Relaxation processes in harmonic glasses?
A relaxation process, with the associated phenomenology of sound attenuation
and sound velocity dispersion, is found in a simulated harmonic Lennard-Jones
glass. We propose to identify this process with the so called microscopic (or
instantaneous) relaxation process observed in real glasses and supercooled
liquids. A model based on the memory function approach accounts for the
observation, and allows to relate to each others: 1) the characteristic time
and strength of this process, 2) the low frequency limit of the dynamic
structure factor of the glass, and 3) the high frequency sound attenuation
coefficient, with its observed quadratic dependence on the momentum transfer.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Elastic constant dishomogeneity and dependence of the broadening of the dynamical structure factor in disordered systems
We propose an explanation for the quadratic dependence on the momentum ,
of the broadening of the acoustic excitation peak recently found in the study
of the dynamic structure factor of many real and simulated glasses. We ascribe
the observed law to the spatial fluctuations of the local wavelength of
the collective vibrational modes, in turn produced by the dishomegeneity of the
inter-particle elastic constants. This explanation is analitically shown to
hold for 1-dimensional disordered chains and satisfatorily numerically tested

Observation of Umklapp processes in non-crystalline materials
Umklapp processes are known to exist in cristalline materials, where they
control important properties such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity and
electrical conductivity. In this work we report the provocative observation of
Umklapp processes in a non-periodical system, namely liquid Lithium. The lack
of a well defined periodicity seems then not to prevent the existence of these
scattering processes mechanisms provided that the local order of the systems
i.e. the maxima of the static structure factor supply the equivalent of a
reciprocal lattice vector in the case of cristalline materials.Comment: 13 pages P
Microscopic dynamics and relaxation processes in liquid Hydrogen Fluoride
Inelastic x-ray scattering and Brillouin light scattering measurements of the
dynamic structure factor of liquid hydrogen fluoride have been performed in the
temperature range. The data, analysed using a viscoelastic
model with a two timescale memory function, show a positive dispersion of the
sound velocity between the low frequency value and the high
frequency value . This finding confirms the existence of
a structural () relaxation directly related to the dynamical
organization of the hydrogen bonds network of the system. The activation energy
of the process has been extracted by the analysis of the temperature
behavior of the relaxation time that follows an Arrhenius law.
The obtained value for , when compared with that observed in another
hydrogen bond liquid as water, suggests that the main parameter governing the
-relaxation process is the number of the hydrogen bonds per molecule.Comment: 9 pages and 12 figure
Crystal-like high frequency phonons in the amorphous phases of solid water
The high frequency dynamics of low- (LDA) and high-density amorphous-ice
(HDA) and of cubic ice (I_c) has been measured by inelastic X-ray Scattering
(IXS) in the 1-15 nm^{-1} momentum transfer (Q) range. Sharp phonon-like
excitations are observed, and the longitudinal acoustic branch is identified up
to Q = 8nm^{-1} in LDA and I_c and up to 5nm^{-1} in HDA. The narrow width of
these excitations is in sharp contrast with the broad features observed in all
amorphous systems studied so far. The "crystal-like" behavior of amorphous
ices, therefore, implies a considerable reduction in the number of decay
channels available to sound-like excitations which is assimilated to low local

Phlebotomus sergenti in a Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Focus in Azilal Province (High Atlas, Morocco): Molecular Detection and Genotyping of Leishmania tropica, and Feeding Behavior
International audienceBackground Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) sergenti is at least one of the confirmed vectors for the transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania tropica and distributed widely in Morocco. This form of leishmaniasis is considered largely as anthroponotic, although dogs were found infected with Leishmania tropica, suggestive of zoonosis in some rural areas. Methodology and Findings This survey aimed at (i) studying the presence of Leishmania in field caught Phlebotomus sergenti, (ii) investigating genetic diversity within Leishmania tropica and (iii) identifying the host-blood feeding preferences of Phlebotomus sergenti. A total of 4,407 sand flies were collected in three rural areas of Azilal province, using CDC miniature light traps. Samples collected were found to consist of 13 species: Phlebotomus spp. and 3 Sergentomyia spp. The most abundant species was Phlebotomus sergenti, accounting for 45.75% of the total. 965 female Phlebotomus sergenti were screened for the presence of Leishmania by ITS1-PCR-RFLP, giving a positive rate of 5.7%(55/965), all being identified as Leishmania tropica. Nucleotide heterogeneity of PCR-amplified ITS1-5.8S rRNA gene-ITS2 was noted. Analyses of 31 sequences obtained segregated them into 16 haplotypes, of which 7 contain superimposed peaks at certain nucleotide positions, suggestive of heterozygosity. Phlebotomus sergenti collected were found to feed on a large variety of vertebrate hosts, as determined by Cytochrome b sequencing of the DNA from the blood meals of 64 engorged females. Conclusion Our findings supported the notion that Phlebotomus sergenti is the primary vector of Leishmania tropica in this focus, and that the latter is genetically very heterogeneous. Furthermore, our results might be suggestive of a certain level of heterozygosity in Leishmania tropica population. This finding, as well as the feeding of the vectors on different animals are of interest for further investigation
