    Predictive haemodynamics in a one-dimensional human carotid artery bifurcation. Part II: application to graft design

    A Bayesian surrogate modelling technique is proposed that may be able to predict an optimal bypass graft configuration for patients suffering with stenosis in the internal carotid artery (ICA). At the outset, this statistical technique is considered as a means for identifying key geometric parameters influencing haemodynamics in the human carotid bifurcation. This methodology uses a design of experiments (DoE) technique to generate candidate geometries for flow analysis. A pulsatile one dimensional Navier-Stokes solver incorporating fluid-wall interactions for a Newtonian fluid which predicts pressure and flow in the carotid bifurcation (comprising a stenosed segment in the internal carotid artery) is used for the numerical simulations. Two metrics, pressure variation factor (PVF) and maximum pressure (pm) are employed to directly compare the global and local effects, respectively, of variations in the geometry. The values of PVF and pm are then used to construct two Bayesian surrogate models. These models are statistically analysed to visualise how each geometric parameter influences PVF and pm. Percentage of stenosis is found to influence these pressure based metrics more than any other geometric parameter. Later, we identify bypass grafts with optimal geometric and material properties which have low values of PVF on five test cases with 70%, 75%, 80%, 85% and 90% stenosis in the ICA, respectively

    Ion beam induced enhanced diffusion from gold thin films in silicon

    Enhanced diffusion of gold atoms into silicon substrate has been studied in Au thin films of various thicknesses (2.0, 5.3, 10.9 and 27.5 nm) deposited on Si(111) and followed by irradiation with 1.5 MeV Au2+ at a flux of 6.3x10^12 ions cm-2 s-1 and fluence up to 1x10^15 ions cm-2. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements showed the presence of gold silicide formation for the above-mentioned systems at fluence greater than equal to 1x1014 ions cm-2. The maximum depth to which the gold atoms have been diffused at a fluence of 1x10^14 ions cm-2 for the cases of 2.0, 5.3, 10.9 and 27.5 nm thick films has been found to be 60, 95, 160 and 13 nm respectively. Interestingly, at higher fluence of 1x1015 ions cm-2 in case of 27.5 nm thick film, gold atoms from the film transported to a maximum depth of 265 nm in the substrate. The substrate silicon is found to be amorphous at the above fluence values where unusually large mass transport occurred. Enhanced diffusion has been explained on the basis of ion beam induced, flux dependent amorphous nature of the substrate, and transient beam induced temperature effects. This work confirms the absence of confinement effects that arise from spatially confined structures and existence of thermal and chemical reactions during ion irradiation.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Flux dependent 1.5 MeV self-ion beam induced sputtering from Gold nanostructured thin films

    We discuss four important aspects of 1.5 MeV Au2+ ion-induced flux dependent sputtering from gold nanostrcutures (of an average size 7.6 nm and height 6.9 nm) that are deposited on silicon substrates: (a) Au sputtering yield at the ion flux of 6.3x10^12 ions cm-2 s-1 is found to be 312 atoms/ion which is about five times the sputtering yield reported earlier under identical irradiation conditions at a lower beam flux of 10^9 ions cm-2 s-1, (b) the sputtered yield increases with increasing flux at lower fluence and reduces at higher fluence (1.0x10^15 ions cm-2) for nanostructured thin films while the sputtering yield increases with increasing flux and fluence for thick films (27.5 nm Au deposited on Si) (c) Size distribution of sputtered particles has been found to vary with the incident beam flux showing a bimodal distribution at higher flux and (d) the decay exponent obtained from the size distributions of sputtered particles showed an inverse power law dependence ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 as a function of incident beam flux. The exponent values have been compared with existing theoretical models to understand the underlying mechanism. The role of wafer temperature associated with the beam flux has been invoked for a qualitative understanding of the sputtering results in both the nanostructured thin films and thick films.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, 1 table To be Appeared in J.     The mechanism of nestmate discrimination in the tropical social wasp Ropalidia marginata and its implications for the evolution of sociality

    We have demonstrated that females of the primitively eusocial tropical wasp Ropalidia marginata can discriminate nestmates from nonnestmates outside the context of their nests. This was accomplished by recroding all behavioural interactions in a neutral arena and comparing tolerance levels. In order for these wasps to make such a discrimination, however, it was essential that after eclosion both the discriminated and the discriminating animals were exposed to their respective natal nests and nestmates. The results suggest that both recognition labels and templates are acquired by the animals from sources outside their body, perhaps from their nest or nestmates. It is thus unlikely that different genetic lines within a colony can be distinguished. We conclude, therefore, that genetic asymmetries created by haplodiploidy, but often broken down by multiple mating and polygyny, are not restored by preferential altruism towards full rather than half sisters by means of kin recognition. Hence we recommend caution in ascribing the multiple origins of eusociality in the Hymenoptera to haplodiploidy

    Soil Carbon in Agroforestry Systems: An Unexplored Treasure?

    Soil organic matter (SOM), which contains more reactive organic carbon (C) than any other single terrestrial pool, plays a major role in determining C storage in ecosystems and regulating atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2)^1^. Agroforestry, the practice of growing trees and crops in interacting combinations on the same unit of land^2^, primarily by resource-poor smallholder farmers in developing countries, is recognized as a strategy for soil carbon sequestration (SCS) under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol^3^. The understanding about C storage and dynamics under agroforestry systems (AFS), however, is minimal. Our studies under various AFS in diverse ecological conditions in five countries showed that tree-based agricultural systems, compared to treeless systems, stored more C in deeper soil layers up to 1 m depth under comparable conditions. More C is stored in soil near the tree than away from the tree; higher SOC content is associated with higher species richness and tree density; and C3 plants (trees) contribute to more C in the silt- + clay-sized (&#x3c;53 &#xb5;m) fractions that constitute more stable C, than C4 plants, in deeper soil profiles4 - 8. These results provide clear indications of the possibilities for climate change mitigation through SCS in AFS, and opportunities for economic benefit - through carbon trading - to millions of smallholder farmers in developing countries
