Optical doping and damage formation in AIN by Eu implantation
AlN films grown on sapphire were implanted with 300 keV Eu ions to fluences from 3×1014 to 1.4×1017 atoms/cm2 in two different geometries: “channeled” along the c-axis and “random” with a 10° angle between the ion beam and the surface normal. A detailed study of implantation damage accumulation is presented. Strong ion channeling effects are observed leading to significantly decreased damage levels for the channeled implantation within the entire fluence range. For random implantation, a buried amorphous layer is formed at the highest fluences. Red Eu-related photoluminescence at room temperature is observed in all samples with highest intensities for low damage samples (low fluence and channeled implantation) after annealing. Gauging the SU(2) Skyrme model
In this paper the SU(2) Skyrme model will be reformulated as a gauge theory
and the hidden symmetry will be investigated and explored in the energy
spectrum computation. To this end we purpose a new constraint conversion
scheme, based on the symplectic framework with the introduction of Wess-Zumino
(WZ) terms in an unambiguous way. It is a positive feature not present on the
BFFT constraint conversion. The Dirac's procedure for the first-class
constraints is employed to quantize this gauge invariant nonlinear system and
the energy spectrum is computed. The finding out shows the power of the
symplectic gauge-invariant formalism when compared with another constraint
conversion procedures present on the literature.Comment: revised version, to appear in Phys.Rev.
Radiomics to better characterize small renal masses
Purpose:
Radiomics is a specific field of medical research that uses programmable recognition tools to extract objective information from standard images to combine with clinical data, with the aim of improving diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive accuracy beyond standard visual interpretation. We performed a narrative review of radiomic applications that may support improved characterization of small renal masses (SRM). The main focus of the review was to identify and discuss methods which may accurately differentiate benign from malignant renal masses, specifically between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtypes and from angiomyolipoma without visible fat (fat-poor AML) and oncocytoma. Furthermore, prediction of grade, sarcomatoid features, and gene mutations would be of importance in terms of potential clinical utility in prognostic stratification and selecting personalised patient management strategies. /
Methods:
A detailed search of original articles was performed using the PubMed–MEDLINE database until 20 September 2020 to identify the English literature relevant to radiomics applications in renal tumour assessment. In total, 42 articles were included in the analysis in 3 main categories related to SRM: prediction of benign versus malignant SRM, subtypes, and nuclear grade, and other features of aggressiveness. /
Conclusion:
Overall, studies reported the superiority of radiomics over expert radiological assessment, but were mainly of retrospective design and therefore of low-quality evidence. However, it is clear that radiomics is an attractive modality that has the potential to improve the non-invasive diagnostic accuracy of SRM imaging and prediction of its natural behaviour. Further prospective validation studies of radiomics are needed to augment management algorithms of SRM
Interference and complementarity for two-photon hybrid entangled states
In this work we generate two-photon hybrid entangled states (HES), where the
polarization of one photon is entangled with the transverse spatial degree of
freedom of the second photon. The photon pair is created by parametric
down-conversion in a polarization-entangled state. A birefringent double-slit
couples the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of these photons and
finally, suitable spatial and polarization projections generate the HES. We
investigate some interesting aspects of the two-photon hybrid interference, and
present this study in the context of the complementarity relation that exists
between the visibilities of the one- and two-photon interference patterns.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Accepted in Physical Review
O Hospital e o Adolescente Uma Visão Num Hospital Pediátrico
Com o objectivo de conhecer as opiniões e expectativas dos adolescentes acerca das condições de atendimento hospitalar, os autores aplicaram um auto-questionário, de resposta facultativa e anónima, aos utentes desse grupo etário em Março de 1995. Obtiveram-se 207 respostas no ambulatório e 33 no internamento; apenas 17% frequentavam a consulta pela primeira vez e, 26% utilizavam-na há mais de 5 anos; 64% dos inquiridos já tinham internamentos anteriores dos quais 78% neste hospital. Em caso de necessidade de internamento 59% preferia o hospital pediátrico e, 56,5% gostaria de uma consulta específica para o seu grupo etário. Quanto às condições de internamento 88,8% desejava ter apenas jovens da sua idade na enfermaria e, sublinham a importância da sua privacidade.
Concluem pela necessidade de melhorar as condições de atendimento e internamento e promover a discussão sobre o funcionamento de unidades hospitalares para adolescentes
Co‐existing monophasic teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a female dog
Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma,composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females.
This report describes case of co-existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10-year old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge.
Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra and a mass in the left ovary. This was composed of
a uniform whitish tissue with multiple cystic structures. The histology revealed an atrophy of the ovarian parenchyma, compressed by a proliferation of well-differentiated nervous tissue staining positively to vimentin, S100 and neuronal specific enolase (NSE), and negatively to keratin and inhibin. The left uterine horn, whose diameter was markedly increased, showed foci of endometrial cellular atypia, evident nucleoli and mitoses, at light microscopy.

Functionalizing self-assembled GaN quantum dot superlattices by Eu-implantation
Self-assembled GaN quantum dots (QDs) stacked in superlattices (SL) with AlN spacer layers were implanted with Europium ions to fluences of 1013, 1014, and 1015 cm−2. The damage level introduced in the QDs by the implantation stays well below that of thick GaN epilayers. For the lowest fluence, the structural properties remain unchanged after implantation and annealing while for higher fluences the implantation damage causes an expansion of the SL in the [0001] direction which increases with implantation fluence and is only partly reversed after thermal annealing at 1000 °C. Nevertheless, in all cases, the SL quality remains very good after implantation and annealing with Eu ions incorporated preferentially into near-substitutional cation sites. Eu3+ optical activation is achieved after annealing in all samples. In the sample implanted with the lowest fluence, the Eu3+ emission arises mainly from Eu incorporated inside the QDs while for the higher fluences only the emission from Eu inside the AlN-buffer, capping, and spacer layers is observed.
