Solutions of the Polchinski ERG equation in the O(N) scalar model
Solutions of the Polchinski exact renormalization group equation in the
scalar O(N) theory are studied. Families of regular solutions are found and
their relation with fixed points of the theory is established. Special
attention is devoted to the limit , where many properties can be

Generation of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum entangled states
Hybrid entangled states exhibit entanglement between different degrees of
freedom of a particle pair and thus could be useful for asymmetric optical
quantum network where the communication channels are characterized by different
properties. We report the first experimental realization of hybrid
polarization-orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states by adopting a
spontaneous parametric down conversion source of polarization entangled states
and a polarization-OAM transferrer. The generated quantum states have been
characterized through quantum state tomography. Finally, the violation of
Bell's inequalities with the hybrid two photon system has been observed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Insulin glycation by methylglyoxal results in native-like aggregation and inhibition of fibril formation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose homeostasis and is a central protein in a medical condition termed insulin injection amyloidosis. It is intimately associated with glycaemia and is vulnerable to glycation by glucose and other highly reactive carbonyls like methylglyoxal, especially in diabetic conditions. Protein glycation is involved in structure and stability changes that impair protein functionality, and is associated with several human diseases, such as diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Familiar Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy. In the present work, methylglyoxal was investigated for their effects on the structure, stability and fibril formation of insulin.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Methylglyoxal was found to induce the formation of insulin native-like aggregates and reduce protein fibrillation by blocking the formation of the seeding <it>nuclei</it>. Equilibrium-unfolding experiments using chaotropic agents showed that glycated insulin has a small conformational stability and a weaker dependence on denaturant concentration (smaller m-value). Our observations suggest that methylglyoxal modification of insulin leads to a less compact and less stable structure that may be associated to an increased protein dynamics.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We propose that higher dynamics in glycated insulin could prevent the formation of the rigid cross-β core structure found in amyloid fibrils, thereby contributing to the reduction in the ability to form fibrils and to the population of different aggregation pathways like the formation of native-like aggregates.</p
Violation of a Bell inequality in two-dimensional spin-orbit hypoentangled subspaces
Based on spin-orbit coupling induced by q-plates, we present a feasible
experimental proposal for preparing two-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous
polarizations of light. We further investigate the quantum correlations between
these inhomogeneous polarizations of photon pairs generated by spontaneous
parametric down-conversion, which in essence describe the so-called
hypoentanglement that is established between composite spin-orbit variables of
photons. The violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt-Bell inequality is
predicted with S=2\sqrt2 to illustrate the entangled nature of the cylindrical

Crystal structure of mannose specific IIA subunit of phosphotransferase system from Streptococcus pneumoniae
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a frequent bacterial pathogen of the human respiratory tract causing pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis, a serious healthcare burden in all age groups. S. pneumoniae lacks complete respiratory chain and relies on carbohydrate fermentation for energy generation. One of the essential components for this includes the mannose phosphotransferase system (Man-PTS), which plays a central role in glucose transport and exhibits a broad specificity for a range of hexoses. Importantly, Man-PTS is involved in the global regulation of gene expression for virulence determinants. We herein report the three-dimensional structure of the EIIA domain of S. pneumoniae mannose phosphotransferase system (SpEIIA-Man). Our structure shows a dimeric arrangement of EIIA and reveals a detailed molecular description of the active site. Since PTS transporters are exclusively present in microbes and sugar transporters have already been suggested as valid targets for antistreptococcal antibiotics, our work sets foundation for the future development of antimicrobial strategies against Streptococcus pneumoniae.ISSN:1420-304
Electrospun nanosized cellulose fibers using ionic liquids at room temperature
Aiming at replacing the noxious solvents commonly employed, ionic-liquid-based solvents have been recently explored as novel non-volatile and non-flammable media for the electrospinning of polymers. In this work, nanosized and biodegradable cellulose fibers were obtained by electrospinning at room temperature using a pure ionic liquid or a binary mixture of two selected ionic liquids. The electrospinning of 8 wt% cellulose in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate medium (a low viscosity and room temperature ionic liquid capable of efficiently dissolving cellulose) showed to produce electrospun fibers with average diameters within (470 ± 110) nm. With the goal of tailoring the surface tension of the spinning dope, a surface active ionic liquid was further added in a 0.10 : 0.90 mole fraction ratio. Electrospun cellulose fibers from the binary mixture composed of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids presented average diameters within (120 ± 55) nm. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric assays were used as core methods to evaluate the structural integrity, morphology and crystallinity of the raw, electrospun, and regenerated samples of cellulose. Moreover, the photoluminescence spectra of both raw and electrospun fibers were acquired, and compared, indicating that the cellulose emitting centers are not affected by the dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids. Finally, the use of non-volatile solvents in electrospinning coupled to a water coagulation bath allows the recovery of the ionic fluid, and represents a step forward into the search of environmentally friendly alternatives to the conventional approaches
Asymmetric Combination of Logics is Functorial: A Survey
Asymmetric combination of logics is a formal process that develops the characteristic features of a specific logic on top of another one. Typical examples include the development of temporal, hybrid, and probabilistic dimensions over a given base logic. These examples are surveyed in the paper under a particular perspective—that this sort of combination of logics possesses a functorial nature. Such a view gives rise to several interesting questions. They range from the problem of combining translations (between logics), to that of ensuring property preservation along the process, and the way different asymmetric combinations can be related through appropriate natural transformations
“A Good Death” - Palliative Surgery in Trisomy 18
A trissomia 18 caracteriza-se por múltiplas anomalias, incluindo doença cardíaca em 60 a 90% dos casos e elevada mortalidade. O mau prognóstico global, conduz habitualmente a uma politica de “cuidados mínimos” mas, paliar, é também nestas situações, um imperativo ético. Descreve-se o caso de uma recém-nascida sem diagnóstico pré natal, mas
com confirmação por cariotipo, com cardiopatia, que condicionou insuficiência cardíaca congestiva e angústia respiratória crescente, inviabilizando alta hospitalar, como era desejo da família. Após consenso entre os pais e o corpo clínico responsável, foi decidida intervenção cirúrgica cardíaca paliativa, que possibilitou melhoria clínica e alta para o domicílio.
Os autores defendem que a cirurgia cardíaca pode ser uma atitude a considerar em casos de trissomia 18, pois pode aliviar o sofrimento
In vivo validation of the electronic depth control probes.
In this article, we evaluated the electrophysiological performance of a novel, high-complexity silicon probe array. This brain-implantable probe implements a dynamically reconfigurable voltage-recording device, coordinating large numbers of electronically switchable recording sites, referred to as electronic depth control (EDC). Our results show the potential of the EDC devices to record good-quality local field potentials, and single- and multiple-unit activities in cortical regions during pharmacologically induced cortical slow wave activity in an animal model
