    Temporal and effort cost decision-making in healthy individuals with subclinical psychotic symptoms

    The value people attribute to rewards is influenced both by the time and the effort required to obtain them. Impairments in these computations are described in patients with schizophrenia and appear associated with negative symptom severity. This study investigated whether deficits in temporal and effort cost computations can be observed in individuals with subclinical psychotic symptoms (PS) to determine if this dysfunction is already present in a potentially pre-psychotic period. Sixty participants, divided into three groups based on the severity of PS (high, medium and low), performed two temporal discounting tasks with food and money and a concurrent schedule task, in which the effort to obtain food increased over time. We observed that in high PS participants the discounting rate appeared linear and flatter than that exhibited by participants with medium and low PS, especially with food. In the concurrent task, compared to those with low PS, participants with high PS exerted tendentially less effort to obtain snacks only when the required effort was high. Participants exerting less effort in the higher effort condition were those with higher negative symptoms. These results suggest that aberrant temporal and effort cost computations might be present in individuals with subclinical PS and therefore could represent a vulnerability marker for psychosis

    Verbal aptitude hurts children's economic decisionā€making accuracy

    The impact of childrenā€™s decision making increases with age and has relatively increased through time. Although a lot is known about cognitive development, less is known about how this development impacts decision accuracy in economic situations. This study builds on revealed preference theory to study the impact of cognitive aptitude on economic decision making accuracy and explores the intervening role of decision heuristics. In a study (n=100) where children from three age groups had to make choices between combinations of products, we found that decision accuracy was lower for kindergarteners than for children from the third and sixth grade, replicating and validating older findings. We found that one aspect of cognitive aptitude, namely verbal aptitude, hurts rather than helps decision accuracy. Further explorations suggested that this relation was due to the decreased use of the ā€œmore is betterā€ heuristic, a childā€™s preference for options with many units, which decreased with increasing verbal aptitude but increased rational decision making.     Age modulates the effect of COMT genotype on delay discounting behavior

    RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: A form of impulsivity, the tendency to choose immediate over delayed rewards (delay-discounting) has been associated with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene (COMTval(158)met; rs4680). However, existing data regarding the nature of this association conflicts. We have previously reported that adults homozygous for valine (val) at the COMTval(158)met SNP demonstrate greater delay-discounting than do methionine (met) allele carriers (Boettiger et al. 2007). In contrast, a recent study of adolescent males found that those with the met/met genotype demonstrate greater delay-discounting than do val-allele carriers (Paloyelis et al. 2010). Based on reported age-related changes in frontal dopamine function and COMT expression, we hypothesized that the association of COMT genotype with delay-discounting behavior is modulated by age from late adolescence to young adulthood. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we genotyped late adolescents (18ā€“21 years; n=72) and adults (22ā€“40 years; n=70) for the COMTval(158)met polymorphism, measured their delay-discounting behavior, and tested for an interaction between age group and COMT genotype. RESULTS: This cross-sectional study found that age modulates COMTval(158)met genotype effects on delay-discounting behavior. Among met-carriers, delay-discounting was negatively correlated with age from late adolescence to adulthood, while among val/val individuals delay-discounting was positively correlated with age across this range. CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm our previous finding of enhanced delay-discounting among val/val adults relative to met-allele carriers, and help reconcile existing literature.
