Expression and Function of Osteopontin in Vascular Adventitial Fibroblasts and Pathological Vascular Remodeling
Osteopontin is known to play important roles in various diseases including vascular disorders. However, little is known about its expression and function in vascular adventitial fibroblasts. Adventitial fibroblasts have been shown to play a key role in pathological vascular remodeling associating with various vascular disorders. In this study, we measured activation of Osteopontin and its biological functions in cultured adventitial fibroblasts and injured rat carotid injury arteries induced by balloon angioplasty. Our results showed that angiotensin II and aldosterone increased Osteopontin expression in adventitial fibroblasts in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. MAPKs and AP-1 pathways were involved in Osteopontin upregulation. In addition, Adventitial fibroblast migration stimulated by Angiotensin II and aldosterone required OPN expression. Perivascular delivery of antisense oligonucleotide for Osteopontin suppressed neointimal formation post-injury. We concluded that upregulation of Osteopontin expression in adventitial fibroblasts might be important in the pathogenesis of vascular remodeling after arterial injury
Electron Energy Loss and One- and Two-Photon Excited SERS Probing of “Hot” Plasmonic Silver Nanoaggregates
We report electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and one- and two-photon excited surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and hyper Raman studies on plasmonic silver nanoaggregates. By comparison with computations, EELS imaging reveals an inverse relationship between local field intensity in an optical experiment and electron energy loss intensity at energies corresponding to excitation wavelengths used for optical probing. This inverse relation exists independent on specific nanoaggregate geometries and is mainly controlled by the gap size between the particles forming the aggregate. The ratio between two- and one-photon excited SERS measured at different excitation wavelengths provides information about local fields in the hottest spots and their dependence on the photon energy. Our data verify experimentally the predicted increase of local optical fields in the hot spots with increasing wave lengths. The reported findings show new experimental ways to characterize local fields of plasmonic nanostructures. This is of particular importance for complex structures which are not easily approachable by computations
Radiology in pleural disease: state of the art.
Diseases of the pleura and pleural space are common and present a significant contribution to the workload of the chest radiologist. The radiology department plays a crucial role in the imaging and management of pleural disease. This review aims to describe and illustrate the appearances of common pleural pathologies on various radiological modalities including plain film, ultrasound, CT, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. The review will also address the state-of-the-art techniques used to image pleural disease and discuss image-guided intervention in the management of pleural disease
