A computerized Langmuir probe system
For low pressure plasmas it is important to record entire single or double Langmuir probe characteristics accurately. For plasmas with a depleted high energy tail, the accuracy of the recorded ion current plays a critical role in determining the electron temperature. Even for high density Maxwellian distributions, it is necessary to accurately model the ion current to obtain the correct electron density. Since the electron and ion current saturation values are, at best, orders of magnitude apart, a single current sensing resistor cannot provide the required resolution to accurately record these values. We present an automated, personal computer based data acquisition system for the determination of fundamental plasma properties in low pressure plasmas. The system is designed for single and double Langmuir probes, whose characteristics can be recorded over a bias voltage range of ±70 V with 12 bit resolution. The current flowing through the probes can be recorded within the range of 5 nA–100 mA. The use of a transimpedance amplifier for current sensing eliminates the requirement for traditional current sensing resistors and hence the need to correct the raw data. The large current recording range is realized through the use of a real time gain switching system in the negative feedback loop of the transimpedance amplifier
The microcanonical thermodynamics of finite systems: The microscopic origin of condensation and phase separations; and the conditions for heat flow from lower to higher temperatures
Microcanonical thermodynamics allows the application of statistical mechanics
both to finite and even small systems and also to the largest, self-gravitating
ones. However, one must reconsider the fundamental principles of statistical
mechanics especially its key quantity, entropy. Whereas in conventional
thermostatistics, the homogeneity and extensivity of the system and the
concavity of its entropy are central conditions, these fail for the systems
considered here. For example, at phase separation, the entropy, S(E), is
necessarily convex to make exp[S(E)-E/T] bimodal in E. Particularly, as
inhomogeneities and surface effects cannot be scaled away, one must be careful
with the standard arguments of splitting a system into two subsystems, or
bringing two systems into thermal contact with energy or particle exchange. Not
only the volume part of the entropy must be considered. As will be shown here,
when removing constraints in regions of a negative heat capacity, the system
may even relax under a flow of heat (energy) against a temperature slope. Thus
the Clausius formulation of the second law: ``Heat always flows from hot to
cold'', can be violated. Temperature is not a necessary or fundamental control
parameter of thermostatistics. However, the second law is still satisfied and
the total Boltzmann entropy increases. In the final sections of this paper, the
general microscopic mechanism leading to condensation and to the convexity of
the microcanonical entropy at phase separation is sketched. Also the
microscopic conditions for the existence (or non-existence) of a critical
end-point of the phase-separation are discussed. This is explained for the
liquid-gas and the solid-liquid transition.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in the Journal of

Lamination And Microstructuring Technology for a Bio-Cell Multiwell array
Microtechnology becomes a versatile tool for biological and biomedical
applications. Microwells have been established long but remained
non-intelligent up to now. Merging new fabrication techniques and handling
concepts with microelectronics enables to realize intelligent microwells
suitable for future improved cancer treatment. The described technology depicts
the basis for the fabrication of a elecronically enhanced microwell. Thin
aluminium sheets are structured by laser micro machining and laminated
successively to obtain registration tolerances of the respective layers of
5..10\^Am. The microwells lasermachined into the laminate are with
50..80\^Am diameter, allowing to hold individual cells within the well.
The individual process steps are described and results on the microstructuring
are given.Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association

Two-Center Integrals for r_{ij}^{n} Polynomial Correlated Wave Functions
All integrals needed to evaluate the correlated wave functions with
polynomial terms of inter-electronic distance are included. For this form of
the wave function, the integrals needed can be expressed as a product of
integrals involving at most four electrons
Comment on "On the importance of the free energy for elasticity under pressure"
Marcus et al. (Marcus P, Ma H and Qiu S L 2002 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 14
L525) claim that thermodynamic properties of materials under pressure must be
computed using the Gibbs free energy , rather than the internal energy .
Marcus et al. state that ``The minima of , but not of , give the
equilibrium structure; the second derivatives of , but not of , with
respect to strains at the equilibrium structure give the equilibrium elastic
constants.'' Both statements are incorrect.Comment: Commen
Scaling dependence on the fluid viscosity ratio in the selective withdrawal transition
In the selective withdrawal experiment fluid is withdrawn through a tube with
its tip suspended a distance S above a two-fluid interface. At sufficiently low
withdrawal rates, Q, the interface forms a steady state hump and only the upper
fluid is withdrawn. When Q is increased (or S decreased), the interface
undergoes a transition so that the lower fluid is entrained with the upper one,
forming a thin steady-state spout. Near this transition the hump curvature
becomes very large and displays power-law scaling behavior. This scaling allows
for steady-state hump profiles at different flow rates and tube heights to be
scaled onto a single similarity profile. I show that the scaling behavior is
independent of the viscosity ratio.Comment: 33 Pages, 61 figures, 1 tabl
Nonclassicality of Thermal Radiation
It is demonstrated that thermal radiation of small occupation number is
strongly nonclassical. This includes most forms of naturally occurring
radiation. Nonclassicality can be observed as a negative weak value of a
positive observable. It is related to negative values of the Margenau-Hill
quasi-probability distribution.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Quantum strategies
We consider game theory from the perspective of quantum algorithms.
Strategies in classical game theory are either pure (deterministic) or mixed
(probabilistic). We introduce these basic ideas in the context of a simple
example, closely related to the traditional Matching Pennies game. While not
every two-person zero-sum finite game has an equilibrium in the set of pure
strategies, von Neumann showed that there is always an equilibrium at which
each player follows a mixed strategy. A mixed strategy deviating from the
equilibrium strategy cannot increase a player's expected payoff. We show,
however, that in our example a player who implements a quantum strategy can
increase his expected payoff, and explain the relation to efficient quantum
algorithms. We prove that in general a quantum strategy is always at least as
good as a classical one, and furthermore that when both players use quantum
strategies there need not be any equilibrium, but if both are allowed mixed
quantum strategies there must be.Comment: 8 pages, plain TeX, 1 figur
Nonlocality, Bell's Ansatz and Probability
Quantum Mechanics lacks an intuitive interpretation, which is the cause of a
generally formalistic approach to its use. This in turn has led to a certain
insensitivity to the actual meaning of many words used in its description and
interpretation. Herein, we analyze carefully the possible mathematical meanings
of those terms used in analysis of EPR's contention, that Quantum Mechanics is
incomplete, as well as Bell's work descendant therefrom. As a result, many
inconsistencies and errors in contemporary discussions of nonlocality, as well
as in Bell's Ansatz with respect to the laws of probability, are identified.
Evading these errors precludes serious conflicts between Quantum Mechanics and
both Special Relativity and Philosophy.Comment: 8&1/2 pages revtex; v2: many corrections, clairifications &
