Modelling fat and protein concentration curves for Irish dairy cows
peer-reviewedThe objective of this study was to acquire a well-fitting, single-equation model that would represent the fat and protein concentration curves of milk from Irish dairy cows. The dataset consisted of 16,086 records from both spring and autumn calving cows from both experimental and commercial herds. Many models cited in the literature to represent milk yield were examined for their suitability to model constituent curves. Models were tested for goodness-of-fit, adherence to the assumptions of regression analysis, and their ability to predict total fat and protein concentration for an entire lactation. Wilmink’s model best satisfied these criteria. It had the best Mean Square Prediction Error (goodness-of-fit) value, it satisfied the assumptions of regression analysis (multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation and normality of distribution), and it predicted the actual concentration of the constituents to within 0.01 percentage point
Quantifying critical thinking: Development and validation of the Physics Lab Inventory of Critical thinking (PLIC)
Introductory physics lab instruction is undergoing a transformation, with
increasing emphasis on developing experimentation and critical thinking skills.
These changes present a need for standardized assessment instruments to
determine the degree to which students develop these skills through
instructional labs. In this article, we present the development and validation
of the Physics Lab Inventory of Critical thinking (PLIC). We define critical
thinking as the ability to use data and evidence to decide what to trust and
what to do. The PLIC is a 10-question, closed-response assessment that probes
student critical thinking skills in the context of physics experimentation.
Using interviews and data from 5584 students at 29 institutions, we
demonstrate, through qualitative and quantitative means, the validity and
reliability of the instrument at measuring student critical thinking skills.

High-resolution simulations of the final assembly of Earth-like planets 2: water delivery and planetary habitability
The water content and habitability of terrestrial planets are determined
during their final assembly, from perhaps a hundred 1000-km "planetary embryos"
and a swarm of billions of 1-10 km "planetesimals." During this process, we
assume that water-rich material is accreted by terrestrial planets via impacts
of water-rich bodies that originate in the outer asteroid region. We present
analysis of water delivery and planetary habitability in five high-resolution
simulations containing about ten times more particles than in previous
simulations (Raymond et al 2006a, Icarus, 183, 265-282). These simulations
formed 15 terrestrial planets from 0.4 to 2.6 Earth masses, including five
planets in the habitable zone. Every planet from each simulation accreted at
least the Earth's current water budget; most accreted several times that amount
(assuming no impact depletion). Each planet accreted at least five water-rich
embryos and planetesimals from past 2.5 AU; most accreted 10-20 water-rich
bodies.
We present a new model for water delivery to terrestrial planets in
dynamically calm systems, with low-eccentricity or low-mass giant planets --
such systems may be very common in the Galaxy. We suggest that water is
accreted in comparable amounts from a few planetary embryos in a "hit or miss"
way and from millions of planetesimals in a statistically robust process.
Variations in water content are likely to be caused by fluctuations in the
number of water-rich embryos accreted, as well as from systematic effects such

Detection of abnormal recordings in Irish milk recorded data
peer-reviewedThe objective of this study was to detect abnormal recordings of milk yield, fat concentration and protein concentration in Irish milk-recorded data. The data consisted of 14,956 records from both commercial and experimental herds with 92% of the recordings recorded manually and the remainder recorded electronically. The method used in this paper was a modified version of the method employed by the Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory in Maryland, USA and conformed with the guidelines outlined by the International Committee of Animal Recording. The results illustrate the effectiveness of detecting abnormal recordings in Irish milk records. The method described in this paper, defines the upper and lower limits for each production trait and these limits along with the slope parameters were used to determine if a recording was abnormal or not. Three percent of milk yield recordings, 5% of fat concentration recordings and less than 1% of protein concentration recordings were found to be abnormal. The proportion of values declared abnormal in manually recorded and electronically recorded data were examined and found to be significantly different for fat concentration
Perceptions of Transactional and Transformational Leaders According to Gender
The lack of females occupying leadership positions in the modern workplace has prompted the research of this study. In order to better understand the perceptions that exist regarding successful leadership, this study was conducted with the intention of understanding individual leadership style through the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, which measures transactional and transformational leadership styles (Bass and Avolio, 1993). 64 male and female participants, made up of 36 students and 28 individuals in the workforce ages 18-61 with an average age of 31 answered 21 questions to assess their leadership style and 1 to measure who they perceived as a successful leader, with responses coded by gender of responder and response. This study aimed to assess whether males identified more with transactional leadership and females with transformational leadership style, which would confirm current research conducted in the field. The Chi Squared statistical analysis test results showed that 72.4% of males displayed transformational leadership styles, along with 82.9% of females displaying this same style, which showed a lack of significance between gender and difference in leadership style. However, in response to the question asking to identify a successful leader, results showed that most individuals of both gender wrote down a male leader
A Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor with a Bulk 3D Dirac Cone Gapped by Strong Spin Orbit Coupling
Layered, non-centrosymmetric, heavy element PbTaSe2 is found to be
superconducting. We report its electronic properties accompanied by electronic
structure calculations. Specific heat, electrical resistivity and magnetic
susceptibility measurements indicate that PbTaSe2 is a moderately coupled,
type-II BCS superconductor (Tc = 3.72 K, Ginzburg-Landau parameter Kappa = 14)
with an electronphonon coupling constant of Lambda_ep = 0.74. Electronic
structure calculations reveal a single bulk 3D Dirac cone at the K point of the
Brillouin Zone derived exclusively from its hexagonal Pb layer; it is similar
to the feature found in graphene except there is a 0.8 eV gap opened by
spin-orbit coupling. The combination of large spin-orbit coupling and lack of
inversion symmetry also results in large Rashba splitting on the order of
tenths of eV
