    On the smoothness of static multi-black hole solutions of higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory

    Previous work has shown that static multi-black hole solutions of higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory do not possess smooth horizons. We show that the lack of smoothness is worse than previously demonstrated. We consider solutions describing multiple black holes on a common axis. In five dimensions, the metric is generically twice, but not three times, continuously differentiable at the horizon. The Maxwell field is generically continuous, but not differentiable, at the horizon. In more than five dimensions, the metric is once, but not twice, continuously differentiable, and there is a parallely-propagated curvature singularity at the horizon. The Maxwell field strength is again continuous, but not differentiable, at the horizon.Comment: 19 pages; minor correction

    D0-brane tension in string field theory

    We compute the D0-brane tension in string field theory by representing it as a tachyon lump of the D1-brane compactified on a circle of radius RR. To this aim, we calculate the lump solution in level truncation up to level L=8. The normalized D0-brane tension is independent on RR. The compactification radius is therefore chosen in order to cancel the subleading correction 1/L21/L^2. We show that an optimal radius R∗R^* indeed exists and that at R∗R^* the theoretical prediction for the tension is reproduced at the level of 10−510^{-5}. As a byproduct of our calculation we also discuss the determination of the marginal tachyon field at R→1R\to 1.Comment: 13 pages, 3 Eps figure

    Comparison of dermal and inhalation routes of entry for organic chemicals

    The quantitative comparison of the chemical concentration inside the body as the result of a dermal exposure versus an inhalation exposure is useful for assessing human health risks and deciding on an appropriate protective posture. In order to describe the relationship between dermal and inhalation routes of exposure, a variety of organic chemicals were evaluated. The types of chemicals chosen for the study were halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds, non-polar hydrocarbons and inhalation anesthetics. Both dermal and inhalation exposures were conducted in rats and the chemicals were in the form of vapors. Prior to the dermal exposure, rat fur was closely clipped and during the exposure rats were provided fresh breathing air through latex masks. Blood samples were taken during 4-hour exposures and analyzed for the chemical of interest. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model was used to predict permeability constants (cm/hr) consistent with the observed blood concentrations of the chemical. The ratio of dermal exposure to inhalation exposure required to achieve the same internal dose of chemical was calculated for each test chemical. The calculated ratio in humans ranged from 18 for styrene to 1180 for isoflurane. This methodology can be used to estimate the dermal exposure required to reach the internal dose achieved by a specific inhalation exposure. Such extrapolation is important since allowable exposure standards are often set for inhalation exposures, but occupational exposures may be dermal

    Potential nutritional contributions of bacterial exopolymer and suspended bacteria to the detritus feeding estuarine clam, Macoma balthica, were examined separately in laboratory 14C labelling experiments. Significant removal and assimilation of suspended bacteria by M. balthica was observed within two days, although the low clearance rates suggested planktonic bacteria may not be among its major food sources. Sediment-bound and dissolved bacterial exopolymer did not appear to be directly metabolized by M. balthica, as evidenced by the 1–2 week lag in 14C uptake into clam tissue

    A geometric constraint over k-dimensional objects and shapes subject to business rules

    This report presents a global constraint that enforces rules written in a language based on arithmetic and first-order logic to hold among a set of objects. In a first step, the rules are rewritten to Quantifier-Free Presburger Arithmetic (QFPA) formulas. Secondly, such formulas are compiled to generators of k-dimensional forbidden sets. Such generators are a generalization of the indexicals of cc(FD). Finally, the forbidden sets generated by such indexicals are aggregated by a sweep-based algorithm and used for filtering. The business rules allow to express a great variety of packing and placement constraints, while admitting efficient and effective filtering of the domain variables of the k-dimensional object, without the need to use spatial data structures. The constraint was used to directly encode the packing knowledge of a major car manufacturer and tested on a set of real packing problems under these rules, as well as on a packing-unpacking problem

    Star formation in the inner galaxy: A far-infrared and radio study of two H2 regions

    Far-infrared and radio continuum maps have been made of the central 6' of the inner-galaxy HII regions G30.8-0.0 (in the W43 complex) and G25.4-0.2, along with radio and molecular line measurements at selected positions. The purpose of this study is an effort to understand star formation in the molecular ring at 5 kpc in galactic radius. Measurements at several far infrared wavelengths allow the dust temperature structures and total far infrared fluxes to be determined. Comparison of the radio and infrared maps shows a close relationship between the ionized gas and the infrared-emitting material. There is evidence that parts of G30.8 are substantially affected by extinction, even at far-infrared wavelengths. Using radio recombination line and CO line data for G25.4-0.2, the distance ambiguity for this source is resolved. The large distance previously ascribed to the entire complex is found to apply to only one of the two main components. The confusion in distance determination is found to result from an extraordinary near-superposition of two bright HII regions. Using the revised distances of 4.3 kpc for G25.4SE and 12 kpc for G25.4NW, it is found that the latter, which is apparently the fainter of the two sources, is actually the more luminous. The ratio of total luminosity to ionizing luminosity is very similar to that of HII regions in the solar circle. Assuming a coeval population of ionizing stars, a normal initial mass function is indicated
