The investigations focused on the behaviour of the herbicides bromoxynil, ioxynil and mecoprop during artificial groundwater recharge and bankfiltration. To allow further risk assessment the adsorption and biodegradation was investigated in batch cultures and modell ecosystemes. The experiments simulated worst-case situations during slow sand filtration, aerobic and anaerobic underground passage and in the unsaturated and saturated soil. In general, the herbicides could be degraded partially during slow sand filtration and underground passage, but only under special environmental conditions. The degradation processes showed, that hydroxybenzonitriles and mecoprop can pass the slow sand filters especially in regard to continuous input situations. Under groundwater conditions the herbicides are persistent for one or more than four weeks. The adaptation times and degradation rates of bromoxynil, ioxynil and mecoprop indicated a potential for endangerment during groundwater recharge and bank filtration. This potential is caused by the low adsorption of these substance and their ability to inhibit microbial activities as well as by their biological stability under groundwater conditions for 10 to more than 28 days. Exceeding of drinking water standards for pesticides cause numerous problems due to practical procedures. The state of the art is given about knowledge of German waterworks concerning the contamination of raw- and drinking water by pesticides and remediation actions as well as procedures required by federal law and county regulations. It could be shown that the number of waterworks exeeding given limits was low. Therefor minor experiences could be obtained for remedial measures. In contrary the cooperation between pesticide users, authorities, producers, and waterworks objecting a general reduction of pesticide contamination is more comprehensive. Conformity and difference between legal requirement and volontary cooperation, deficiences and problems are explained. Prospective necessities are described. The pesticide input into two small tributaries of the river Ruhr was investigated. Both investigation sites are situated in the water protection area of Dortmunder Energie- und Wasserversorgung GmbH. A relevant part of pesticides in the surface water was due to non-agricultural application. The relative importance of these inputs was higher in the more settlement dominated catchment. Diuron could be found as a consequence of weed control both in railway tracks and in private and industrial grounds. Although major loads were detected after stormwater events, almost 30% of all Diuron inputs could be analyzed on days with precipitation below 2 mm/d and were bound to base flow. Following weed control in railway tracks Glyphosate occurred in surface water. In spite of the german application ban resp. missing approval Atrazine and Simazine could be found often but in minor concentration levels during research period between 1994 and 1996. However single findings with maximum concentration up to 2 #mu#g/l showed actual but forbidden, non-agricultural application of these pesticides. Crop herbicides Isoproturon and Chlortoluron as well as maize herbicide Terbuthylazine dominated agricultural pesticides results according to the main farming cultures in the catchment areas. Particularly Isoproturon and Chlortoluron occurrence was due to an input with base flow after an underground passage. A review is given on potential entrance pathes of pesticides into the aquatic environment, on pesticide application and pesticide occurrence in raw and drinking waters, and on existing legislative frame conditions at surpasssings of drinking water standards for pesticides. Based on this review, strategies are discussed for sanitation and minimization at pesticide loads of the stretches of water used for drinking water production. An important strategy consists in the preventive cooperation between water-supplier and pesticide users. Such a strategy is often hampered by several defects, e.g. by the lack of sufficient data on soil science, hydrogeology and pesticide application.
