Gravitational trapping potential with arbitrary extra dimensions
We extend a recently discovered, non-singular 6 dimensional brane, solution
to D=4+n dimensions. As with the previous 6D solution the present solution
provides a gravitational trapping mechanism for fields of spin 0, 1/2, 1 and 2.
There is an important distinction between 2 extra dimensions and extra
dimensions that makes this more than a trivial extension. In contrast to
gravity in n >2 dimensions, gravity in n=2 dimensions is conformally flat. The
stress-energy tensor required by this solution has reasonable physically
properties, and for n=2 and n=3 can be made to asymptotically go to zero as one
moves away from the brane.Comment: 7 pages revtex. No figures. References added some discussions change
Design that keeps designing: designing for participation
What role does participation take when engaging the public in communication design projects? What considerations and capacities in the communication design process and practice are required to enable participation? These questions are considered in this paper through critically reflecting on a project entitled Fashion City, which explored engaging the public as co-author of the communication content. The unexpected and confronting outcomes of the project provided valuable insights into designing for participation. The paper summarises three of the key lessons learned during the project that revolved around issues of releasing control and de-centralising the designer and the outcome of design. Following the understandings arising from the project, a 'scaffold' model is proposed. This scaffold can act as a framework that respects the individual's agency and their participation as well as their rights to choose to ignore or interact, engage or disengage in a 'conversation' initiated through design. These scaffolds may be risky and unconventional to normative commercial processes, however, it is argued that they can lead to generative situations of uncertainty and indeterminacy to occur, enabling the discovery of new concepts, knowledge and practices in communication design
Matter localization and resonant deconfinement in a two-sheeted spacetime
In recent papers, a model of a two-sheeted spacetime M4XZ2 was introduced and
the quantum dynamics of massive fermions was studied in this framework. In the
present study, we show that the physical predictions of the model are perfectly
consistent with observations and most important, it can solve the puzzling
problem of the four-dimensional localization of the fermion species in
multidimensional spacetimes. It is demonstrated that fermion localization on
the sheets arises from the combination of the discrete bulk structure and
environmental interactions. The mechanism described in this paper can be seen
as an alternative to the domain wall localization arising in continuous five
dimensional spacetimes. Although tightly constrained, motions between the
sheets are, however, not completely prohibited. As an illustration, a resonant
mechanism through which fermion oscillations between the sheets might occur is
described.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. Published version. Accepted for publication in

Creation of a brane world with Gauss-Bonnet term
We study a creation of a brane world using an instanton solution. We analyze
a brane model with a Gauss-Bonnet term in a bulk spacetime. The curvature of
3-brane is assumed to be closed, flat, or open. We construct instanton
solutions with branes for those models, and calculate the value of the actions
to discuss an initial state of a brane universe.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Non-topological gravitating defects in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space
A class of five-dimensional warped solutions is presented. The geometry is
everywhere regular and tends to five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space for large
absolute values of the bulk coordinate. The physical features of the solutions
change depending on the value of an integer parameter. In particular, a set of
solutions describes generalized gravitating kinks where the scalar field
interpolates between two different minima of the potential. The other category
of solutions describes instead gravitating defects where the scalar profile is
always finite and reaches the same constant asymptote both for positive and
negative values of the bulk coordinate. In this sense the profiles are
non-topological. The physical features of the zero modes are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Strong gravitational lensing by braneworld black holes
In this paper, we use the strong field limit approach to investigate the
gravitational lensing properties of braneworld black holes. Applying this
method to the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, the lensing
observables for some candidate braneworld black hole metrics are compared with
those for the standard Schwarzschild case. It is found that braneworld black
holes could have significantly different observational signatures to the
Schwarzschild black hole.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX4; v2 reference added; v3 minor technical

Mass gap for gravity localized on Weyl thick branes
We study the properties of a previously found family of thick brane
configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time, a
non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory involving a geometric
scalar field. Thus the 5D theory describes gravity coupled to a
self-interacting scalar field which gives rise to the structure of the thick
branes. Analyzing the graviton spectrum for this class of models, we find that
a particularly interesting situation arises for a special case in which the 4D
graviton is separated from the KK gravitons by a mass gap. The corresponding
effective Schroedinger equation has a modified Poeschl-Teller potential and can
be solved exactly. Apart from the massless 4D graviton, it contains one massive
KK bound state, and the continuum spectrum of delocalized KK modes. We discuss
the mass hierarchy problem, and explicitly compute the corrections to Newton's
law in the thin brane limit.Comment: 6 pages in Revtex, no figures, journal version, significately revised

Charged Rotating Black Holes on a 3-Brane
We study exact stationary and axisymmetric solutions describing charged
rotating black holes localized on a 3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld.
The charges of the black holes are considered to be of two types, the first
being an induced tidal charge that appears as an imprint of nonlocal
gravitational effects from the bulk space and the second is a usual electric
charge arising due to a Maxwell field trapped on the brane. We assume a special
ansatz for the metric on the brane taking it to be of the Kerr-Schild form and
show that the Kerr-Newman solution of ordinary general relativity in which the
electric charge is superceded by a tidal charge satisfies a closed system of
the effective gravitational field equations on the brane. It turns out that the
negative tidal charge may provide a mechanism for spinning up the black hole so
that its rotation parameter exceeds its mass. This is not allowed in the
framework of general relativity. We also find a new solution that represents a
rotating black hole on the brane carrying both charges. We show that for a
rapid enough rotation the combined influence of the rotational dynamics and the
local bulk effects of the "squared" energy momentum tensor on the brane distort
the horizon structure of the black hole in such a way that it can be thought of
as composed of non-uniformly rotating null circles with growing radii from the
equatorial plane to the poles. We finally study the geodesic motion of test
particles in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole with tidal charge.
We show that the effects of negative tidal charge tend to increase the horizon
radius, as well as the radii of the limiting photon orbit, the innermost bound
and the innermost stable circular orbits for both direct and retrograde motions
of the particles.Comment: RevTeX 4, 33 pages, 4 figures, new references adde
Naturalness Bounds on Dipole Moments from New Physics
Assuming naturalness that the quantum corrections to the mass should not
exceed the order of the observed mass, we derive and apply model-independent
bounds on the anomalous magnetic moments and electric dipole moments of leptons
and quarks due to new physics.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Graviton confinement inside hypermonopoles of any dimension
We show the generic existence of metastable massive gravitons in the
four-dimensional core of self-gravitating hypermonopoles in any number of
infinite-volume extra-dimensions. Confinement is observed for Higgs and gauge
bosons couplings of the order unity. Provided these resonances are light
enough, they realise the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati mechanism by inducing a
four-dimensional gravity law on some intermediate length scales. The effective
four-dimensional Planck mass is shown to be proportional to a negative power of
the graviton mass. As a result, requiring gravity to be four-dimensional on
cosmological length scales may solve the mass hierarchy problem.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, uses iopart. Misprints corrected, references
