Start-Up Workshop of the CORE Organic project “DOMINO”
The new Core-Organic Cofund Project Domino aims at increasing
the resilience and sustainability of organic fruit growing systems in Europe by the development of new
fertilization strategies based on recycled materials, increased biodiversity in the orchard and by the use
of protected growing systems. The DOMINO workshop aims at the integration of ideas of the sector into
the project and wants to create a possibility for networking of project participants and interested
colleagues
A measurement of the Earth's radius for high school students
In the Tuscan Archipelago (Italy) it's possible to make an approximate
measurement of the Earth's radius from the Elba Island using the Pianosa Island
as a ship that appears and disappears on the horizon depending on the
observer's height above sea level. The necessary calculations require the
mathematical skills of the first two years of high school. The measurement
described here refers to a particular geographical location, but it can
probably be repeated in similar situations around the world.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, typos correcte
Light spectrum modifications under photo-selective hail-nets
The use of plastic nets is expanding to protect plants and production from hailstorms, excessive solar radiation damage and flying pests.
It is under study the possibility to reduce the wetting due to rain with a progressive increase of the mesh to drive water out of the canopy and the use of photo-selective nets for higher photosynthesis and fruit quality, and growth contro
DOMINO: Dynamic sod mulching and use of recycled amendments to increase biodiversity, resilience and sustainability of intensive organic fruit orchards and vineyards
DOMINO: focuses on the interaction of fruit trees with different wild species, organic residues and microbioma and it intends to break the paradigm of monoculture in organic fruit growing, enhancing the ecosystem services
Scalability of Optical Interconnects Based on Microring Resonators
This letter investigates the use of optical microring resonators as switching elements (SEs) in large optical interconnection fabrics. We introduce a simple physical-layer model to assess scalability in crossbar- and Benes-based architectures. We also propose a new dilated SE that improves scalability to build fabrics of several terabits per second of aggregate capacit
