Improving the quality system of educational activities is a prerequisite for successful training in the chosen specialty and further professional growth. Subject of research is motivation for professional activity of medical university students. It is not possible to form positive motivation for educational activity and profession without identifying internal and broad social motives. The purpose of the article is to identify the degree of motivation and the peculiarity of educational and professional motivation for labor activity of first-year students at the Pacific State Medical University. The research methodology was based on the theoretical concepts of labor motivation and knowledge of the regional characteristics of the state medicine at the Primorsky krai. A sociological survey of applicants and first year students was used as the main research method. The hypothesis put forward implies the predominance of material and economic incentives for admission to a medical school. An analysis of the data obtained revealed an increase in external social and economic factors affecting the motivation for entering to medical university, and a decrease in motives associated with the internal need to serve society. The scientific novelty of the research consists in identifying the features of the development of motivation to learn among applicants. The presented materials can be used to further form the student's professional picture of the world and develop his motivation in subsequent courses of study
