Breaking the scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum in Horava-Lifshitz Cosmology

We study the spectral tilt of primordial perturbations in Horava-Lifshitz cosmology. The uniform approximation, which is a generalization of the familiar Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) method, is employed to compute the spectral index both numerically and analytically in a closed form. We clarify how the spectral index depends on the inflation model and parameters in the modified dispersion relation.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Window effect in the power spectrum analysis of a galaxy redshift survey

We investigate the effect of the window function on the multipole power spectrum in two different ways. First, we consider the convolved power spectrum including the window effect, which is obtained by following the familiar (FKP) method developed by Feldman, Kaiser and Peacock. We show how the convolved multipole power spectrum is related to the original power spectrum, using the multipole moments of the window function. Second, we investigate the deconvolved power spectrum, which is obtained by using the Fourier deconvolution theorem. In the second approach, we measure the multipole power spectrum deconvolved from the window effect. We demonstrate how to deal with the window effect in these two approaches, applying them to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, references adde

First-order quantum correction to the Larmor radiation from a moving charge in a spatially homogeneous time-dependent electric field

First-order quantum correction to the Larmor radiation is investigated on the basis of the scalar QED on a homogeneous background of time-dependent electric field, which is a generalization of a recent work by Higuchi and Walker so as to be extended for an accelerated charged particle in a relativistic motion. We obtain a simple approximate formula for the quantum correction in the limit of the relativistic motion when the direction of the particle motion is parallel to that of the electric field.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Production and Peripheral Roles of 5-HTP, a Precursor of Serotonin

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) has been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological functions. Multiple steps of enzyme reactions enable biosynthesis of 5-HT. The first and rate-limiting step of the reaction is the synthesis of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP) from L-tryptophan. This step is dictated by an enzyme, tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH). TPH requires 6R-L-erythro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) as a co-substrate of TPH. 5-HTP has been simply regarded as a precursor of 5-HT and it is believed that the biological significance of 5-HTP is essentially ascribed to the production of 5-HT. However, recent works shed light on the specific functions of 5-HTP in the periphery. In this review article, we focus on the specific roles of exogenous 5-HTP as well as the endogenous 5-HTP in the gut epithelial cells. Since systemic treatment with 5-HTP is applied to patients with lower 5-HT levels, the studies on the specific role of 5-HTP might create an opportunity to explore the effects of exogenously-applied 5-HTP in the gut in man

Overcoming Inferior External Environments in the Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology Industries via R&D Management (Japanese)

For firms to build up competitive advantage in business, the prevailing belief generally holds that in addition to positioning themselves in attractive industries expected to generate high profits, it is also important that they locate their bases in nations and regions which provide favorable external environments. Nevertheless, in reality there are many firms where these conditions are not met. This paper focuses on such companies, and considers ways to build up competitive advantage. In particular, this study suggests that it is important to establish an effective management in order to acquire and utilize management resources.
