    Fruit dry weight and quality of 'bing' sweet cherries grown without source limitations

    Understanding the seasonal pattern of potential fruit growth is important for identification and timing of possible management operations, and quantification of this pattern is an important prerequisite to serve as input for crop growth models. `Bing¿ sweet cherry trees were heavily thinned at 63 degree-days (DD) (=8 days) after full bloom so weight and quality of the remaining fruit could be monitored under conditions of limiting and non-limiting carbohydrate supply. The effect of fruit thinning on mean shoot growth and trunk cross-sectional area also was analysed to detect possible translocation from reproductive to vegetative growth. Mean Fruit Dry Weight (MFDW) of tagged fruit was estimated weekly, based on fruit diameter, to identify the moment of the onset of competition between fruit within trees. At harvest, Fruit Number to Leaf Area Ratio (FNLAR, fruits m-2 LA) was 52% lower in heavily-thinned trees than in non-thinned trees. Yield per tree was higher (

    An Exploratory Study of the Butterfly Effect Using Agent-Based Modeling

    This paper provides insights about the behavior of chaotic complex systems, and the sensitive dependence of the system on the initial starting conditions. How much does a small change in the initial conditions of a complex system affect it in the long term? Do complex systems exhibit what is called the "Butterfly Effect"? This paper uses an agent-based modeling approach to address these questions. An existing model from NetLogo library was extended in order to compare chaotic complex systems with near-identical initial conditions. Results show that small changes in initial starting conditions can have a huge impact on the behavior of chaotic complex systems. The term the "butterfly effect" is attributed to the work of Edward Lorenz [1]. It is used to describe the sensitive dependence of the behavior of chaotic complex systems on the initial conditions of these systems. The metaphor refers to the notion that a butterfly flapping its wings somewhere may cause extreme changes in the ecological system's behavior in the future, such as a hurricane

    In this article a detailed study of La1x_{1-x}Cax_xMnO3_3 (0x0.230\leq x \leq 0.23) phase diagram using powder x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements is presented. Unfortunately, in the related literature no properly characterized samples have been used, with consequence the smearing of the real physics in this complicated system. As the present results reveal, there are two families of samples. The first family concerns samples prepared in atmosphere (P(O2)=0.2P({\rm O}_2)=0.2 Atm) which are all ferromagnetic with Curie temperature rising with xx. The second family concerns samples, where a post annealing in nearly zero oxygen partial pressure is applied. These samples show a canted antiferromagnetic structure for 0x0.10\leq x \leq 0.1 below TNT_N, while for 0.125x<0.230.125\leq x <0.23 an unconventional ferromagnetic insulated phase is present below TcT_c. The most important difference between nonstoichiometric and stoichiometric samples concerning the magnetic behavior, is the anisotropy in the exchange interactions, in the stoichiometric samples putting forward the idea that a new orbital ordered phase is responsible for the ferromagnetic insulating regime in the La1x_{1-x}Cax_xMnO3_3 compound

    Prioritising prevention strategies for patients in antiretroviral treatment programmes in resource-limited settings

    Expanded access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) offers opportunities to strengthen HIV prevention in resource-limited settings. We invited 27 ART programmes from urban settings in Africa, Asia and South America to participate in a survey, with the aim to examine what preventive services had been integrated in ART programmes. Twenty-two programmes participated; eight (36%) from South Africa, two from Brazil, two from Zambia and one each from Argentina, India, Thailand, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Morocco, Uganda and Zimbabwe and one occupational programme of a brewery company included five countries (Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi). Twenty-one sites (96%) provided health education and social support, and 18 (82%) provided HIV testing and counselling. All sites encouraged disclosure of HIV infection to spouses and partners, but only 11 (50%) had a protocol for partner notification. Twenty-one sites (96%) supplied male condoms, seven (32%) female condoms and 20 (91%) provided prophylactic ART for the prevention of mother-to child transmission. Seven sites (33%) regularly screened for sexually transmitted infections (STI). Twelve sites (55%) were involved in activities aimed at women or adolescents, and 10 sites (46%) in activities aimed at serodiscordant couples. Stigma and discrimination, gender roles and funding constraints were perceived as the main obstacles to effective prevention in ART programmes. We conclude that preventive services in ART programmes in lower income countries focus on health education and the provision of social support and male condoms. Strategies that might be equally or more important in this setting, including partner notification, prompt diagnosis and treatment of STI and reduction of stigma in the community, have not been implemented widely

    On the Distortion and Warpage of 7249 Aluminum Alloy After Quenching and Machining

    The objective of this study is to determine the effect of solution treatment temperature, quenching media, and various machining sequences on the warpage behavior of aluminum 7249 alloy aged to T6 and T7\u27 tempers. Large extrusions of 7249 aluminum alloy with fins were cut into 108 T sections. The samples were solution-treated, aged, and machined. Three solution temperatures (445, 474, and 505 A degrees C), two quenching media (water and 20% polyalkylene glycol), two aging treatments (T6 and T7\u27), and three machine sequences were used. The flatness of the samples was measured on the surfaces orthogonal to the z-axis. Three points were on top of both shoulders (six total), six were at the bottom of the sample, and six were on the top of the fin, in the cases where the fin was not milled off. They were then averaged together by surface to represent the overall warpage of each sample

    Background: D-dimer was introduced in 2018 as an alternative biomarker for C-reactive protein (CRP) in the diagnostic of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) criteria of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society. We assessed the accuracy of plasma D-dimer for the diagnosis of early, delayed, and late PJI according to Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) criteria, and whether persistently high levels of D-dimer in cases of aseptic loosening (AL) may be predictive of subsequent implant-related infection. Methods: A prospective study of a consecutive series of 187 revision arthroplasties was performed at a single institution.Septic (n = 39) and aseptic revisions (n = 141) were classified based on IDSA criteria. Preoperative assessment of CRP, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and D-dimer was performed. Receiver operating curves were used to determine maximum sensitivity and specificity of the biomarkers. The natural progress of D-dimer for AL cases was followed up either until the date of implant-related infection at any time during the first year or 1 year after revision in patients without failure. Clinical outcomes for those AL cases included infection-related failure that required a new surgery or need for antibiotic suppression. Results: Preoperative D-dimer level was significantly higher in PJI cases than in AL cases (p = 0.000). The optimal threshold of D-dimer for the diagnosis of PJI was 1167 ng/mL. For overall diagnosis of PJI, C-reactive protein (CRP) achieved the highest sensitivity (84.6%), followed by erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and D-dimer (82% and 71.8%, respectively). Plasma D-dimer sensitivity was lower for all PJI types. When combinations of 2 tests were studied, the combined use of ESR and CRP achieved the best accuracy for all types of PJI (76.9%). 4.25% of AL cases had implant failure due to implant-related infection during the first year after the index revision arthroplasty, only the cases with early failure maintained high D-dimer levels

    Evidence for Extended Aqueous Alteration in CR Carbonaceous Chondrites

    We are currently studying the chemical interrelationships between the main rockforming components of carbonaceous chondrites (hereafter CC), e.g. silicate chondrules, refractory inclusions and metal grains, and the surrounding meteorite matrices. It is thought that the fine-grained materials that form CC matrices are representing samples of relatively unprocessed protoplanetary disk materials [1-3]. In fact, modern non-destructive analytical techniques have shown that CC matrices host a large diversity of stellar grains from many distinguishable stellar sources [4]. Aqueous alteration has played a role in homogeneizing the isotopic content that allows the identification of presolar grains [5]. On the other hand, detailed analytical techniques have found that the aqueously-altered CR, CM and CI chondrite groups contain matrices in which the organic matter has experienced significant processing concomitant to the formation of clays and other minerals. In this sense, clays have been found to be directly associated with complex organics [6, 7]. CR chondrites are particularly relevant in this context as this chondrite group contains abundant metal grains in the interstitial matrix, and inside glassy silicate chondrules. It is important because CR are known for exhibiting a large complexity of organic compounds [8-10], and only metallic Fe is considered essential in Fischer-Tropsch catalysis of organics [11-13]. Therefore, CR chondrites can be considered primitive materials capable to provide clues on the role played by aqueous alteration in the chemical evolution of their parent asteroids

    Double left ventricular pacing following accidental malpositioning of the right ventricular electrode during implantation of a cardiac resynchronization therapy device

    Accidental malpositioning of a right ventricular (RV) electrode has not been previously reported in the context of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). The case of a 75-year old male patient with dilative cardiomyopathy, left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction 23%, New York Heart Association functional heart failure status stage III, left bundle branch block (LBBB) with QRS width of 136 ms, and misplacement of the RV lead to the LV apex during implantation of a CRT defibrillator is described. Following unremarkable implantation, routine interrogation of the CRT device on the first day after the implantation revealed uneventful technical findings. The 12-lead surface electrocardiogram (ECG) showed biventricular stimulation featuring a narrow QRS complex with incomplete right bundle branch block (RBBB) and R>S in V1. The biplane postoperative chest X-ray was graded normal. On routine follow-up one month later, a transthoracic echocardiogram revealed an increased ejection fraction of 51% but the RV lead was placed in the LV apex. An additional transesophageal echocardiogram exhibited an Eustachian valve guiding the lead via the patent foramen ovale through the mitral valve into the LV apex. Operative revision was scheduled and the active fixation lead was uneventful removed from the LV. A new electrode was inserted and placed in the RV apex. Accidental malplacement of the RV electrode to the LV may be difficult to diagnose in the context of CRT patients as a stimulated biventricular ECG with incomplete RBBB appearance is expected in this situation. Careful analysis of lateral radiographic views during the operation is important to ensure correct lead positioning. As timely revision is the preferred procedure, early routine transthoracic echocardiography may be considered for detection of malplacement

    Nuclear transparency and effective kaon-nucleon cross section from the A(e, e'K+) reaction

    We have determined the transparency of the nuclear medium to kaons from A(e,eK+)A(e,e^{'} K^{+}) measurements on 12^{12}C, 63^{63}Cu, and 197^{197}Au targets. The measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory and span a range in four-momentum-transfer squared Q2^2=1.1 -- 3.0 GeV2^2. The nuclear transparency was defined as the ratio of measured kaon electroproduction cross sections with respect to deuterium, (σA/σD\sigma^{A}/\sigma^{D}). We further extracted the atomic number (AA) dependence of the transparency as parametrized by T=(A/2)α1T= (A/2)^{\alpha-1} and, within a simple model assumption, the in-medium effective kaon-nucleon cross sections. The effective cross sections extracted from the electroproduction data are found to be smaller than the free cross sections determined from kaon-nucleon scattering experiments, and the parameter α\alpha was found to be significantly larger than those obtained from kaon-nucleus scattering. We have included similar comparisons between pion- and proton-nucleon effective cross sections as determined from electron scattering experiments, and pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus scattering data.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
