect of eye contact on SFM (difference in frequency between direct vs. averted conditions) was positively correlated with IAc. These overall findings were also observed in separate analyses of male and female participant groups, supporting the robustness of the findings. The results suggest that interoception is related to sensitivity to social cues, and may also be related to the self-other boundary with modulation by social context

    Analyses of integrated EPID images for on-treatment quality assurance to account for interfractional variations in volumetric modulated arc therapy

    Purpose: To investigate the effects of interfractional variation, such as anatomical changes and setup errors, on dose delivery during treatment for prostate cancer (PC) and head and neck cancer (HNC) by courses of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) aided by on‐treatment electronic portal imaging device (EPID) images. Methods: Seven patients with PC and 20 patients with HNC who had received VMAT participated in this study. After obtaining photon fluence at the position of the EPID for each treatment arc from on‐treatment integrated EPID images, we calculated the differences between the fluence for the first fraction and each subsequent fraction for each arc. The passing rates were investigated based on a tolerance level of 3% of the maximum fluence during the treatment courses and the correlations between the passing rates and anatomical changes. Results: In PC, the median and lowest passing rates were 99.8% and 95.2%, respectively. No correlations between passing rates and interfractional variation were found. In HNC, the median passing rate of all fractions was 93.0%, and the lowest passing rate was 79.6% during the 35th fraction. Spearman’s correlation coefficients between the passing rates and changes in weight or neck volume were − 0.77 and − 0.74, respectively. Conclusions: Analyses of the on‐treatment EPID images facilitates estimates of the interfractional anatomical variation in HNC patients during VMAT and thus improves assessments of the need for re‐planning or adaptive strategies and the timing thereof

    Possible activation by the green tea amino acid theanine of mammalian target of rapamycin signaling in undifferentiated neural progenitor cells in vitro

    AbstractWe have shown marked promotion of both proliferation and neuronal differentiation in pluripotent P19 cells exposed to the green tea amino acid theanine, which is a good substrate for SLC38A1 responsible for glutamine transport. In this study, we evaluated the activity of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) kinase pathway, which participates in protein translation, cell growth and autophagy in a manner relevant to intracellular glutamine levels, in murine neural progenitor cells exposed to theanine. Exposure to theanine promoted the phosphorylation of mTOR and downstream proteins in neurospheres from embryonic mouse neocortex. Although stable overexpression of SLC38A1 similarly facilitated phosphorylation of mTOR-relevant proteins in undifferentiated P19 cells, theanine failed to additionally accelerate the increased phosphorylation in these stable transfectants. Theanine accelerated the formation of neurospheres from murine embryonic neocortex and adult hippocampus, along with facilitation of both 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine incorporation and 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide reduction in embryonic neurospheres. In embryonic neurospheres previously exposed to theanine, a significant increase was seen in the number of cells immunoreactive for a neuronal marker protein after spontaneous differentiation. These results suggest that theanine activates the mTOR signaling pathway for proliferation together with accelerated neurogenesis in murine undifferentiated neural progenitor cells
