    Functions of an unreported "rocking-embrace" gesture between female Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata) in Kinkazan Island, Japan.

    Recently, research has focused on the effects of the concurrence of multimodal signals and their efficacy and meaning. We observed an unreported behaviour, a ventro-ventral "rocking-embrace" gesture that is always accompanied by lip smacking as the facial expression and sometimes by a girney call, in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) living in Kinkazan Island, northern Japan. This study examined the form and contexts of the occurrence of such multimodal signals in order to elucidate its functions. Eighty-eight cases of rocking embrace were recorded during 183 h of observation over 22 days. Adult females were involved in all of the cases. Of the 71 cases between adult females in which behaviours prior to the rocking embrace could be identified, 13 cases were allogrooming interruptions, 11 were aggression, and 42 were approaches, most of which occurred between non-kin grooming partners. The rocking embrace was often followed by allogrooming. This suggests that rocking embraces occur under stressful conditions and may function to reduce tensions. This conclusion is consistent with the contexts and functions of lip smacking and girneys shown in previous studies. In contrast with lip smacking and girneys, neither a rocking embrace nor a ventro-ventral embrace (without rocking) between anoestrous adult females has been previously shown in Japanese macaques. In other macaque species, however, the latter gesture is often observed as an affiliative behaviour that immediately follows conflict; it functions to reconcile or as a greeting when it occurs immediately after an approach. Rocking embraces among the Kinkazan macaques occur in contexts similar to, and have a similar function to, the ancestral gesture of ventro-ventral embracing (which is hidden in Japanese macaques) and the ancestral display of lip smacking (which is still observed in Japanese macaques). The ventro-ventral embrace as a tactile signal might have been hidden since it was made redundant by the visual signal of lip smacking in ancestral macaques

    We report the detection of an H-alpha emission line in the low resolution spectrum of a quasar, RX J1759.4+6638, at a redshift of 4.3 with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) onboard the AKARI. This is the first spectroscopic detection of an H-alpha emission line in a quasar beyond z=4. The overall spectral energy distribution (SED) of RX J1759.4+6638 in the near- and mid-infrared wavelengths agrees with a median SED of the nearby quasars and the flux ratio of F(Ly-alpha)/F(H-alpha) is consistent with those of previous reports for lower-redshift quasars.Comment: 9pages, 3 figures, Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, in pres

    Antitumor effect after radiofrequency ablation of murine hepatoma is augmented by an active variant of CC chemokine ligand 3/macrophage inflammatory protein-1á

    金沢大学医薬保健研究域医学系Several chemokines are used for immunotherapy against cancers because they can attract immune cells such as dendritic and cytotoxic T cells to augment immune responses. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is used to locally eliminate cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), renal cell carcinoma, and lung cancer. Because HCC often recurs even after an eradicative treatment with RFA, additional immunotherapy is necessary. We treated tumor-bearing mice by administering ECI301, an active variant of CC chemokine ligand 3, after RFA. Mice were injected s.c. with BNL 1ME A.7R.1, a murine hepatoma cell line, in the bilateral flank. After the tumor became palpable, RFA was done on the tumor of one flank with or without ECI301. RFA alone eliminated the treated ipsilateral tumors and retarded the growth of contralateral non-RFA-treated tumors accompanied by massive T-cell infiltration. Injection of ECI301 augmented RFA-induced antitumor effect against non-RFA-treated tumors when administered to wild-type or CCR5-deficient but not CCR1-deficient mice. ECI301 also increased CCR1-expressing CD11c+ cells in peripheral blood and RFA-treated tumors after RFA. Deficiency of CCR1 impairs accumulation of CD11c+, CD4+, and CD8+ cells in RFA-treated tumors. Furthermore, in IFN-ã-enzyme-linked immunospot assay, ECI301 augmented tumor-specific responses after RFA whereas deficiency of CCR1 abolished this augmentation.     AKARI infrared imaging of reflection nebulae IC4954 and IC4955

    We present the observations of the reflection nebulae IC4954 and IC4955 region with the Infrared Camera (IRC) and the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) on board the infrared astronomical satellite AKARI during its performance verification phase. We obtained 7 band images from 7 to 160um with higher spatial resolution and higher sensitivities than previous observations. The mid-infrared color of the S9W (9um) and L18W (18um) bands shows a systematic variation around the exciting sources. The spatial variation in the mid-infrared color suggests that the star-formation in IC4954/4955 is progressing from south-west to north-east. The FIS data also clearly resolve two nebulae for the first time in the far-infrared. The FIS 4-band data from 65um to 160um allow us to correctly estimate the total infrared luminosity from the region, which is about one sixth of the energy emitted from the existing stellar sources. Five candidates for young stellar objects have been detected as point sources for the first time in the 11um image. They are located in the red S9W to L18W color regions, suggesting that current star-formation has been triggered by previous star-formation activities. A wide area map of the size of about 1 x 1 (deg^2) around the IC4954/4955 region was created from the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey data. Together with the HI 21cm data, it suggests a large hollow structure of a degree scale, on whose edge the IC4954/4955 region has been created, indicating star formation over three generations in largely different spatial scales.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ AKARI special issu

    Met Kinase Inhibitor E7050 Reverses Three Different Mechanisms of Hepatocyte Growth Factor-induced Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Resistance in EGFR Mutant Lung Cancer

    PURPOSE: Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) induces resistance to reversible and irreversible epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) in EGFR mutant lung cancer cells by activating Met and the downstream PI3K/Akt pathway. Moreover, continuous exposure to HGF accelerates the emergence of EGFR-TKI-resistant clones. We assayed whether a new Met kinase inhibitor, E7050, which is currently being evaluated in clinical trials, could overcome these three mechanisms of resistance to EGFR-TKIs. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: The effects of E7050 on HGF-induced resistance to reversible (gefitinib), irreversible (BIBW2992), and mutant-selective (WZ4002) EGFR-TKIs were determined using the EGFR-mutant human lung cancer cell lines PC-9 and HCC827 with an exon 19 deletion, and H1975 with an T790M secondary mutation. PC-9 cells were mixed with HGF-producing fibroblasts, MRC-5 cells, and subcutaneously inoculated into SCID mice and the therapeutic effects of E7050 plus gefitinib were assayed. RESULTS: E7050 circumvented resistance to all of the reversible, irreversible, and mutant-selective EGFR-TKIs induced by exogenous and/or endogenous HGF in EGFR mutant lung cancer cell lines, by blocking the Met/Gab1/PI3K/Akt pathway in vitro. E7050 also prevented the emergence of gefitinib-resistant HCC827 cells induced by continuous exposure to HGF. In the in vivo model, E7050 plus gefitinib resulted in marked regression of tumor growth associated with inhibition of Akt phosphorylation in cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS: A new Met kinase inhibitor, E7050, reverses the three HGF-induced mechanisms of gefitinib resistance, suggesting that E7050 may overcome HGF-induced resistance to gefitinib and next-generation EGFR-TKIs

    Nature of Infrared Sources in 11 micron Selected Sample from Early Data of the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole Deep Survey

    We present the properties of 11 μ\mum selected sources detected in the early data of the North Ecliptic Pole Deep (NEP-Deep) Survey of AKARI. The data set covers 6 wavelength bands from 2.5 to 11 μ\mum, with the exposure time of 10 ~ 20 minutes. This field lies within the CFHT survey with four filter bands (g,r,i,z),enablingustoestablishnearlycontinuousspectralenergydistributions(SEDs)forwavelengthsrangingfrom0.4to11g', r', i',z'), enabling us to establish nearly continuous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for wavelengths ranging from 0.4 to 11 \mum.Themainsamplestudiedhereconsistsof71sourceswhose11m. The main sample studied here consists of 71 sources whose 11 \mumABmagnitudesareequaltoorbrighterthan18.5(251m AB magnitudes are equal to or brighter than 18.5 (251 \muJy),whichiscompletetomorethan90Jy), which is complete to more than 90%. The 11 \mumbandhasanadvantageofsamplingstarforminggalaxieswithlowtomediumredshiftssincetheprominentPAHfeatureshiftsintothisband.Asexpected,wefindthatthemajority( 68m band has an advantage of sampling star forming galaxies with low to medium redshifts since the prominent PAH feature shifts into this band. As expected, we find that the majority (~68%) of 11 \mumbrightsourcesarestarforminggalaxiesat0.2<z<0.7withm bright sources are star forming galaxies at 0.2 < z < 0.7 with L_{IR} ~ 10^{10} -- 10^{12} L_{\odot}$ based on the detailed modelling of SEDs. We also find four AGNs lying at various redshifts in the main sample. In addition, we discuss a few sources which have non-typical SEDs of the main sample, including a brown dwarf candidate, a steep power-law source, flat spectrum object, and an early-type galaxy at moderate redshift.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure

    The Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) for the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE): Mission, science, and instrumentation of its receiver modules

    The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is a science mission led by the European Space Agency, being developed for launch in 2023. The Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) is an instrument onboard JUICE, whose main scientific goals are to understand ice tectonics based on topographic data, the subsurface structure by measuring tidal response, and small-scale roughness and albedo of the surface. In addition, from the perspective of astrobiology, it is imperative to study the subsurface ocean scientifically. The development of GALA has proceeded through an international collaboration between Germany (the lead), Japan, Switzerland, and Spain. Within this framework, the Japanese team (GALA-J) is responsible for developing three receiver modules: the Backend Optics (BEO), the Focal Plane Assembly (FPA), and the Analog Electronics Module (AEM). Like the German team, GALA-J also developed software to simulate the performance of the entire GALA system (performance model). In July 2020, the Proto-Flight Models of BEO, FPA, and AEM were delivered from Japan to Germany.
