Two-mode squeezed vacuum and squeezed light in correlated interferometry
We study in detail a system of two interferometers aimed to the detection of
extremely faint phase-fluctuations. This system can represent a breakthrough
for detecting a faint correlated signal that would remain otherwise
undetectable even using the most sensitive individual interferometric devices,
that are limited by the shot noise. If the two interferometers experience
identical phase-fluctuations, like the ones introduced by the so called
"holographic noise", this signal should emerge if their output signals are
correlated, while the fluctuations due to shot noise and other independent
contributions will vanish. We show how the injecting quantum light in the free
ports of the interferometers can reduce the photon noise of the system beyond
the shot-noise, enhancing the resolution in the phase-correlation estimation.
We analyze both the use of two-mode squeezed vacuum or twin-beam state (TWB)
and of two independent squeezing states. Our results basically confirms the
benefit of using squeezed beams together with strong coherent beams in
interferometry, even in this correlated case. However, mainly we concentrate on
the possible use of TWB, discovering interesting and probably unexplored areas
of application of bipartite entanglement and in particular the possibility of
reaching in principle surprising uncertainty reduction
Stability of U-500 regular insulin in prefilled syringes
Objective: To evaluate the stability of U-500 regular insulin in prefilled syringes stored under refrigeration for up to 28 days.
Methods: U-500 regular insulin was drawn up in 1 mL insulin syringes in a clean, nonsterile environment to emulate conditions of a patient’s home. Samples were assayed using a stability-indicating reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method immediately after preparation (day 0) and after 7, 14, 21, and 28 days under refrigeration. Before evaluation, all samples were diluted to a concentration of 40 units/mL in the starting mobile phase. Stability was determined by evaluating the percentage of the initial concentration remaining at each time point.
Results: At least 93.3% of the initial U-500 insulin concentration remained throughout the 28-day study period, with no statistically significant changes in the amount remaining. The percent of initial concentration remained above 97% for the first 21 days of the study.
Conclusion: A prefilled syringe with U-500 regular insulin is stable for at least 28 days when stored under refrigeration. These data are similar to those reported for U-100 regular insulin, indicating that prefilling syringes with U-500 insulin is a safe and effective practice for patients who are unable to accurately draw up their own point-of-care doses
Self-directed learning through journal use in an elective pharmacy course
Introduction: The objective of this study was to implement and assess the use of electronic self-directed learning journals in a one-semester pharmacy elective course as a development tool to promote self-learning amongst students.
Description of Course: In a toxicology doctor of pharmacy elective course, students completed self-directed assignments based on in-class material in an electronic journal. Students participated in group discussions based on the assignment. Journals were graded for completeness and pursuit of individual interests was encouraged.
Evaluation: Students responded positively to journal assignments and their educational value. Faculty members also recognised a high level of learning by students based on their group discussions. Performance on course learning objectives and quality of in-class discussions also indicated that the use of journals in the elective course was successful.
Future Plans: Based on these findings, journals will continue to be used in this course, will be further assessed, and may be expanded to additional courses in the pharmacy curriculum

Once-Weekly Exenatide as Adjunct Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Patients Receiving Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion Therapy
Objective The use of once-weekly exenatide in type 2 diabetes mellitus is well supported, but little is known about its effectiveness in type 1 diabetes. The objective of this study was to determine the clinical efficacy of once-weekly exenatide on glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes when added to basal-bolus insulin therapy. Methods For this retrospective study, patients with type 1 diabetes, aged 18 years and older, receiving continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, using a continuous glucose monitoring device or regularly measuring blood glucose levels and receiving 2 mg of exenatide once weekly for at least 3 months were included. Demographic information, glycated hemoglobin (A1C), body weight, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, total daily insulin dose, basal and bolus insulin doses, 28-day continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion glucose average and incidence of hypoglycemia were collected at baseline and 3 months after beginning therapy with once-weekly exenatide. Results An electronic medical record search identified 11 patients with type 1 diabetes who met the inclusion criteria. Comparing baseline and 3 months after initiation of once-weekly exenatide revealed reductions of 0.6% in A1C (p=0.013), 3.7% in body weight (p=0.008), 1.7 kg/m2 in body mass index (p=0.003), 13% in total daily insulin dose (p=0.011) and 9.3 units in bolus insulin dose (p=0.015). Conclusions This study revealed that the addition of once-weekly exenatide to insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes patients leads to significant improvements in A1C, body weight, body mass index and insulin doses
Single-photon-emitting optical centers in diamond fabricated upon Sn implantation
The fabrication of luminescent defects in single-crystal diamond upon Sn
implantation and annealing is reported. The relevant spectral features of the
optical centers (emission peaks at 593.5 nm, 620.3 nm, 630.7 nm and 646.7 nm)
are attributed to Sn-related defects through the correlation of their
photoluminescence (PL) intensity with the implantation fluence. Single
Sn-related defects were identified and characterized through the acquisition of
their second-order auto-correlation emission functions, by means of
Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometry. The investigation of their single-photon
emission regime as a function of excitation laser power revealed that
Sn-related defects are based on three-level systems with a 6 ns radiative decay
lifetime. In a fraction of the studied centers, the observation of a blinking
PL emission is indicative of the existence of a dark state. Furthermore,
absorption dependence from the polarization of the excitation radiation with
about 45 percent contrast was measured. This work shed light on the existence
of a new optical center associated with a group-IV impurity in diamond, with
similar photo-physical properties to the already well-known Si-V and Ge-V
emitters, thus providing results of interest from both the fundamental and

pastamarkers: astrophysical data visualization with pasta-like markers
We aim at facilitating the visualization of astrophysical data for several
tasks, such as uncovering patterns, presenting results to the community, and
facilitating the understanding of complex physical relationships to the public.
We present pastamarkers, a customized Python package fully compatible with
matplotlib, that contains unique pasta-shaped markers meant to enhance the
visualization of astrophysical data. We prove that using different pasta types
as markers can improve the clarity of astrophysical plots by reproducing some
of the most famous plots in the literature.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Lower All-Cause Mortality Risk in Females and Males with Peripheral Artery Disease following Pain-Free Home-Based Exercise: A 7-Year Observational Study
We evaluated the sex-specific difference in response upon participation in an exercise program with respect to the risk of adverse clinical outcomes among patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and claudication. The records of 400 PAD patients were assessed between 2012 and 2015. Two hundred of them were addressed to a walking program prescribed at the hospital and executed at home at symptom-free walking speed (Ex), while the remaining 200 acted as a control group (Co). The number and date of deaths, all-cause hospitalizations, and amputations for a 7-year period were collected from the regional registry. At baseline, no differences were observed (MEX n = 138; FEX n = 62; MCO n = 149; FCO n = 51). The 7-year survival rate was significantly higher in FEX (90%) than in MEX (82% hazard ratio, HR: 0.542 95% CI 0.331–0.885), FCO (45%, HR: 0.164 95% CI 0.088–0.305), and MCO (44%; HR: 0.157 95% CI 0.096–0.256). A significantly lower rate of hospitalization (p < 0.001) and amputations (p = 0.016) was observed for the Ex group compared to the Co group, without differences by sex. In conclusion, in PAD patients, active participation in a home-based pain-free exercise program was associated with a lower rate of death and better long-term clinical outcomes, particularly among women
