    Penetration In Granite By Jets From Shaped-charge Liners Of Six Materials

    A new application of theory for three-dimensional collapse of conical liners shows why the two-dimensional analysis may offer a good approximation. Shaped-charge design parameters and rock target properties were investigated to determine their effects on penetration and breakage. Several metals, liner thicknesses, cone angles and standoff ranges for each were investigated. Effective standoff is greater for aluminum than more dense metals. Jets from the 60° monel, brass and steel liners gave the deepest penetration in granite. Jets from copper and brass liners gave equal penetration for 42° apex angles. Liners containing zinc produced small slugs or none at all. The holes in the granite were uniform and approximated right circular cones. Jet penetration velocities into granite varied from a maximum of 10,000 m/sec to a minimum of 2000 m/sec for the most effective metal jet. © 1973

    Impact of health education on unmet needs of contraception in urban slums of Chandigarh, India

    Background: Unmet need points to gap between some women reproductive intention and their contraceptive behavior. Unmet need for contraception is mainly attributed to lack of information, negative attitude, fear of adverse effects and social influences. The objective of this study was to investigate awareness and practice of contraceptive usage. And to estimate unmet need of contraception in the studied population and to identify the factors associated with it, and to evaluate impact of health education on unmet needs of contraception.Methods: A community-based longitudinal study was conducted in four randomly selected urban slum areas (colonies) of Chandigarh, India. A systematic two-stage random sample design was adopted.Results: Overall contraceptive awareness rates among women and men were increased from 84.1% to 96.3% and from 82.2% to 95.5% in post-interventional survey as compared to baseline survey. Contraceptive prevalence rates were found to be 57.3% and 65.5% respectively in pre interventional and post interventional surveys, against contraceptive awareness rates of 81.7% and 95.5% respectively, resulting in gaps between knowledge and practice to be unmet needs of contraception to the extents of 24.4% and 30.0% respectively in the two surveys.Conclusions: There is an urgent need of adopting some population specific integral strategies for changing social norms and attitudes of couples regarding reproductive issues, increase in contraceptives awareness as well as practice for reductions in unmet needs of contraception and unwanted/unplanned pregnancies

    A NWB-based dataset and processing pipeline of human single-neuron activity during a declarative memory task

    A challenge for data sharing in systems neuroscience is the multitude of different data formats used. Neurodata Without Borders: Neurophysiology 2.0 (NWB:N) has emerged as a standardized data format for the storage of cellular-level data together with meta-data, stimulus information, and behavior. A key next step to facilitate NWB:N adoption is to provide easy to use processing pipelines to import/export data from/to NWB:N. Here, we present a NWB-formatted dataset of 1863 single neurons recorded from the medial temporal lobes of 59 human subjects undergoing intracranial monitoring while they performed a recognition memory task. We provide code to analyze and export/import stimuli, behavior, and electrophysiological recordings to/from NWB in both MATLAB and Python. The data files are NWB:N compliant, which affords interoperability between programming languages and operating systems. This combined data and code release is a case study for how to utilize NWB:N for human single-neuron recordings and enables easy re-use of this hard-to-obtain data for both teaching and research on the mechanisms of human memory

    Comparison of cephalometric craniofacial features and facial photographic features for two generations of patients

    Objective: To estimate the correlation and variant heritability values of craniofacial variables between parents and their offspring. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 20 Indian families; each family consisted of father, mother, son, and daughter. Lateral cephalometric radiographs and facial photographs were taken for each family member.Fifty -three angular, linear, and proportional cephalometric variables were measured and photographic analysis was done. Interfamilial correlations and heritability (h2) values were estimated among father-son, father-daughter,mother-son, and mother-daughter pairings. Results: The most similar angular measurements between parents and offspring were as follows:SNA0,SNB0 ,ANB0 ,FMA0, MP-FH0 , LI-NB0, Op-FH0 ,UI-NA0 , OP-SN0, LI-NB0 and The most similar linear measurements were as follows: Co-Pt.A,Co-Gn, N- ANS, , UI-A, Me-Me’,LI-A.Pog, Mx 1 exposure. Both the correlation coefficients and the heritable values were stronger in the father-offspring than the mother-offspring pairings. Conclusions: The overall correlation and h2 mean values for the three types of measurements showed stronger values in the father-offspring than the mother-offspring groups, with the father –son pairings more significant than the father-daughter groups

    Retaining Expression on De-identified Faces

    © Springer International Publishing AG 2017The extensive use of video surveillance along with advances in face recognition has ignited concerns about the privacy of the people identifiable in the recorded documents. A face de-identification algorithm, named k-Same, has been proposed by prior research and guarantees to thwart face recognition software. However, like many previous attempts in face de-identification, kSame fails to preserve the utility such as gender and expression of the original data. To overcome this, a new algorithm is proposed here to preserve data utility as well as protect privacy. In terms of utility preservation, this new algorithm is capable of preserving not only the category of the facial expression (e.g., happy or sad) but also the intensity of the expression. This new algorithm for face de-identification possesses a great potential especially with real-world images and videos as each facial expression in real life is a continuous motion consisting of images of the same expression with various degrees of intensity.Peer reviewe
