    Re-Evaluating Internet Users’ Information Privacy Concerns: The Case in Japan

    To expand the understanding of privacy concerns in the digital sphere, this paper makes use of the Internet Users’ Information Privacy Concerns (IUIPC) model by Malhotra et al. (2004). The lack of empirical studies conducted in East-Asian societies makes it difficult, if not impossible, to shed light on multi-cultural differences in information privacy concerns of internet users. Therefore, we collected data of more than 9,000 Japanese respondents to conduct a conceptual replication of the IUIPC model. For our research goal, we re-assess the validity and reliability of the IUIPC model for Japan and compare the results with internet users\u27 privacy concerns in the USA. Our results indicate that the second-order IUIPC construct, measured reflectively through the constructs awareness, collection, and control, is reliable and valid. Furthermore, three out of the five structural paths of the IUIPC model were confirmed for our Japanese sample. In contrast to the original study, the impact of IUIPC on trusting beliefs, as well as that of trusting beliefs on risk beliefs was negligible. Statistically significant differences in the IUIPC could only be found for the covariate gender

    Open Materials Discourse: Re-Evaluating Internet Users’ Information Privacy Concerns: The Case in Japan

    This paper provides the survey materials used to collect the data for the conceptual replication of the Internet Users’ Information Privacy Concerns (IUIPC) model by Malhotra et al. (2004). The replication paper (Pape et al., 2020) used awareness, collection and control as constructs for the second order construct of IUIPC, as well as risk and trusting beliefs from the original paper. Instead of intended behavior the self-developed construct of willingness to share was used. Altogether more than 9,000 data points were collected. This paper provides additional materials and details on the participants, and the Japanese survey questions along with an English version for readers who are unfamiliar with Japanese. We hope that the additional information and in particular the Japanese questions provide some background on our study which will allow others a better understanding of our research and to make use of the questions themselves

    Analysis on the cryogenic stability and mechanical properties of the LHD helical coils

    Transient normal-transitions have been observed in the superconducting helical coils of LHD. Propagation of a normal-zone is analyzed with a numerical simulation code that deals with the magnetic diffusion process in a pure aluminum stabilizer. During excitation tests, a number of spike signals are observed in the balance voltage of the helical coils, which seem to be caused by mechanical disturbances. The spike signals are analyzed by applying pulse height analysis and the mechanical properties of the coil windings are investigated

    Voxel-based structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study of patients with early onset schizophrenia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Investigation into the whole brain morphology of early onset schizophrenia (EOS) to date has been sparse. We studied the regional brain volumes in EOS patients, and the correlations between regional volume measures and symptom severity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 18 EOS patients (onset under 16 years) and 18 controls matched for age, gender, parental socioeconomic status, and height were examined. Voxel-based morphometric analysis using the Brain Analysis Morphological Mapping (BAMM) software package was employed to explore alterations of the regional grey (GM) and white matter (WM) volumes in EOS patients. Symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>EOS patients had significantly reduced GM volume in the left parahippocampal, inferior frontal, and superior temporal gyri, compared with the controls. They also had less WM volume in the left posterior limb of the internal capsule and the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus. The positive symptom score of PANSS (higher values corresponding to more severe symptoms) was negatively related to GM volume in the bilateral posterior cingulate gyrus. The negative symptom score was positively correlated with GM volume in the right thalamus. As for the association with WM volume, the positive symptom score of PANSS was positively related to cerebellar WM (vermis region), and negatively correlated with WM in the brain stem (pons) and in the bilateral cerebellum (hemisphere region).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings of regional volume alterations of GM and WM in EOS patients coincide with those of previous studies of adult onset schizophrenia patients. However, in brain regions that had no overall structural differences between EOS patients and controls (that is, the bilateral posterior cingulate gyrus, the right thalamus, the cerebellum, and the pons), within-subject analysis of EOS patients alone revealed that there were significant associations of the volume in these areas and the symptom severity. These findings suggest that at an early stage of the illness, especially for those with onset before brain maturation, a wide range of disturbed neural circuits, including these brain regions that show no apparent morphological changes, may contribute to the formation of the symptomatology.</p

    Gut Microbiota of Healthy and Malnourished Children in Bangladesh

    Poor health and malnutrition in preschool children are longstanding problems in Bangladesh. Gut microbiota plays a tremendous role in nutrient absorption and determining the state of health. In this study, metagenomic tool was employed to assess the gut microbiota composition of healthy and malnourished children. DNA was extracted from fecal samples of seven healthy and seven malnourished children (n = 14; age 2–3 years) were analyzed for the variable region of 16S rRNA genes by universal primer PCR followed by high-throughput 454 parallel sequencing to identify the bacterial phyla and genera. Our results reveal that the healthy children had a significantly higher number of operational taxonomic unit in their gut than that of the malnourished children (healthy vs. malnourished: 546 vs. 310). In malnourished children, bacterial population of the phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes accounted for 46 and 18%, respectively. Conversely, in healthy children, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes accounted for 5% and 44, respectively (p < 0.001). In malnourished children, the phylum Proteobacteria included pathogenic genera, namely Klebsiella and Escherichia, which were 174-fold and 9-fold higher, respectively, than their healthy counterpart. The predominance of potentially pathogenic Proteobacteria and minimal level of Bacteroidetes as commensal microbiota might be associated to the ill health of malnourished children in Bangladesh

    Axon terminal hypertrophy of striatal projection neurons with levodopa-induced dyskinesia priming

    BackgroundA rat model of levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) showed enlarged axon terminals of striatal direct pathway neurons in the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) with excessive gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) storage in them. Massive GABA release to GPi upon levodopa administration determines the emergence of LID.ObjectivesWe examined whether LID and axon terminal hypertrophy gradually develop with repeated levodopa treatment in Parkinsonian rats to examine if the hypertrophy reflects dyskinesia priming.Methods6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned hemiparkinsonian rats were randomly allocated to receive saline injections (placebo group, 14 days; n = 4), injections of 6 mg/kg levodopa methyl ester combined with 12.5 mg/kg benserazide (levodopa-treated groups, 3-day-treatment; n = 4, 7-day-treatment; n = 4, 14-day-treatment; n = 4), or injections of 6 mg/kg levodopa methyl ester with 12.5 mg/kg benserazide and 1 mg/kg 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin for 14 days (8-OH-DPAT-treated group; n = 4). We evaluated abnormal involuntary movement (AIM) scores and axon terminals in the GPi.ResultsThe AIM score increased with levodopa treatment, as did the hypertrophy of axon terminals in the GPi, showing an increased number of synaptic vesicles in hypertrophied terminals.ConclusionIncreased GABA storage in axon terminals of the direct pathway neurons represents the priming process of LID

    Associations between Dietary Patterns, ADRβ2 Gln27Glu and ADRβ3 Trp64Arg with Regard to Serum Triglyceride Levels : J-MICC Study

    Interactions between dietary patterns and 2 β-adrenergic receptor (ADRβ) gene polymorphisms (ADRβ2 Gln27Glu and ADRβ3 Trp64Arg) were examined with regard to the effects on serum triglyceride levels. The cross-sectional study comprised 1720 men and women (aged 35–69 years) enrolled in the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort (J-MICC) Study. Genotyping was conducted using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction-based invader assay. We used 46 items from a validated short food frequency questionnaire and examined major dietary patterns by factor analysis. We identified four dietary patterns: healthy, Western, seafood and bread patterns. There was no significant association between any dietary pattern and serum triglyceride levels. After a separate genotype-based analysis, significant interactions between ADRβ3 Trp64Arg genotype and the bread pattern (p for interaction = 0.01) were associated with serum triglyceride levels; specifically, after adjusting for confounding factors, Arg allele carriers with the bread pattern had lower serum triglycerides (p for trend = 0.01). However, the Trp/Trp homozygous subjects with the bread pattern showed no association with serum triglycerides (p for trend = 0.55). Interactions between other dietary patterns and ADRβ polymorphisms were not significant for serum triglyceride levels. Our findings suggest that ADRβ3 polymorphism modifies the effects of the bread pattern on triglyceride levels
