    Interplay of fixed points in scalar models

    We performed the renormalization group analysis of scalar models exhibiting spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is shown that an infrared fixed point appears in the broken symmetric phase of the models, which induces a dynamical scale, that can be identified with the correlation length. This enables one to identify the type of the phase transition which shows similarity to the one appearing in the crossover scale. The critical exponent ν\nu of the correlation length also proved to be equal in the crossover and the infrared scaling regimes.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Numerical integration of one-loop Feynman diagrams for N-photon amplitudes

    In the calculation of cross sections for infrared-safe observables in high energy collisions at next-to-leading order, one approach is to perform all of the integrations, including the virtual loop integration numerically. One would use a subtraction scheme that removes infrared and collinear divergences from the integrand in a style similar to that used for real emission graphs. Then one would perform the loop integration by Monte Carlo integration along with the integrations over final state momenta. In this paper, we have explored how one can perform the numerical integration. We have studied the N-photon scattering amplitude with a massless electron loop in order to have a case with a singular integrand that is not, however, so singular as to require the subtractions. We report results for N = 4, N = 5 with left-handed couplings, and N=6.Comment: 30 pages including 5 figures. This is a revised version that is close to the published versio

    We present the perturbative prediction for three-jet production cross section in DIS at the NLO accuracy. We study the dependence on the renormalization and factorization scales of exclusive three-jet cross section. The perturbative prediction for the three-jet differential distribution as a function of the momentum transfer is compared to the corresponding data obtained by the H1 collaboration at HERA.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Three-jet cross sections in hadron-hadron collisions at next-to-leading order

    We present a new QCD event generator for hadron collider which can calculate one-, two- and three-jet cross sections at next-to-leading order accuracy. In this letter we study the transverse energy spectrum of three-jet hadronic events using the kT algorithm. We show that the next-to-leading order correction significantly reduces the renormalization and factorization scale dependence of the three-jet cross section.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, REVTEX

    A causal statistical family of dissipative divergence type fluids

    In this paper we investigate some properties, including causality, of a particular class of relativistic dissipative fluid theories of divergence type. This set is defined as those theories coming from a statistical description of matter, in the sense that the three tensor fields appearing in the theory can be expressed as the three first momenta of a suitable distribution function. In this set of theories the causality condition for the resulting system of hyperbolic partial differential equations is very simple and allow to identify a subclass of manifestly causal theories, which are so for all states outside equilibrium for which the theory preserves this statistical interpretation condition. This subclass includes the usual equilibrium distributions, namely Boltzmann, Bose or Fermi distributions, according to the statistics used, suitably generalized outside equilibrium. Therefore this gives a simple proof that they are causal in a neighborhood of equilibrium. We also find a bigger set of dissipative divergence type theories which are only pseudo-statistical, in the sense that the third rank tensor of the fluid theory has the symmetry and trace properties of a third momentum of an statistical distribution, but the energy-momentum tensor, while having the form of a second momentum distribution, it is so for a different distribution function. This set also contains a subclass (including the one already mentioned) of manifestly causal theories.Comment: LaTex, documentstyle{article

    Local demands on sterile neutrinos

    In a model independent manner, we explore the local implications of a single neutrino oscillation measurement which cannot be reconciled within a three-neutrino theory. We examine this inconsistency for a single region of baseline to neutrino energy L/EL/E. Assuming that sterile neutrinos account for the anomaly, we find that the {\it local} demands of this datum can require the addition to the theory of one to three sterile neutrinos. We examine the constraints which can be used to determine when more than one neutrino would be required. The results apply only to a given region of L/EL/E. The question of the adequacy of the sterile neutrinos to satisfy a global analysis is not addressed here. Finally, using the results of a 3+2 analysis, we indicate values for unknown mixing matrix elements which would require two sterile neutrinos due to local demands only.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, discussion adde
