Little Higgs Model Completed with a Chiral Fermionic Sector
The implementation of the little Higgs mechanism to solve the hierarchy
problem provides an interesting guiding principle to build particle physics
models beyond the electroweak scale. Most model building works, however, pay
not much attention to the fermionic sector. Through a case example, we
illustrate how a complete and consistent fermionic sector of the TeV effective
field theory may actually be largely dictated by the gauge structure of the
model. The completed fermionic sector has specific flavor physics structure,
and many phenomenological constraints on the model can thus be obtained beyond
gauge, Higgs, and top physics. We take a first look on some of the quark sector

The Discovery of Quasisoft and Supersoft Sources in External Galaxies
We apply a uniform procedure to select very soft sources from point sources
observed by Chandra in 4 galaxies. This sample includes one elliptical galaxy
(NGC 4967), 2 face-on spirals (M101 and M83), and an interacting galaxy (M51).
We have found very soft X-ray sources (VSSs) in every galaxy. Some of these fit
the criteria for canonical supersoft sources (SSSs), while others are somewhat
harder. These latter have characteristic values of kT < 300 eV; we refer to
them as quasisoft sources (QSSs). We found a combined total of 149 VSSs in the
4 galaxies we considered; 77 were SSSs and 72 were QSSs. (See the paper for the

Experience versus Talent Shapes the Structure of the Web
We use sequential large-scale crawl data to empirically investigate and
validate the dynamics that underlie the evolution of the structure of the web.
We find that the overall structure of the web is defined by an intricate
interplay between experience or entitlement of the pages (as measured by the
number of inbound hyperlinks a page already has), inherent talent or fitness of
the pages (as measured by the likelihood that someone visiting the page would
give a hyperlink to it), and the continual high rates of birth and death of
pages on the web. We find that the web is conservative in judging talent and
the overall fitness distribution is exponential, showing low variability. The
small variance in talent, however, is enough to lead to experience
distributions with high variance: The preferential attachment mechanism
amplifies these small biases and leads to heavy-tailed power-law (PL) inbound
degree distributions over all pages, as well as over pages that are of the same
age. The balancing act between experience and talent on the web allows newly
introduced pages with novel and interesting content to grow quickly and surpass
older pages. In this regard, it is much like what we observe in high-mobility
and meritocratic societies: People with entitlement continue to have access to
the best resources, but there is just enough screening for fitness that allows
for talented winners to emerge and join the ranks of the leaders. Finally, we
show that the fitness estimates have potential practical applications in
ranking query results
Semiconducting-to-metallic photoconductivity crossover and temperature-dependent Drude weight in graphene
We investigated the transient photoconductivity of graphene at various
gate-tuned carrier densities by optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. We
demonstrated that graphene exhibits semiconducting positive photoconductivity
near zero carrier density, which crosses over to metallic negative
photoconductivity at high carrier density. Our observations are accounted for
by considering the interplay between photo-induced changes of both the Drude
weight and the carrier scattering rate. Notably, we observed multiple sign
changes in the temporal photoconductivity dynamics at low carrier density. This
behavior reflects the non-monotonic temperature dependence of the Drude weight,
a unique property of massless Dirac fermions
Livelihood Disruption and Venture Creation: Entrepreneurship as Technology Adoption A Comparison between Kentucky and Shaanxi Farmers
In the US, The Tobacco Transition Payment Program, also called the "tobacco buy-out," helps tobacco quota holders and producers transition to the free market. In China, the transaction of Land Use Rights providing farmers’ ability to buy or sell Land Use Rights has been seriously considered by the Chinese government. The uncertainty in household income and changes in economic environment during the US Tobacco Transition Payment Program and the Chinese Land Use Rights Regime lead many individuals into entrepreneurial activities. Entrepreneurship often means making changes in livelihood activities that involve substantial risks to income. While the rewards may be substantial, transactions costs may make decisions irreversible. This paper draws a comparison between entrepreneurship and technology adoption. Adopting a new production technology also involves substantial risks. The economics of technology adoption is a well developed literature with many accepted and testable models. Most prominent are the theories of learning by using and learning by doing. We review the technology adoption literature, drawing out lessons for entrepreneurship research. We then apply an ‘entrepreneurship as technology adoption’ model to a unique dataset collected in Kentucky, US and in Shaanxi province, China. Using a sample of 702 Kentucky farmers at the time of the buyout and 730 Chinese farmers, we test several of the implications of this model and compare significant results between Kentucky and Shaanxi farmers. This study finds that both farmers in Kentucky and Shaanxi with a strong social network are more likely to become entrepreneurs. Kentucky farmers with low income are more likely to start new businesses. The finding supports the “push” hypothesis as farmers with low income are pushed into starting a new business. Lattice vibrations and structural instability in Cesium near the cubic to tetragonal transition
Under pressure cesium undergoes a transition from a high-pressure fcc phase
(Cs-II) to a collapsed fcc phase (Cs-III) near 4.2GPa. At 4.4GPa there follows
a transition to the tetragonal Cs-IV phase. In order to investigate the lattice
vibrations in the fcc phase and seek a possible dynamical instability of the
lattice, the phonon spectra of fcc-Cs at volumes near the III-IV transition are
calculated using Savrasov's density functional linear-response LMTO method.
Compared with quasiharmonic model calculations including non-central
interatomic forces up to second neighbours, at the volume (
is the experimental volume of bcc-Cs with =6.048{\AA}), the
linear-response calculations show soft intermediate wavelength
phonons. Similar softening is also observed for
short wavelength and phonons and intermediate
wavelength phonons. The Born-von K\'{a}rm\'{a}n analysis of
dispersion curves indicates that the interplanar force constants exhibit
oscillating behaviours against plane spacing and the large softening of
intermediate wavelength phonons results from a
negative (110)-interplanar force-constant . The frequencies of the
phonons with around 1/3 become imaginary
and the fcc structure becomes dynamically unstable for volumes below .
It is suggested that superstructures corresponding to the
soft mode should be present as a precursor of tetragonal Cs-IV structure.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
