    How hole defects modify vortex dynamics in ferromagnetic nanodisks

    Defects introduced in ferromagnetic nanodisks may deeply affect the structure and dynamics of stable vortex-like magnetization. Here, analytical techniques are used for studying, among other dynamical aspects, how a small cylindrical cavity modify the oscillatory modes of the vortex. For instance, we have realized that if the vortex is nucleated out from the hole its gyrotropic frequencies are shifted below. Modifications become even more pronounced when the vortex core is partially or completely captured by the hole. In these cases, the gyrovector can be partially or completely suppressed, so that the associated frequencies increase considerably, say, from some times to several powers. Possible relevance of our results for understanding other aspects of vortex dynamics in the presence of cavities and/or structural defects are also discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 4 page

    A canonical transformation and the tunneling probability for the birth of an asymptotically DeSitter universe with dust

    In the present work, we study the quantum cosmology description of closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models in the presence of a positive cosmological constant and a generic perfect fluid. We work in the Schutz's variational formalism. If one uses the scale factor and its canonically conjugated momentum as the phase space variables that describe the geometrical sector of these models, one obtains Wheeler-DeWitt equations with operator ordering ambiguities. In order to avoid those ambiguities and simplify the quantum treatment of the models, we introduce new phase space variables. We explicitly demonstrate that the transformation leading from the old set of variables to the new one is canonical. In order to show that the above canonical transformations simplify the quantum treatment of those models, we consider a particular model where the perfect fluid is dust. We solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation numerically using the Crank-Nicholson scheme and determine the time evolution of the initial wave function. Finally, we compare the results for the present model with the ones for another model where the only difference is the presence of a radiative perfect fluid, instead of dust.Comment: Revtex4, 18 pages, 2 EPS figure

    The Comment by Amore {\it et al.} [gr-qc/0611029] contains a valid criticism of the numerical precision of the results reported in a recent paper of ours [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 73}, 044022 (2006)], as well as fresh ideas on how to characterize a quantum cosmological singularity. However, we argue that, contrary to what is suggested in the Comment, the quantum cosmological models we studied show hardly any sign of singular behavior.Comment: 4 pages, accepted by Physical Review

    Detrimental effect of rutin on Anticarsia gemmatalis.

    Behavioral and nutritional effect of rutin (quercetin 3-O-rutinosídeo) on Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lep.: Noctuidae), a major soybean defoliator in Brazil, was evaluated from the third instar to pupation. Rutin is one of the flavonol glycosides identified in the leaves of the wild soybean PI 227687. Larval weight and amount of ingested food decreased as rutin concentration in the diet increase. An interactive effect between feeding time and diet (treatment) was observed on insect growth; when larvae fed on pure-diet, feeding time elongation resulted in heavier pupae. Differently, the weight of larvae fed on rutin-diet remained almost stable, in spite of eating for longer. A. gemmatalis growth was negatively influenced by rutin-diet not only by feeding deterrence but also by post-ingestive effect on insect growth, since after adjustment of pupal weight by the amount of ingested food (covariate), the effect of diet remained significant. Rutin negatively influenced A. gemmatalis growth as result of pre-ingestive effect, indicated by reduction in food consumption, and post-ingestive effect, indicated by lower conversion of ingested food into body mass and food assimilation

    Neste trabalho objetivou-se avaliar as características da produção de gramíneas consorciadas com pastos anuais (milheto e sorgo pastejo) em safrinha no Cerrado maranhense. Os arranjos entre gramíneas e pastos anuais foram divididos em dois sistemas. No sistema I avaliaram-se os tratamentos: sorgo + Brachiaria ruziziensis; sorgo + Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piatã; sorgo + B. brizantha cv. Xaraés; sorgo + Panicum maximum cv. Massai; sorgo + P. maximum cv. Aruana. No sistema II, avaliaram-se: milheto + B. brizantha cv. Xaraés; milheto + B. ruziziensis; milheto + B. brizantha cv. Piatã; milheto + P. maximum cv. Massai e milheto + P. maximum cv. Aruana. O delineamento experimental foi em faixas, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliadas, aos 100 dias após a semeadura: altura das gramíneas, cobertura do solo e disponibilidade de massa seca de forragem (MF). O consórcio não foi significativo (P>0,05) para altura das gramíneas e cobertura do solo. Em termos de produção de MF a Braquiaria ruziziensis se destacou das demais nos sistemas I e II. A menor produção de MF foi observada para os capins Massai, Piatã, Xaraés e Aruana (P>0,05). Em sistemas integrados de produção, as braquiárias destacaram-se entre as melhores opções para viabilizar o Sistema Plantio Direto. O consórcio das gramíneas com pastos anuais em safrinha no Cerrado maranhense é uma boa alternativa para formação da pastagem

    Predicted defect induced vortex core switching in thin magnetic nanodisks

    We investigate the influence of artificial defects (small holes) inserted into magnetic nanodisks on the vortex core dynamics. One and two holes (antidots) are considered. In general, the core falls into the hole but, in particular, we would like to remark an interesting phenomenon not yet observed, which is the vortex core switching induced by the vortex-hole interactions. It occurs for the case with only one hole and for very special conditions involving the hole size and position as well as the disk size. Any small deformation in the disk geometry such as the presence of a second antidot changes completely the vortex dynamics and the vortex core eventually falls into one of the defects. After trapped, the vortex center still oscillates with a very high frequency and small amplitude around the defect center.Comment: 11pages, Revtex format, 17 figure

    Gauging the SU(2) Skyrme model

    In this paper the SU(2) Skyrme model will be reformulated as a gauge theory and the hidden symmetry will be investigated and explored in the energy spectrum computation. To this end we purpose a new constraint conversion scheme, based on the symplectic framework with the introduction of Wess-Zumino (WZ) terms in an unambiguous way. It is a positive feature not present on the BFFT constraint conversion. The Dirac's procedure for the first-class constraints is employed to quantize this gauge invariant nonlinear system and the energy spectrum is computed. The finding out shows the power of the symplectic gauge-invariant formalism when compared with another constraint conversion procedures present on the literature.Comment: revised version, to appear in Phys.Rev.
