GW calculation of plasmon excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional organic compound (TMTSF)2PF6

    Get PDF
We present an ab initio GW calculation to study dynamical effects on an organic compound (TMTSF)2 PF6. Calculated polarized reflectivities reproduce experimental plasma edges at around 0.2 eV for E∥b′ and 1.0 eV for E∥a. The low-energy plasmons come out from the low-energy narrow bands energetically isolated from other higher-energy bands, and affect the low-energy electronic structure via the GW-type self-energy. Because of the quasi-one-dimensional band structure, a distinct plasmaron state is observed along the Y-Γ line and a large plasmon-induced electron scattering is found in the low-energy occupied states along the X-M line

Coral Larvae under Ocean Acidification: Survival, Metabolism, and Metamorphosis

Ocean acidification may negatively impact the early life stages of some marine invertebrates including corals. Although reduced growth of juvenile corals in acidified seawater has been reported, coral larvae have been reported to demonstrate some level of tolerance to reduced pH. We hypothesize that the observed tolerance of coral larvae to low pH may be partly explained by reduced metabolic rates in acidified seawater because both calcifying and non-calcifying marine invertebrates could show metabolic depression under reduced pH in order to enhance their survival. In this study, after 3-d and 7-d exposure to three different pH levels (8.0, 7.6, and 7.3), we found that the oxygen consumption of Acropora digitifera larvae tended to be suppressed with reduced pH, although a statistically significant difference was not observed between pH conditions. Larval metamorphosis was also observed, confirming that successful recruitment is impaired when metamorphosis is disrupted, despite larval survival. Results also showed that the metamorphosis rate significantly decreased under acidified seawater conditions after both short (2 h) and long (7 d) term exposure. These results imply that acidified seawater impacts larval physiology, suggesting that suppressed metabolism and metamorphosis may alter the dispersal potential of larvae and subsequently reduce the resilience of coral communities in the near future as the ocean pH decreases

Optimization of capacitive coupled Low Gain Avalanche Diode (AC-LGAD) sensors for precise time and spatial resolution

Capacitive-coupled Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (AC-LGAD) sensors are being developed for high-energy particle physics experiments as a detector which provides fast time information with fine spatial resolution. This paper describes optimizations of AC-LGAD sensor fabrication parameters, such as doping concentrations of the gain and electrode layers as well as the AC insulator capacitance, to realize O\mathcal{O}(10)~\um{} spacial resolution, small charge cross talk to the neighboring electrodes, detection efficiency higher than 99\% at a 104^{-4} fake rate and time resolution of about 30~ps. The radiation tolerance of the sensor is presented. In addition, further application to a device capable of visible and infra-red light detection is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 25 figures, Submitted to Nuclear Instruments & Methods in physics research A (NIMA

Radiographic evaluation was performed on 18 patients with blunt renal trauma. Of 18 patients 11 had minor injury. Four of 11 patients with minor injury had a normal intravenous pyelogram (IVP), and other 7 were confirmed to have minor renal injury by computed tomographic (CT) scan. Seven patients had major injury. Six patients were diagnosed by both IVP and CT, and five by angiography. CT scan was reliable in major injury and had the high staging accuracy. Angiography was useful in specific patients. Therefore, we conclude that IVP or CT scan should be performed as the initial evaluation, and CT scan or angiography might be used as the second examination in selected patients

Modification of Cɛ mRNA Expression by EBV-Encoded Latent Membrane Protein 1

To evaluate the effect of expression of latent membrane protein (LMP) 1 encoded by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) on Cɛ mRNA expression, mRNA levels were examined by RT-PCR or Northern blot analysis upon transient transfection of LMP1 in the splenocytes derived from Brown-Norway rats with or without immunization with 2,4-dinitrophenyl-conjugated Ascaris suum antigen. Splenocytes were transfected with LMP1 expression vector, pSG5-LMP1, using lipofection method. Cɛ mRNA levels were considerably increased by transfection with pSG5-LMP1 in the splenocytes derived from the nonimmunized rats; however, Cɛ mRNA levels were decreased in the splenocytes derived from the immunized rats. Cɛ mRNA expression in IgE-producing cells are modulated by LMP1, which might depend on the differentiation status of B cells upon exposure to allergen
