de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in the underdoped cuprate YBaCuO
The de Haas-van Alphen effect was observed in the underdoped cuprate
YBaCuO via a torque technique in pulsed magnetic fields up to
59 T. Above an irreversibility field of 30 T, the magnetization exhibits
clear quantum oscillations with a single frequency of 540 T and a cyclotron
mass of 1.76 times the free electron mass, in excellent agreement with
previously observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The oscillations obey the
standard Lifshitz-Kosevich formula of Fermi-liquid theory. This thermodynamic
observation of quantum oscillations confirms the existence of a well-defined,
close and coherent, Fermi surface in the pseudogap phase of cuprates.Comment: published versio
High frequency magnetic oscillations of the organic metal -(ET)ZnBr(CHCl) in pulsed magnetic field of up to 81 T
De Haas-van Alphen oscillations of the organic metal
-(ET)ZnBr(CHCl) are studied in pulsed magnetic
fields up to 81 T. The long decay time of the pulse allows determining reliable
field-dependent amplitudes of Fourier components with frequencies up to several
kiloteslas. The Fourier spectrum is in agreement with the model of a linear
chain of coupled orbits. In this model, all the observed frequencies are linear
combinations of the frequency linked to the basic orbit and to the
magnetic-breakdown orbit .Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Saccharothrix sp. PAL54, a new chloramphenicol-producing strain isolated from a Saharan soil
An actinomycete strain designated PAL54, producing an antibacterial substance, was isolated from a Saharan soil in Ghardaïa, Algeria. Morphological and chemical studies indicated that this strain belonged to the genus Saccharothrix. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence showed a similarity level ranging between 96.9 and 99.2% within Saccharothrix species, with S. longispora DSM 43749T, the most closely related. DNA–DNA hybridization confirmed that strain PAL54 belonged to Saccharothrix longispora. It showed very strong activity against pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria responsible for nosocomial infections and resistant to multiple antibiotics. Strain PAL54 secreted the antibiotic optimally during mid-stationary and decline phases of growth. One antibacterial compound was isolated from the culture broth and purified by HPLC. The active compound was elucidated by uv-visible and NMR spectroscopy and by mass spectrometry. The results showed that this compound was a D(-)-threo chloramphenicol. This is the first report of chloramphenicol production by a Saccharothrix species
Actinopolyspora algeriensis sp. nov., a novel halophilic actinomycete isolated from a Saharan soil
A halophilic actinomycete strain designated H19T, was isolated from a Saharan soil in the Bamendil region (Ouargla province, South Algeria) and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. The morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of the
strain were consistent with those of members of the genus
Actinopolyspora, and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed that strain H19T was a novel species of the genus
Actinopolyspora. DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain H19T and the nearest Actinopolyspora species, A. halophila, was clearly below the 70 % threshold. The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that the organism represents a novel species of the genus Actinopolyspora for which the name Actinopolyspora algeriensis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain H19T (= DSM 45476T = CCUG 62415T)
Theory of quantum magneto-oscillations in underdoped cuprate superconductors
Magneto-oscillations in kinetic and magnetic response functions of a few
underdoped cuprates are perhaps one of the most striking observations since
many probes of underdoped cuprates clearly point to a non Fermi-liquid normal
state. Their observation in the vortex state well below the upper critical
field raises a doubt concerning their normal state origin. Here I propose an
explanation of the magneto-oscillations as emerging from the quantum
interference of the vortex lattice and checkerboard modulations of the electron
density of states revealed by STM with atomic resolution in some cuprate
superconductors. The checkerboard effectively pins the vortex lattice, when the
period of the latter is commensurate with the period of the checkerboard. This
condition yields 1/\sqrt{B} periodicity of the response functions versus
magnetic field B, rather than 1/B periodicity of conventional normal state
oscillations. Our solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation for composed
charged bosons accounting for the d-wave symmetry of the order-parameter and
its checkerboard modulations describes well changes in resonant frequency of
the tunnel-diode oscillator circuit with YBa2Cu4O8 and the oscillatory part of
the Hall resistance and magnetic susceptibility in the mixed state of
YBa2Cu3O6.5.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, experimental conditions allowing for a resolution

Endophytic actinomycetes from spontaneous plants of Algerian Sahara: indole-3-acetic acid production and tomato plants growth promoting activity
Twenty-seven endophytic actinomycete strains were isolated from five spontaneous plants well adapted to
the poor sandy soil and arid climatic conditions of the Algerian Sahara. Morphological and chemotaxonomical analysis indicated that twenty-two isolates belonged to the Streptomyces genus and the remaining five were non- Streptomyces. All endophytic strains were screened for their ability to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in vitro on a chemically defined medium. Eighteen strains were
able to produce IAA and the maximum production occurred with the Streptomyces sp. PT2 strain. The IAA produced was further extracted, partially purified and confirmed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis. The 16S rDNA sequence analysis and phylogenetic studies indicated that strain PT2 was closely related to Streptomyces enissocaecilis NRRL B 16365T, Streptomyces rochei NBRC 12908T and Streptomyces plicatus NBRC 13071T, with 99.52 % similarity. The production of IAA was affected by cultural conditions such as temperature, pH, incubation period and L-tryptophan concentration. The highest level of IAA production (127 lg/ml) was obtained by cultivating the Streptomyces sp. PT2 strain in yeast
extract-tryptone broth supplemented with 5 mg L-tryptophan/ ml at pH 7 and incubated on a rotary shaker
(200 rpm) at 30°C for 5 days. Twenty-four-hour treatment of tomato cv. Marmande seeds with the supernatant culture of Streptomyces sp. PT2 that contained the crude IAA showed the maximum effect in promoting seed germination and root elongation

The Saharan isolate Saccharothrix algeriensis NRRL B-24137 induces systemic resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings against Botrytis cinerea
Background and aim Saccharothrix algeriensis NRRL B-24137, isolated from a Saharan soil, has been described as a potential biocontrol agent against Botrytis cinerea and other phytopathogens. However, the plant protection mechanisms involved still need to be described. The aim of this study was to determine this protection phenomenon as well as parts of the mechanisms involved, using Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings and B. cinerea. Methods The bacterial colonization process was evaluated on A. thaliana seedlings using fluorescence in situ hybridization. Protection of A. thaliana seedlings inoculated with NRRL B-24137 against B. cinerea was then evaluated. Parts of the mechanisms involved in the systemic protection against B. cinerea were evaluated using known mutants of genes involved in jasmonate (JA)/ethylene (ET)/salicylic acid (SA) signaling. Other Arabidopsis mutants, AtrhbohD-3, AtrhbohF-3, and ups1-1 were also screened to determine other parts of the mechanisms involved. Results The results showed that the strain NRRL B-24137 colonized, epi- and endophytically, the roots of Arabidopsis seedlings but the strain was not a systemic colonizer during the time of the experiment. The strain NRRL B-24137 also reduced B. cinerea symptoms and the protection was linked to known mechanisms of induced systemic resistance (ISR; JA/ET signaling), as well as to functionality of AtrbohF oxidase and of UPS1. Crosstalk between ET/JA and SA signaling could also be involved. Conclusions The isolate NRRL B-24137, after colonizing the root systems of A. thaliana, induces an ISR against B. cinerea, which is JA/ET dependent, but could also require SA crosstalk and protection could also require NAPDH oxidases and UPS1 functionalities
