    Hermetically sealable package for hybrid solid-state electronic devices and the like

    A light-weight, inexpensively fabricated, hermetically sealable, repairable package for small electronic or electromechanical units, having multiple connections, is described. A molded ring frame of polyamide-imide plastic (Torlon) is attached along one edge to a base plate formed of a highly heat conducting material, such as aluminum or copper. Bores are placed through a base plate within the area of the edge surface of ring frame which result in an attachment of the ring frame to the base plate during molding. Electrical leads are molded into the ring frame. The leads are L-shaped gold-plated copper wires imbedded within widened portions of the side wall of the ring frame. Within the plastic ring frame wall the leads are bent (typically, though not necessarily at 90 deg) so that they project into the interior volume of the ring frame for connection to the solid state devices

    Probing the Phase Diagram of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d with Tunneling Spectroscopy

    Tunneling measurements are performed on Ca-rich single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212), with various oxygen doping levels, using a novel point contact method. At 4.2 K, SIN and SIS tunnel junctions are obtained with well-defined quasiparticle peaks, robust dip and hump features and in some cases Josephson currents. The doping dependence of tunneling conductances of Ca-rich Bi2212 are analyzed and compared to stoichiometric Bi2212. A similar profile of energy gap vs. doping concentration is found although the Ca-rich samples have a slighly smaller optimum Tc and therefore smaller gap values for any doping level. The evolution of tunneling conductance peak height to background ratios with hole concentration are compared. For a given doping level, the Ca-rich spectra showed more broadened features compared to the stoichiometric counterparts, most likely due to increased disorder from the excess Ca.     Microwave oven fabricated hybrid memristor devices for non-volatile memory storage

    © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd. Novel hybrid non-volatile memories made using an ultra-fast microwave heating method are reported for the first time. The devices, consisting of aligned ZnO nanorods embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate), require no forming step and exhibit reliable and reproducible bipolar resistive switching at low voltages and with low power usage. We attribute these properties to a combination of the high aspect ratio of the nanorods and the polymeric hybrid structure of the device. The extremely easy, fast and low-cost solution based method of fabrication makes possible the simple and quick production of cheap memory cells

    X-Ray Measurement and Porosity in Graphite/Polyimide Composites

    One of the persistent problems in the control of quality in materials used in structures is that of porosity. Whether the material is a casting, an epoxy composite, or a complex ceramic or metal matrix composite, the presence of porosity, depending upon the severity, causes a degradation of the parts performance characteristics and their longevity. The detection of porosity in many industries is important in two ways, namely, in material quality control and in monitoring process control (1). One class of materials where both of these problems arise is the graphite composites (2–4). To date, the inspection of these composites using an X-ray method has been unsatisfactory in that the film methods frequently tried did not have the sensitivity resolution to yield a quantitative measure of the porosity volume percent. Such a measure becomes even more critical in ceramic composites in that the difference between a good material and a poor one is a level of porosity rather than the presence of porosity, as is the case in graphite epoxy composites. We wish to report results of an X-ray method to measure porosity in materials using the graphite polyimide composites as an example. The method is certainly not restricted to this type of graphite composite or indeed to graphite composites

    Single Junction and Intrinsic Josephson Junction Tunneling Spectroscopies of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

    Tunneling spectroscopy measurements are reported on optimally-doped and overdoped Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+δ_{8+\delta} single crystals. A novel point contact method is used to obtain superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) and SIS break junctions as well as intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJ) from nanoscale crystals. Three junction types are obtained on the same crystal to compare the quasiparticle peaks and higher bias dip/hump structures which have also been found in other surface probes such as scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. However, our IJJ quasiparticle spectra consistently reveal very sharp conductance peaks and no higher bias dip structures. The IJJ conductance peak voltage divided by the number of junctions in the stack consistently leads to a significant underestimate of Δ\Delta when compared to the single junction values. The comparison of the three methods suggests that the markedly different characteristics of IJJ are a consequence of nonequilibrium effects and are not intrinsic quasiparticle features.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; presented at the Applied Superconductivity Conference (October 3-8, 2004) in Jacksonville, FL; to be published in IEEE Trans.     Energy Gap from Tunneling and Metallic Sharvin Contacts onto MgB2: Evidence for a Weakened Surface Layer

    Point-contact tunnel junctions using a Au tip on sintered MgB2 pellets reveal a sharp superconducting energy gap that is confirmed by subsequent metallic Sharvin contacts made on the same sample. The peak in the tunneling conductance and the Sharvin contact conductance follow the BCS form, but the gap values of 4.3 meV are less than the weak-coupling BCS value of 5.9 meV for the bulk Tc of 39 K. The low value of Delta compared to the BCS value for the bulk Tc is possibly due to chemical reactions at the surface.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    Assessing the Sensitivity of Different Life Stages for Sexual Disruption in Roach (Rutilus rutilus) Exposed to Effluents from Wastewater Treatment Works

    Surveys of U.K. rivers have shown a high incidence of sexual disruption in populations of wild roach (Rutilus rutilus) living downstream from wastewater treatment works (WwTW), and the degree of intersex (gonads containing both male and female structural characteristics) has been correlated with the concentration of effluent in those rivers. In this study, we investigated feminized responses to two estrogenic WwTWs in roach exposed for periods during life stages of germ cell division (early life and the postspawning period). Roach were exposed as embryos from fertilization up to 300 days posthatch (dph; to include the period of gonadal sex differentiation) or as postspawning adult males, and including fish that had received previous estrogen exposure, for either 60 or 120 days when the annual event of germ cell proliferation occurs. Both effluents induced vitellogenin synthesis in both life stages studied, and the magnitude of the vitellogenic responses paralleled the effluent content of steroid estrogens. Feminization of the reproductive ducts occurred in male fish in a concentration-dependent manner when the exposure occurred during early life, but we found no effects on the reproductive ducts in adult males. Depuration studies (maintenance of fish in clean water after exposure to WwTW effluent) confirmed that the feminization of the reproductive duct was permanent. We found no evidence of ovotestis development in fish that had no previous estrogen exposure for any of the treatments. In wild adult roach that had previously received exposure to estrogen and were intersex, the degree of intersex increased during the study period, but this was not related to the immediate effluent exposure, suggesting a previously determined programming of ovotestis formation
