Occurrence of Pseudorhadinorhynchus leuciscus (Acanthocephala: Illiosentidae) in big-scaled redfin, Tribolodon hakonensis, in coastal marine waters of Hokkaido, northern Japan

The illiosentid acanthocephalan Pseudorhadinorhynchus leuciscus (Krotov & Petrochenko, 1956) was collected from the intestine of big-scaled redfin, Tribolodon hakonensis (Günther, 1877), at four sites in coastal marine waters of Hokkaido, northern Japan. These collections indicate that this acanthocephalan is an intestinal parasite of T. hakonensis inhabiting the coastal marine waters. The host fish is known to consist of two ecologically different, river-resident and anadromous, individuals. We suggest a practical use of P. leuciscus as a biological tag to identify the anadromous individuals of T. hakonensis that migrate from the sea to and stay in rivers during their spawning period

Spontaneous Subcutaneous Sarcoma in a 50-week-old Male Wistar Hannover GALAS Rat

A subcutaneous mass was noted in the abdomen of a 50-week-old male Wistar Hannover GALAS rat. Histologically, the tumor was composed of vimentin-positive small round cells with scant cytoplasm arranged in a trabecular, sheet or pericytoma-like pattern and spindle cells arranged in a bundle pattern and vimentin-negative round cells proliferating in an island-shaped pattern. Argentophilic thin fibers were observed to wrap up the individual cells, and some of the tumor cells showed coexpression of vimentin and cytokeratin that formed juxtanuclear globes in the cytoplasm by double immunohistostaining. Transmission electron microscopy did not reveal any characteristic features suggesting cellular differention toward a specific cell type. Based on these findings, it was difficult to specify the origin, and the tumor was diagnosed as a poorly differentiated mesenchymal tumor and classified as a sarcoma, NOS (not otherwise specified)

The relationship between auditory ERP and neuropsychological assessments in schizophrenia

金沢大学附属病院To clarify the cognitive significance of event-related potential (ERP) abnormalities in schizophrenia, we examined the relationships of amplitudes and latencies of ERP components with performance on neuropsychological tests in schizophrenic patients. Twenty patients underwent the Trail Making B Test (TM-B), which is sensitive to frontal lobe dysfunction, and the logical memory, verbal paired-association, and visual reproduction subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), which are sensitive to temporal lobe dysfunctions, and ERP recordings during performance of an oddball auditory discrimination task. Pearson product–moment correlations indicated that an increased P200 amplitude was correlated with poor performance on the TM-B, whereas a decreased P300 amplitude was correlated with poor performance on the verbal paired-association subtest of the WMS. These findings suggest that a P200 abnormality represents the frontal lobe dysfunction, and a P300 abnormality represents the left temporal lobe dysfunction in schizophrenia

Many consultations with students suffering from aberrant eating behaviors and those worried about their weight are provided at campus mental health clinics. The number of university students who are at high risk for anorexia and are to thought to be potential candidates for an eating disorder is increasing, likely because it is often difficult for university students to adapt to student life. To improve the prevention and early detection of eating disorders, we assessed the change in body mass index (BMI) and prevalence of eating attitudes and depressive symptoms as determined by a questionnaire at health checkups for university students. There were not too many students whose weight had changed greatly at the 4th year health checkup as compared with that at their initial checkup on entering school. It is important to instruct students in whom changes in weight are recognized at periodic health checkups
