Plantas que atraem aves e outros bichos

O livro é desdobramento de um projeto sobre as aves do Jardim Botânico do Instituto de Biociências da Unesp, em Botucatu, São Paulo, realizado entre 2010 e 2013 e durante o qual foi produzido um amplo registro fotográfico do comportamento alimentar de aves e de outros animais que frequentam o local, assim como da relação dos animais com a rica e variada vegetação ali existente. Com base neste acervo de fotos das aves se alimentando, os pesquisadores selecionaram uma lista de plantas que o público em geral poderia se interessar em cultivar em jardins e quintais. A intenção é também a de estimular instituições públicas e empresas privadas a incluírem, em seus projetos de paisagismo, espécies de plantas nativas que atraem aves, de modo a ajudar a combater o franco processo de degradação dos ambientes naturais brasileiros. Ricamente ilustrado, o livro traz informações sobre as características gerais das plantas, a altura que podem elas atingir, os períodos de floração ou frutificação e as aves e outros animais que se alimentam delas. Niche partitioning and coexistence of two spiders of the genus Peucetia (Araneae, Oxyopidae) inhabiting Trichogoniopsis adenantha plants (Asterales, Asteraceae).

Niche theory suggests that the coexistence of ecologically similar species in the same site requires some form of resource partitioning that reduces or avoids interspecific competition. Here, from July 2013 to December 2015, we investigated spatial niche differentiation at three different scales of two sympatric congeneric spiders, Peucetia rubrolineata and P. flava, along an altitudinal gradient in shaded and open areas in an Atlantic forest in Serra do Japi, SP, Brazil. These spiders are peculiar in that they present an exclusive association with the plant Trichogoniopsis adenantha (Asteraceae). In theory, the coexistence of two Peucetia species could be explained by: (1) microhabitat segregation with individuals from different species occupying different parts of the same plants; (2) mesohabitat segregation with different species using plant in different environments; (3) macrohabitat segregation, where different species would not co-occur along the altitudinal gradient. With respect to micro-habitat use, in both species, different instars used different plant parts, while the same instars of both species used the same type of substrate. However, the two Peucetia species segregated by meso-habitat type, with P. rubrolineata preferring T. adenantha plants in shaded areas and P. flava preferring those in open areas. Our results support the hypothesis of niche partitioning begetting diversity, and highlight the importance of analyzing habitat use at multiple scales to understand mechanisms related to coexistence

Diversidade de aves do Jardim Botânico do Instituto de Biociências: projeto de extensão articulando pesquisa, ensino e extensão

The extension project "What animals live in the Botanical Garden of the Institute of Biosciences?" Has been operating since 2012, providing for public schools visits of Botucatu and region and producing various types of teaching materials on the biology of birds from the research material. The project has produced books, classroom and digital photographic exhibitions, educational website and various pedagogical objects to enrich the educational visits and motivate students. We report all the activities, the experience of the stock market and the next steps of the project.O projeto de extensão “Que bichos moram no Jardim Botânico?” atua desde 2012, provendo visitas de escolas publicas de Botucatu e região e produzindo vários tipos de materiais didáticos sobre a Biologia da aves a partir do material de pesquisa. O Projeto já produziu livros, exposições fotográficas presenciais e digitais, site educativo e vários objetos pedagógicos para enriquecer as visitas didáticas e motivar os alunos.
