The aim of this work was to examine the fate of defined nonylphenol-isomers in activated sewage sludge. This was performed with the use of 14C-marked isomers which could directly compared to each other . Moreover the behavior of NP-solutions in water were analysed relating to absorption. As a result silicone caoutchouc was a very good adsorbent material for NP. In cooperation with Magnus Mergler a new method for the determination of the xenoestrogens 4-nonylphenol and bisphenol A by high-performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection after derivatisation with dansyl chloride was developed. The balance of the biodegradation in activated sewage sludge of the two NP-Isomers [14C(U)]-4-(3‘,5‘-Dimethyl-3‘-heptyl)phenol and [14C(U)]-4-n-NP in semi-closed systems was determined. In this experiments the Isomer with the linear alkyl side chain was degraded aproximately ten times faster than the branched isomer. Additional great diffrences of the rate of mineralization and the concentration-time-profiles of special fractions were shown. After the development of special analysation methods the degradation of the isomers of technically nonylphenol was examined. As a result all isomer groups had diffrent degradation rates. A good biodegradation for isomers with alpha-dimethyl-configuration and a slow biodegradation for isomers with alpha-methyl-, alpha-propyl-configuration were shown
